  • I think those speed guns are a load of crap. Somehow the white ball goes faster - I bowled 83-84mph in the Test match, and 93mph in the one-dayers. It's crazy. I hadn't bowled a ball for ten days.

England v Ireland, Super Eights, Providence

The odds of Ireland reaching the Super Eights before the World Cup got underway must have been fairly long. Yet here they are - the tournament’s most slippery of banana skins - about to face the mighty England.

Is it providence that they are playing in Providence? Do you know the result ahead of time, Will?

  • Tobi wrote:

I suppose the Irish cannot win (talking about providence…) but I hope they will put on a good fight.
Come on you boys on green!

  • Tobi wrote:

Meant to be “in green” of course… Wherever that came from…

I like how Will says ‘mighty England’ with a straight face when faced with the cricketing colossus that is Ireland.

    Have you no shame, sir?

Anyone got an audio/video link to the match commentary right now? thanks

  • Caroline wrote:

Ye Gods we’re off! I mistook the time difference. Joyce out early, and I hear match-fixing rumours starting already . . .

griff, the old bbc radio link still works
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/player/sol/newsid_6160000/newsid_6162500/6162564.stm?bw=nb&mp=wm
Than press “Realted - Live Audio Commentary only”. It should connect. If it does not start, try the “Stand alone player” link on the same page.
No video links I would know off.
Oh, and here goes Michael Vaughan…

  • Wraye wrote:

yep, Vaughen develops a fruit allergy and Joyce is scared to play his old mates.

  • Caroline wrote:

OK, I give up Wraye - “fruit allergy”???

  • Wraye wrote:
    March 30th, 2007 at 3.49 pm

well, if as Will said, the Irish are a banana skin, perhaps Vaugheny can’t stand the fruit?

Sorry, I’d been talking with someone else and got the two threads mixed up in my tired old brain here. It’s 4.48pm and in 12 minutes I’m officially on holiday. Yahhh!

  • Caroline wrote:

    Oh . . . Definitely time for a holiday . . .

Anyone else getting sick of Pieterson taking singles?

  • Emma wrote:

Not as sick as I was getting of Bell hitting beautifully to the fielder. But still, really wanted him to go on for a century. Warwickshire fans shake their heads all over the county.

Thanks, but the link doesn’t work for those of us in Tokyo (rights issues?)

Even Penguin radio’s stream is blocked :-(

    Am I missing much?

Have you tried it? In Germany there are also apparently right issues (thats what it says on the homepage) but it does work (so sometimes not on the first try, I have to admit). Otherwise you can try pasting this link directly into a media player

Not really- England are on top but not dominating..170 for 4 in the 40th.

43 runs at a Strike Rate of 69 is not a good innings. It’s an ok innings. Commentators continue the rhetoric…

Tobi, you must have a Kolpak computer. I doesn’t work for me in Bonn either.

And there goes Freddy. What a turgid innings from England :(

The funny thing is that it works on different PCs. And I have not paid the BBC (or anybody else) for it…

  • Wraye wrote:

Well, the innings ended far better than I would have anticipated. This morning I bet myself on an England score of 270 for 7 - honest injun, I did. Mind you, I adjusted that to 170 this afternoon. Fine knock by Colly, pity about the run out with just three balls to go, but credit where due, the Irish had done some fine fielding.

Tobi, I still have LW on my radio but I’ll keep trying with Aunty Beeb.

Is this the most boring game in Christendom? God, England are lacklustre. It is painful to watch. What is wrong with them?

  • Wraye wrote:

What is wrong with England? Perhaps the alignment of Jupiter with Saturn? Maybe Scorpio in now in the house of Ares? WTF? Perhaps the food? Perhaps that they are supporting the Associates so much that they lower their levels to those of the amateurs. Bless. How kind.

I’m sure it’s fun for the players. Hoping Niall goes on to record a good century here. Might be interesting if he starts middling a few boundaries.

    Gotta love Monty

    Go Monty!

  • Jess wrote:

Vaughan’s in on the action too, very nice to see.

  • Kathy wrote:
    March 30th, 2007 at 9.16 pm

Woohoo. Vaughany got a wicket. He’s bowling better than Monty. Now if only he could get some runs, he could be an allrounder.

  • Michael wrote:
    March 30th, 2007 at 9.20 pm

That was beautifully looped wasn’t it? They’ve been saying all along Monty is bowling too flat and too fast. That one spent half-a-drinks-break in the air before coming down. And it completely deceived a set batsman.

  • Michael wrote:

    JOKE OF THE DAY.
KP has just been announced as World #1 ODI batsman?! How the fuck?!

  • Michael wrote:
    March 30th, 2007 at 9.38 pm

Pietersen has 8 half centuries to his name since 1st January, 2006. No hundreds. Averaging 47. Those are good stats. But?!

Ponting has 5 hundreds and 10 half centuries since 1st January, 2006.

Upon his fightback mid-last year Hayden has bullied 4 hundreds and 4 half centuries at an average of 62.

We all know Hayden is currently the leading ODI batman in the world.

  • Jess wrote:

Consistency (almost always gets over 40 if he gets in). Plus Hussey’s going through a rocky patch.

  • Michael wrote:
    March 30th, 2007 at 9.49 pm

He’s also the leading batSman. What he does in his spare time is his business. :D

  • Jess wrote:
    March 30th, 2007 at 9.51 pm

Actually KP would agree with you, I think.

PS. This was like, Monday’s joke of the day. I know you live in Amurrica, but really…

  • Michael wrote:
    March 30th, 2007 at 9.54 pm

Hussey shouldn’t be in the Top 5, or Top 10 at this point. But Ponting and Hayden have easily been more consistent and more dominant than Skunk Head Jolly Ol Chap.

    Consecutive boundaries off Collingwood. Interesting.

  • Michael wrote:
    March 30th, 2007 at 9.58 pm

Monday’s joke of the day? What are you talking about Jess?

  • Jess wrote:
    March 30th, 2007 at 10.06 pm

I read a BBC article about this on Monday - you’re behind the times old chap :)

Either that, or I’m living in some weird time-warp-loop thingumabob.

    It’s all over. Thankfully.

  • Michael wrote:

That was my joke of the day.

As for KP, he probably was awarded earlier in the week. I don’t make a habit of keeping up with the BBC. It came to my attention because the commentary team were talking about it.

    There’s some massive oversights here.

I see mighty England has had a stunning win over the Irish. Once again I see their their world domination plans are on track.

What is it about English commentators and cricket rankings. They almost never get a mention, but when a Brit reaches the top they are suddenly definitive.

I’m pretty sure Ian Botham and the Sky crew are still going on about Steve Harmison having been the world number 1 test bowler as if he had had a federer-like reign at the top of the rankings!

  • Will wrote:

Truly pathetic. They were as limp as lettuce. Rant in full elsewhere.

  • Kathy wrote:
    March 31st, 2007 at 2.05 am

It WAS pathetic. At least Fred earned his money today, after my ranting about him. But generally the bowling was dire. Is that why Vaughan brought himself on? Couldn’t find anyone else…. didn’t do too badly either. Why aren’t they using Plunkett for God’s sake?

The only consoling thought I have is that perhaps England raise themselves to the level of the opposition! ;-)

Yawn. Went to sleep when Ireland were 2 down. Glad to see I did not miss much. Good on the Irish for giving it their best. Blaah to England for boring us all to death.
