I am really looking forward to this one. This is one of the matches I cant miss even though indian team made a fool out of all indians.
Australia v South Africa, World Cup, St Kitts
By Will last year, at the end of March Leave a comment on this post
A big game, this. Both are through to the Super Eights, but the winner takes forward two crucial points. And this is what Ponting reckons
“For us, this is as big a game as a semi-final or a final. The No.1 and No. 2-ranked teams going head-to-head in the World Cup. It doesn’t get much bigger. We’re very excited and we’ve been training very positively this week. Having the five or six days off between games has been a good thing for us. It’s allowed us to freshen up and work on our skills, and there’ll be no excuses on Sunday.”
Check the scorecard, leave a comment and generally make a nuisance of yourselves.

“Australia off to a flyer” says Cricinfo, after South Africa won the toss and decided to bat.
Is this good? Last time Australia posted the highest ODI score, the Saffers beat them. Don’t think I can bear to watch Gilly. I never feel safe and secure til Ponting gets in. Why didn’t the silly b_s want to bat first? I know why, really… just hope it comes back to haunt them.
…going to bed.
March 24th, 2007 at 2.23 pm
Gilly’s on fire! Matthew Hayden’s doing alright as well, but I don’t like him as much ![]()
March 24th, 2007 at 2.33 pm
You got it backwards Jess
Haydo’s on fire! What a six over long off!
March 24th, 2007 at 2.33 pm
I haven’t gone to bed after all, as I discovered the game is being broadcast on the local radio here while I work on my uni project.
So Gilly and Haydos are off to 0-96 after 14 overs 7 runs an over! I wonder what they are aiming for? 500? I never liked Hayden either, Jess, til I saw him demonstrating how to cook his grannie’s favourite dinner! He’s really a sensitve new age guy, not he bully people like to make him out to be.
March 24th, 2007 at 2.38 pm
Good on ya Fiona! ![]()
March 24th, 2007 at 2.39 pm
It’s not the allegedly bullying attitude I have a problem with! He just never comes across as a nice person. I recognise he’s a very good batter though
Gilly’s gone for 42
I like him much more
March 24th, 2007 at 2.42 pm
South African Commentator is a complete dickhead. Says Hayden’s innings has been a bit scratchy, played and missed a few, could have been out a few times. Whatever mate. Go cover the England game or something.
March 24th, 2007 at 2.44 pm
Ah it’s Warnie’s Bunny. No bloody wonder. Cullinan probably still breaks out in cold sweats and wake’s up at night thinking about Shane Warne.
March 24th, 2007 at 2.44 pm
Finally Gilchrist retires. I was getting worried. ![]()
March 24th, 2007 at 2.45 pm
It sounds like Darryl Cullinan (if you’re listening to the same commentary as me) - not the most noted fan of Australia!
March 24th, 2007 at 2.47 pm
Of the Australian cricket team, I mean. I’m sure he has nothing against continental landmasses
March 24th, 2007 at 3.01 pm
Ponting goes to 10,000 runs with a majestic six over long on. And Hayden is closing in on the fastest World Cup Century…
March 24th, 2007 at 3.11 pm
I think the Aussies are trying to make a statement…….to Graeme Smith, anyway. TMS is describing Hayden’s batting as like Batman - biff, wham, whacko! If anyone has visuals, could you tell me if he’s still using his pink bat?
March 24th, 2007 at 3.55 pm
No pink bat. It was just brutal cricket; what was best is there was no wild swings and risky shots. It was all good cricket strokes from a batsman in amazing form.
Clark is worrying me, again. 5 balls in a row he found short midwicket. He did finally hit a 4 and 6 in successive balls to slightly redeem himself.
And Jess, yeah it was Cullinan.
March 24th, 2007 at 4.13 pm
I always worry about Clarke. Like Watson. They always look like they are trying too hard to show they can stay in. Oh, ” SMASHED away for four…” said the commentary. Maybe I take that back about Clarke.
Now it’s 2-250 in the 36 over.
(How’s England going over there, by the way?)
March 24th, 2007 at 5.26 pm
Just switched over to the game at the conclusion of 6-377 (50) by the lads. Clark turned it around and Symonds had a decent hit in his return. Some nice innovation there by Watson at the end. Anyway, Kenya were something like 35-2 earlier in a 43 over match and I just checked, 4-99. They have potential to banana skin the pommies here.
March 24th, 2007 at 6.38 pm
The inability of Australia to defend any total, no matter how high, really gives me the sh its. We could have got 500 and you just know the Yarpies would get them.
March 24th, 2007 at 7.21 pm
At least Vaughn got out for 1. I’m a bit happier.
March 24th, 2007 at 7.27 pm
Kenya could never banana skin us, Michael (I hope…). Vaughan’s gone cheaply yet again, though. He wouldn’t be in the side if he wasn’t captain.
March 24th, 2007 at 8.07 pm
Never say never. Two teams said never and they’re currently shopping on expedia.com for airfare.
March 24th, 2007 at 8.18 pm
Where’s the fucking Hogg critics now?
March 24th, 2007 at 8.26 pm
Hopefully that ball will get on to YouTube anyway despite the restrictions. I want to have a look. Gibbs gone must help the cause.
I want to see the required run rate get to ten though.
March 24th, 2007 at 8.42 pm
My American wife Jenifer just said, “I like Symonds because he seems to make things happen.”
This was in response to another one of his great fielding efforts. I gave that some thought and that describes him perfectly!
My wife, and boys, were lucky to watch their first ever real game in person last year at the SCG, 2nd final between SL and AUS. That day Symonds scored 156 (odd) from the precarious position of 3-10.
March 24th, 2007 at 8.44 pm
Well, the required RR reached 10 and Boucher responds with a 4 and 6 off McGrath!
Um, some more wickets required. ![]()
March 24th, 2007 at 8.47 pm
It was an absolute jaffa and the best possible response to a clean hit for 6 the ball before.
March 24th, 2007 at 8.55 pm
Boucher gone. Courtesy a Tait yorker.
SA need nearly 2 a ball now.
March 24th, 2007 at 9.00 pm
Also watch Tait’s beauties:
Bowling Boucher
LBW Kemp
Raw, raw, raw speed.
March 24th, 2007 at 9.05 pm
Smith gone, see yah. Bloody chokers.
I like Kallis a lot, but it looks like he is batting for his average to me…
March 24th, 2007 at 9.05 pm
The much touted Tait yorker is actually proving useful - cool!
Maybe they won’t miss Lee as much as feared.
March 24th, 2007 at 9.10 pm
Haha yes! Tait got Kallis right in the bread basket! Now there’s physical pain to boot…
March 24th, 2007 at 9.12 pm
Tait and Hogg will gain heaps of confidence from this. Not to mention the Aussies finally being able to defend a large total. Assuming that Pollock and Kallis can’t manufacture a miracle from here.
March 24th, 2007 at 9.18 pm
About time we defended a total for once. Still not very happy all in all but then I’m a hard to please grump.
March 24th, 2007 at 9.20 pm
So far, the only bowler for the match to go for less than 6 an over is Nathan Bracken.
March 24th, 2007 at 9.25 pm
Scott, the way the Aussies have been playing recently, I thought it quite likely SAfrica would trash them. So I’m delighted with the performance. Hayden’s reintroduction and performance into the side has been a complete bonus.
Bad luck for Hodge to miss out given his hot form. But it was pretty inevitable. And he’s a pretty handy backup if required.
It’s all good just at the moment.
Can’t wait for all this to get to free-to-air.
March 24th, 2007 at 9.26 pm
How good has Bracken bowled? 8 overs for 33 and he gets his wicket. South Africa - see you later.
Scott - we defended a big score, rather magnificently I might add.
March 24th, 2007 at 9.29 pm
Hey Graeme - thanks for sending us in. Dickhead.
March 24th, 2007 at 9.37 pm
Just woke up. Seems I missed the worst of it, for Australia that isl
Hey Scott, you still have the sh_ts?
Michael, I think smith had the right idea based on our recent form. But unlike some teams, the Aussies don’t give up, learn from their mistakes and come back with new plans. Smith was probably hoping to get the pschological edge. But you know how it is…
Hurray! It’s all over! Australia have the edge now!
yes, Scott, we can defend!
March 24th, 2007 at 9.40 pm
Yes, I still have the sh ts. If Smith hadn’t have cramped up, we might have lost this. We did well to cash in, but let’s not have any complacency now.
Like Steve Waugh, I’m never satisfied.
March 24th, 2007 at 9.43 pm
My American son, 7 years of age, watches a little cricket and loves playing it, but the games generally don’t cater to his 7 year old attention span.
He walks in, moments ago, while South Africa is 9 down, and says, “I want England to get out.”
Haha! That’s my boy.
March 24th, 2007 at 9.45 pm
Like Steve Waugh, I think I love you.
March 24th, 2007 at 10.09 pm
Scott, I’m not complacent, I’m just happy. Please don’t try to make anything esle out of my simple pleasure.
I think you’ve been living in England too long ![]()
March 24th, 2007 at 10.12 pm
I’ve never been to England in my life! ![]()
March 24th, 2007 at 11.11 pm
I wonder how long it’ll take Smith to claim South Africa weren’t really trying as hard as they could, merely ‘preserving’ energy for the Super Eights?
Bloody excellent that his smug smirk has been wiped off his face.
March 25th, 2007 at 6.41 am
Scott - well, you sound it!
Have just returned from a stroll to the shops to buy the Sunday paper, and there I saw the Mathew Hayden Cookbook 2 on the stand in front of me! ( see my earlier post at 2.33 pm).
Had a quick flick through to check the recipes favoured by SNAG professional cricketers. All looked very trendy but with lots of fine slicing and fiddly presentation. Hard to believe he can exercise such fine motor control with his big mitts but there he is in the photos, delicately wielding his implements with the same look of intense concentration on his face when batting. It occured to me then that perhaps is exactly what he’s thinking about when he’s at the crease -chopping, slicing, filleting the opposition, though today it was more like he was trying to tenderize the ball. Perhaps it had Graeme Smith’s face on it? No love lost there.
March 26th, 2007 at 6.41 pm
Here are some headlines and quote snippets after our 5 losses in a row.
How Australia fell back to earth.
The Australian line-up (is) unsettled and unsure of itself.
Forget that piddly little Ashes urn.
Australia in turmoil for cup.
Australia look gone to me.
Australia cannot win Cup, Sir Viv says.
Can we beat Scotland?
Fast-forward a month to a month and a half, and we have the following adjectives and superlatives:
“Rampant defending champion Australia.”
No other sides (SA and AUS) look as certain for semi’s.
Aussies put up a chilling sign of class.
Proteas put in their place.
Oz now 6/4 after sa romp.
What a difference a month makes.
