India vs Sri Lanka, West Indies vs Ireland

By Scott 3 years ago, at the end of March Add your comment below

India go out of the 2007 World Cup if they don’t win tonight’s fixture against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, the Super 8’s start early, with West Indies and Ireland having already qualified in their group; the winner gets a flying start in the main section of the tournament.

I’ll be blunt though and say that my enthusiasm for the 2007 World Cup has been diminished by the tragic murder of Bob Woolmer. It was bad enough when I heard that the house of Mahendra Singh Dhoni had been burnt down by demented Indian fans, and it was made much worse when I heard that Woolmer had died. But murder? The Aussie Rules season starts next weekend, and I’ll probably pay attention to that more then the cricket. Footy players get pretty badly bruised from time to time, but they don’t get murdered for their efforts.

How about you? Is cynicism overwhelming your enjoyment of the cricket?

actually footballers do get murdered, like the columbian who scored an own goal.

My big question though, is what is the sport coming to if the failure of the two biggest teams in terms of support leads to the failure of the world cup? if india get knocked out it will be chaos, and certainly a financial loss.

but it’s not much of a sport if the whole thing is held to ransom by the success of the subcontinental teams. something needs to be done about this, and fast. never thought i’d sat this, but cricket is getting greedier and more corrupt than football!

Zaheer Khan’s last two World Cup matches (2003 final, and today’s) have an interesting parallel – his first over in both these games have been crap!

The cliche of “the show must go on” I think applies to the situation of Woolmer’s death. A man who has pushed hard for a truly global cricket World Cup in the form of associates has paid somewhat in dividends by Ireland’s qualification, while Kenya still have the opportunity.

The death will hang over the Cup sadly, and will forever be known for his murder, which is a shame because already some good matches have been produced. Next week comes the prospect of tight, almost ‘cut-throat’ scenario matches with the powers.

To forget about what’s happening off the field, I feel the need to concentrate wholeheartedly to what’s happening on the field.

I hear what you are saying, but these few maniacs are not “cricket fans”. Much like the minority who are football holigans, they use the cricket as an excuse. The speculation over Bob Woolmer’s death centers around betting scandals. That’s money-making greed, nothing to do with sport. It is an absolute tradgedy, but a worse tragedy would be allowing it to overshadow cricket’s showpiece. Certainly Bob Woolmer would not want that,

I suppose if I dwell on the tragedy and lose interest in the cricket, the scumbags involved win on all fronts. I’ll try to still enjoy the cricket.

    Hello everyone

Please forward this email to as many as possible

I urge every Indian to follow this PLEASE :-

If this is done then India will never loose another cricket game again:-

If India looses any match from today, please do the following:-
    - We Indian will ban/boycott all products for which Indian cricketers advertise
    - We Indian will not fill petrol or diesel in your vehicle for 3 days
    - We Indian will not go to any cinema to watch any movies for 3 days
    - We Indian will not go to any MALLS or do any shopping for 3 days

This enough will give enough shocks to every one responsible for Indian team to play like losers.

I sincerely hope this is followed

If its just a Game then let the crickters be only players and not Stars on TV or any kinda of a STAR Except Sports Star

Let us all just hope that they get the bastards as soon as possible, they get what they deserve and go straight to jail. But I would agree that if Bob Woolmer died because he fought for good “clean” cricket we should not lose interest in it. Thats not what he would have wanted. We should keep his achievements in honour and never forget.

Duckworth / Lewis being a bit of a joke again. WI to chase 190 but the Irish posted only 183…

Duckworth Lewis is definitely far superior to the joke they came up with in World Cup 1992 wouldn’t you agree?

And ho ho! India 4 down as Sehwag plays a shot off the middle of the bat to 1st slip…

I have to admit I don’t know what you mean. I started watching cricket in 93/94 when a few friends of mine took me to the Bay 13 in the MCG. What happened in the WC92?

What a shocker, absolute shocker. Both Pakistan and it’s pretty fair to say India are heading home.

The fateful day in South African World Cup History… ok, there have been a few ;) Couldn’t resist.

2nd Semi Final versus England of the 1992 World Cup, chasing 253 to win in a rain shortened 45 over game. South Africa were reasonably placed at 6-232 after 42.5 overs when rain intervened. 22 to win in 2.1 overs with 4 wickets in hand – it was doable.

The rain rule upon resumption gave them 1 ball left in the match. The target was not revised. They had to score 22 in 1 ball…

It was South Africa’s first World Cup and marked the re-birth of cricket for the nation. Shattered must be one way of putting it.

    hi…

i am just wondering … how good are these grand pa’s in this India team are ..

well i also have a big q’ . is that why is that they never even mentioned the name of v.v.s laksman.

i mean there is never been a player from south india for some reason. i feel bad when they show politics in this game too… though there is lot of stuff happening.

i vee been looking around these under sixteen, i mean there are more then a million cricketers in India . and why the hell on earth are these f#$ing selectors still sticking those grand pa’s . when they hardly play.

i agree that sachin is a legend but he is past, there could be more legends if these grand pa’s move aside
and give more chance to these young stars.

these people have got no time for their commercials, how can they concentate on the game.

well i feel atleast now they ll kick those old people out, like sachin, gangually. i have no clue why is that sewhag is still in the team.

i have a feeling that they gonna let sachin play with his walking stick next to him.

hope these world cup will be a lesson… but bcci gonna bribe or some how make the Bangladesh’s loss the match… coz there ’s some 25 000crores of commercial and betting money involved with India team.

I really don’t see why everyone’s turned on Sehwag. He’s just another of those wonderful players who bats with a total disregard for stats- like Mark Waugh, Jayasuria, De Silva, Gower and if you really want to go back, Keith Miller and Frank Woolley (all of them acknowledged greats). Sure, Sehwag could cut out some of his less adventurous shots and maybe push his average up to 37, but what you’re losing is a great deal more than 5 runs is worth. Just let the man do what he does best!

I have lost more hair by watching India playing cricket and thinking about feature than my work related stress in last 3 weeks. Well, India is out of world cup. Always first thing comes to mind is blame coach and players, do some changes in Team.
Let’s talk about Coach Greg Chappell first. Is he to blame for defeat? I say hum… No. Why? Well, Coach is a like a Guide Book which helps you to get better, but Coach isn’t the one playing on Ground. Players do. Lot of People is saying that Greg Chappell is responsible for disrupting team balance by changing batting line ups and doing too many experiments. In beginning it worked, and worked really well. I think changing batting line up was and is still a good idea. Reason I say that is, if you remember India’s Cricket History from Past 12 years than you will notice that India doesn’t have players who perform consistently. If top two wickets falls down in first 5-10 over than middle order will have to come and bat early anyway and that’s where they tumble with unfamiliar situation. “Greg Chappell tried to fix this situation by trying to make batsman more flexible than making batting line up more flexible.” Yes, there are times when He did little too much of experiment but he is not the one person to blame most for draining billions of hope.
Now the Players. Saurav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni, these are the big names of Indian Cricket. First let’s make one thing clear that if these five players perform than there is no other team that has stronger batting line up than India has. We blame all of them that they didn’t perform and we lost. True. For some of this Great Players, this is likely to be the last World Cup, don’t they feel as much worse as we feel for their performance? Pointing at Sachin Tendulkar or Rahul Dravid and saying they are not like they were before doesn’t solve the problem. They may not be what they were in performance level before their 30s but they still are good and best players. Just think of Indian Team without Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Saurav Ganguly and see what you are left with. I tell you that there isn’t and there will never be any replacement for these players. We should thank them for good games they have given us and hope they perform at their best and keep playing game of cricket that we love for long years.
People forget that there are two teams playing against each other. And both want to win. End of the day only one can win, one who players better and every day is not the same. We win today and we lose tomorrow. India has never played better cricket on foreign soil. Even if they would have made it to Super 8s, I don’t think they would have done any good against the likes of Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. These are the teams that believes in “it’s not over till it’s over”. Face it, India isn’t good as we like to think of.
Cricket is our Religion and Sachin is Our God, they say. People in India are the biggest fan of Cricket I would say. But loving the game and playing the game is different thing. Let’s Face it, India has best players that world cricket has every seen, but as a Team it’s as much bad. We have Players who performs but as a Team we fail to perform. We do not have consistency to perform as a Team, if one player or may be two players performs at his best than others fail. If Batsman does well and bowler lets us down and sometime it’s bowlers who perform good and batsman are the one who lets us down. Whatever it is, one may say India is a good Team but reality is they are not. People hope too much and believe too much in players than in Team.
So who is to blame most? It’s People. People are to blame for hoping too much in Team that is good but is not better or best. People are the one who wants to watch players playing cricket every other day. I remember 7 year ago when Cricket had its Vacation for 3 to 4 Months each year. But its Greed of People to watch more and more Cricket and Greed of Cricket Boards to make more money, there is no more vacation at all. Players need more rest, players want to do something besides cricket, and they deserve some peace from cricket just like any other person who wants to get away from his work and get fresh.
In end its not just team to blame for their performance; People are equally to blame for it too. People want more, they pay more and Cricket Boards give it to them. So People get to watch their game and Crickets Board gets more money, but all at cost of draining our players & excitement of Game.
There is no reason to go on riot. We all including players are equally disappointed. We just look forward to another day in cricket and hope they do better this time. At end of the Day it’s just a Game.
