Can v NZ; Neth v Scot, World Cup

By Will last year, at the end of March Leave a comment on this post

Canada take on New Zealand and Netherlands face Scotland in today’s games. I was depressed and alarmed at Zimbabwe’s listless, pathetic performance yesterday. They were shockingly poor. But as my boss noted, it’s not the players’ who are to blame. They’re just too young, too inexperienced. Nevertheless, they should not be in this tournament - morally or otherwise. Anyway, keep your eye on the scorecards below and leave your thoughts, like the winners you all are.

The Netherlands are taking their chance to kick some arse- Scotland are 15 for 4.

God I love watching John Davison bat. He is literally taking Mason to the cleaners.

Mason’s response is to dig it in short with slight varied pace. Come on man; club cricketers can put those away.

50 in the 5th over; I am all grins. This is why I love minnows - and John Davison. I hope they continue and not fall away as they did in WC 03.

John Davison just reached his 50 off 23 balls; eclipsing his previous best of 25 balls versus New Zealand in World Cup 2003.

3 of the 5 fastest 50’s have come against Canada so it’s only fitting that a Canadian strike back, ay?

Some more Commentator bashing for you. I think this is Ian Bishop.

Barnett just edged and was dropped behind. Bishop says something to the tune of, “And Davison is out, edged that behind and he is gone, Canada lose their first wicket…”

Not exact wording by any means, but he continued going on well after everybody realized he was dropped, and I was sitting there waiting for him to realize his mistake… but he kept going as if he was out. It was highly comical, and then he did the standard commentary cover up by moving on as if no mistake had been made.

The young breed have been taught well, or unwell?

That’s the end of that. :( Canada to lose big now. It was fun watching Davison play, I’ve enjoyed every moment of his brief ODI career.

Barnett has continued to keep a decent temp but this bloke Bagai is bloody boring. He was boring in 2003 and he is boring now. He looks to bat in survival mode only, Canada might as well have a go from their bright start, sending in this bloke is utter nonsense.

In fact, if Canadian officials happen upon this blog, please leave this bloke out! There’s a reason he had a disappointing 2003 and a reason he is hapless now.

    Bring in Dhaniram or Mulla.

Credit due where it is earned from this commentator basher. Smile worthy piece of commentary from whomever is currently steering at Cricinfo:

“22.3 Vettori to Billcliff, FOUR, Billcliff takes the attack to Vettori with this ball, more aerial from the bowler, and aerial, too, from the batsman, smiting it through mid-off. That’s the first boundary for nine hours.”

What I like about this is the person didn’t try too hard to be funny. And it turned out incredibly funny! I didn’t learn about what was on their toast or how bored they were on the 4th day of the Ashes Adelaide Test.

    Well written and well done!

Netherlands crusied home in the end with more than half their overs intact..

You talking to yourself, Michael? Some of us have to sleep/take kids to school etc!

Actually for the half hour I got to see of that game, I was being fearfully unpatriotic and cheering on Canada, hoping that they would do well enough against NZ to make England’s scratchy win against them look a little less scratchy. Sad, I know.

The NZ press here are thrilled with the Black Caps’ run so far, after rubbishing them endlessly up to the Chappell-Hadlee series. You should have seen the headlines after England knocked us out of the tri-series: “We’re even worse than England”. Man, how low can you go!

I was starting to wonder… yes I have been talking to myself and it’s really good to hear from you. I’ve lived in the USA the past 9 years; it’s a rare moment in my recent life where games are on at a normal time…

Believe it or not I am holding a productive job while watching while posting. I have three computers that I work on; well two. The third is currently for watching.

After this weekend I think we’ll have a good idea who to watch for. Presently it’s Australia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and South Africa if I were to pick a top 4. I don’t think West Indies were any good in their victory over Zimbabwe.

South Africa v Australia and India v Sri Lanka should be very interesting.

The timing is a bit annoying here — most of the games starting at 2.30am. I got up for the England/NZ game but was so annoyed at England’s lacklustre performance that I was in a sleep-deprived rage for the rest of the day.

Australia/South Africa will be very interesting — let’s hope it’s super tight and exciting, and that South Africa don’t choke/panic/give Australia an easy run. You are Australian, though, aren’t you Michael, despite living in the US? Otherwise I’ve been labouring under a misapprehension…

Hmm, I wonder why no-one’s put up a post so we can ramble on about England’s drinking and subsequent punishments. Maybe Will thinks that’s beneath the Corridor. I’m just glad Flintoff’s well away from the captaincy now — that’s just as it should be. And the inside story of what went on through the Australian tour would be fascinating. No, actually, I don’t think I want to know. Nor do I want to know what Langer or Harmison, or their ghost writers, thought about it either.

Yeah, it is actually easier to follow a match when you’re at work sometimes. I used to work at a news agency and there were TVs on sport all around you all the time.

I don’t know whether it was a question of Scotland being overwhelmed by the occasion or not but I wasn’t impressed by their performance against the Dutch.

I am Australian yes; and am moving the family there this year.

I personally didn’t want to bring up the whole Flintoff/Drinking thing for a few reasons.

    1. It wasn’t just Flintoff.

    2. This is a predominantly English followed blog and there’s no sense in digging it up and having a go, the media is doing plenty of that.

    3. This is off the field and while they are in a World Cup, the players ought to be able to have a little fun. We’re all human and we’ve all been drunk at some point. He’s been punished and that’s that.

    4. I think I am more worked up over this Woolmer shock to care about Flintoff and Co. cocking up.

Of course the Bob Woolmer thing overrides the English team making dicks of themselves and the more that comes out, the more shocking his death becomes.

But I still think it merits a few comments. I think the fans who shopped them probably wouldn’t have done it if the team had won. I think it’s a fair enough point that English fans spend a lot of money following their team round the world, often with little joy out of it, and would like to think these well-paid individuals weren’t getting blotto in between a Friday match (that they lost fairly badly) and a Sunday match at a crucial qualifying stage of the World Cup.

As for Botham’s attitude (“all us big stars are full of the larrikin attitude and shut us down at your peril”), what does he expect the team management to do? Pat Freddie on the head and laugh indulgently? I think a good kick up the arse is what Flintoff needs and the further away from the captaincy he is the better for England.

Of course the players need to let off steam and I think the tours they go on are far too long. But the timing was pretty pathetic, particularly as the performances they’ve come up with so far have been on the ordinary side of ordinary.
