Not only the defeats but the nature of defeats was even more telling. Both India and Pakistan were comprehensively outplayed in all three departments and it was a complete reversal of tags of minnows and majors. Both the teams did not stand a chance after losing first couple of over and the inexperiences sides played like true professionals, never allowing them to come back in.
Other teams must take inspiration from this and we will atleast be saved the trouble of witnessing predictable match results.

We all hope that England can be inspired by Ireland’s marvelous efforts, but with Andrew Flintoff being fished out of the ocean at 4am dead drunk in his long underwear, you have to wonder if they are just there for the party.

Clearly they don’t think they’ll need to apply for more leave from their employers.

According to the BBC Flintoff has been dropped as a result of the pedalo incident – whether they’ll try to spin it as ‘resting’ him remains to be seen.

I think Canada have missed a trick by putting England into bat. Freddie’s been rubbish with the bat for the last 6 months (at least), but still one of our greatest bowlers. I think our bowlers would have been vulnerable early on as a result of all of the idiocy of the last few days.

Although Gus Fraser has just disagreed with me, so what do I know?

  • Scott wrote:

Ponting wins the toss and bats.

At least Anderson and Plunkett get a few extra hours to catch up on their sleep. I wonder if Freddie would have been dropped had the next opponents been Australia? Somehow I doubt it. A good chance to rest his ankle and give Ravi a chance.

Actually Canada bowled really badly last time. They bowled 20 wides and have started with a wide again. I dont know what to expect now.
After yesterday, I have lost all hopes. Cricket is indeed a strange game. Did you know that Ireland has dismissed WI for 25 before !

  • Sean wrote:

Jess I think Davison’s decision to bowl first has more to do with his not wanting to face Anderson and Plunkett on a pitch that might be doing a bit.

  • Jess wrote:

    Good point

(I still think that our bowlers will be more psychologically vulnerable than the batsmen. But meh, it’s a moot point now)

How long before the barmy army strike up with “what shall we do with the drunken sailor”? :)

  • Scott wrote:

IF England suspended players for being drunk at 4am 20 years ago, Botham would have been lucky to get a game.

  • Jess wrote:

It’s already been dubbed ‘fredalogate’ by the media :)

Scott, I think that if England weren’t quite so woefully incompetent at the moment, these transgressions would be viewed slightly more kindly.

Pretty fair comment, Scott. There has been a drinking culture in cricket for years (who can forget Boonie’s 53 tinnies on the plane over here in 1989). Then of course in 1993 Aussies ditched the beer culture, were they sponsored by Coca Cola?

I feel a pissheads XI coming along, I’ve got Fred, Both, Roy Symonds and Rod Marsh. Care to add, Scott?

The Epicuran, Matt Hayden, has got himself out, but Punter is settling in, and he needs 31 for his 10,000 ODI runs.

  • Andy C wrote:

As a matter of speculation anyone know who is vice-captain today with Flintoff and Strauss not playing? Surely someone will be needed to take over when Vaughan tweaks a hamstring going for a second run when on 98 and gets run out one short of his first ODI century?

  • Jess wrote:

    Colly?

  • Andy C wrote:

Would be my guess but he was under pressure for his place only just before the Commonwealth Bank finals. Our only consistent player in both forms of the game appears to be KP. Let’s just make him captain and have done with it. It’ll make things interesting if nothing else.

Yes I was speaking in jest..Jess. But in seriousness options are a bit thin. Also my prophecy of MPV being out on 99 has failed to come true.

Okay slightly interesting turn of events as Gilchrist and Ponting both fall with the score on 116…

Watched Ryan ten Doeschate playing for Essex last season – looks like a decent player, if not exactly world-class.

Hi all. Night all – can go to bed now Vaughan’s out. At least he didn’t do the hammy on 99 (thanks for that cheery thought, Andy!).

    Don’t take a mouthful, Jess . . . how about Nixon for VC????? only kidding . . .

Thank God for Brad Hodge, Clarkey would have had us scoring 279 or so in the allotment. There was a century to lose today and Michael Clarke managed to do just that quite nicely. Selection woes when Andrew Symonds comes back, if I were Clarkey I’d be sweating a bit over the next week.

Kudos to Brad Hodge on a splendid innings. Ricky Ponting was looking in superlative form before Doeschate pulled off a stunner. He’s got a bit of a weird bowling action that bloke; he actually leaves the ground off his right foot into the jump and comes back down on the same foot.

Hayden and Gilly another circumspect opening without really cashing in, a whole tournament lies ahead though.

So the buzz words of the day on the England front is soft, softer and softest? Why am I not surprised?

thanks scott; a nice xi – sadly they will lose every game by default as they will all be permanently suspended. i guess we are now going to have to have to abandon the english selection policy of picking bowlers who can bat and go instead for all-rounders who can float. or maybe you have to prove your ability to drive a pedalo before you earn the honour of representing your country…

There’s no dodgy circumstances round Woolmer’s death, is there? Very, very sad, and let’s hope the fury in Pakistan about being knocked out of the tournament does get tempered by some sadness.

I’m pleased Flintoff’s been censured — it’s a bit like that time in his early 20s when his manager gave him a kick up the arse and told him he was wasting his talent with all his curries and drinking. He needs to perform, and he’s not.

  • Sean wrote:
    March 18th, 2007 at 7.56 pm

Not sure Kathy, I’ve heard he was found next to a pile of vomit and I wondered if he’d been on the lash with Freddie but I’ve also heard he was diabetic and had a heart condition.

I wonder how the Pakistan fans who were calling for his (& Inzamam’s) death are proud of themselves.

Nah, great Nixon stumping and a less than impressive LBW. No one is dwelling on it, haven’t even seen a Hawk Eye on it yet. I reckon the batsman was unlucky.

  • Tom wrote:

Surely the timing of Woolmer’s death is cause for concern?

Poor Canada, they looked legitimate for a little period, yet two wickets in 9 balls slammed that door in their face.

  • Scott wrote:

Very saddened by the news of Woolmer’s death. He was an original fighting Englishman.

  • Michael wrote:
    March 18th, 2007 at 8.44 pm

    I agree with Tom.

Chumney finally realized he is a hulking character, he’s been 220lbs of wasted space for the past 2 dozen balls.. zzzz….

You either block yourself to a loss, or you have a go and give yourself a chance to win and lose. I prefer the latter.

  • Kathy wrote:

Well, I’ve been very, very unimpressed with England this morning and usually I’m their staunchest apologist (for instance I find it particularly stupid the way everyone blames everything on Fletcher who I think is a fine coach — it’s not his fault the team go out on the piss at the worst possible time, and play like…. a bunch of very average players). Because that’s what they’re looking like today — very, very average. To have any credibility, they had to be ruthless against Canada and Kenya, the way Australia was against the Netherlands. Strikes me that Canada are putting up a better showing against England than England did against NZ the other day. I am not happy.

  • Michael wrote:
    March 18th, 2007 at 9.10 pm

I feel Nixon and to a certain extend Collingwood have played in the way you are searching for. Nixon’s final bash was a vital breath into the final score, and that stumping changed the momentum in the match from Canada to England.

    Nixon as MOM for me.
