Ireland v Pakistan, World Cup, Kingston

By Will 3 years ago, mid-March Add your comment below

It’s St Patrick’s day – as if Ireland needed any further inspiration. They were excellent against Zimbabwe but Pakistan are a whole different mercurial, unpredictable, brilliant animal. But as their captain said after their tie against Zimbo, they really have nothing to lose; they are the banana skin.

Watch it, follow it, leave comments and whatever.

Bangladesh bowled India out for 191. I have to say the Bangladeshis were brilliant. Pakistan can point to a seaming wicket, and it will be interesting to see what their seam attack does, but there doesn’t seem that much wrong with the wicket at Queen’s Park Oval.

  • Wraye wrote:

well India all out for 191 against Bangladesh, who would have thought it?

By the way, you can tell that India and Pakistan are playing today because Cricinfo is soooooo slooooow. I am updating on the BBC website.

Billy Bowden having words to Younis and Inzy. I have a feeling it’s in regard to Pakistan’s pathetic stare down and words to the batsman every other ball. It’s getting old and quickly.

Get fired up, have your words. That’s fine. But leave it alone after that.

I think what will happen, rather I hope what will happen, is Ireland wins and wins with a smile.

Will, that is vastly over-stating things. The ICC has spent millions doing development work over the past decade, organising tournaments, getting small nations to play decent cricket against decent nations. Zimbabwe beating Australia in ‘83, England in ‘92, or Kenya over the West Indies in ‘96 are all bigger upsets. Today is merely vindication for those policies and a f- you to all those commentators who’ve questioned the minnows right to be there, or claimed the group stages are a waste of time.

What a game! Way to go, Ireland! I wonder if this’ll be in the news at all tomorrow in Ireland. Is anybody from there? It was a great game, and the Irish fans were having a blast (among some very tense moments). I didn’t even know there were so many people interested in cricket in Ireland.

It’s a sad day for Pakistan though. Rameez Raza says a few heads will roll. My condolences. But surely, this is very, very good for cricket.

How Cool. Ireland putting Pakistan out on St. Paddy’s day. Cricket might yet grow to be a real world game.

Just unbelievable! Upset Saturday. St Patrick’s Day Mahem. Stupendous upsets. Remarkable courage by the underlings.

Pakistan is going home. India has a real chance of taking off as well. Spineless? Playing on reputation alone? What do you guys reckon?

  • Pratik wrote:

Nah. I’m sure India will bounce back and make it to the second round.

And Pakistan have been exposed without their bowling stars.

Both teams can be accused of being a little casual though. Thinking that they’d get some batting practice by batting first.

To be honest, India lost to an under-19 team… look at the Bangla top order! But a great performance by them. India just needs to drop Sehwag and things should improve.

I was eating dinner last night with my wife’s family at a lovely French Restaurant in central California. I spotted two forlorn couples entering, taking a quiet seat and consuming their meal. I’m certain this was meant to be a celebration dinner and enjoyable evening on St Patrick’s Day. It wasn’t.

    They were from India.

My goodness, I haven’t seen more glum faces come from my own boys when they’re informed they can’t have ice-cream.

It’s so nice to have the world scrutinize someone other than Australia at present.

“Jamshedpur, Mar 18 (UNI) Joining with the protests by the cricket fans in many parts of the country, the enraged cricket lovers here took to the streets and burnt effigies of Indian players today following India’s shock defeat over minnows Bangladesh in their world cup opener.

The fans shouted slogans against team India players for their poor show and asked the BCCI to call back the team.

I suppose that’s one way to handle a loss. If the Indian players are supposed to be playing for the pride of their country and their country is burning images of them; I wonder how they are supposed to feel preparing for the next game? If I were from India I’d be ashamed not for the loss against a rising Bangladesh, I’d be ashamed over my countrymen’s actions.

And I thought English fans were harsh…

Newsflash – “Bob Woolmer, the Pakistan coach, has been found unconscious in his hotel room.”

Is it just me or is this shocking? I have no doubt that Pakistan, as a cricket team, has class and the ability to beat anyone in the world on any given day. Once those players get onto the field it is their responsibility to perform. Woolmer should not be taking blame for this.

This better not turn out to be what I am fearing.

  • Michael wrote:

Coach Bob Woolmer has died. :( This is just shocking. If any involvement from a Pakistan fan/player/official is involved, Pakistan should be banned from International cricket.

‘If I were from India I’d be ashamed not for the loss against a rising Bangladesh, I’d be ashamed over my countrymen’s actions.’

I take it then that you were ashamed when the Aussies were charged for bad behaviour on field, and when the Aussie crowd came under criticism for making racist comments or being rowdy?

I am not ashamed of either (losing or reaction to the loss). My countrymen’s actions don’t reflect upon me. If anybody is going to judge all of India by such news, they’d be wrong. And trust me, there were no educated people wasting their time in those protest rallies. There are plenty of imbeciles in India who do such stupid things (just as there are in Australia).

We do need to stand behind the team though, and give it some extra support in this time to encourage them to do better. The players will be unfazed by the reaction though — they’ve seen it all before. And thankfully, those “fans” are all back in India.

  • Michael wrote:

Yeah whatever mate. Burning effigies, stoning houses, lighting stadiums ablaze; yeah I am not too worried over sledging on the field or remarks in the crowd that happens at every ground of every team you visit. Your comeback is a joke mate. A joke.

Don’t even tell me India never speak in their native tongue and use abusive or racial remarks.

  • Angus wrote:
    March 18th, 2007 at 9.10 pm

Bob Woolmer is dead. This is awful. I hope there’s nothing sinister behind it.

What a crazy tournament. A plane crash twenty feet from the Aussie team, where everyone survives. Six sixes in an over. Bangladesh beat India. Ireland tie with Zimbabwe and beat Pakistan. Flintoff found floating in the sea, drunk, at 3am, sacked from vice-captaincy and dropped. Woolmer found unconcious in his hotel room, then pronounced dead at hospital. We’re only into the second week of the tournament.

  • Angus wrote:

The only thing that would have made it crazier is if Asif and Shoaib had arrived, failed a second drugs test, and been banned for life.

  • Pratik wrote:

A plane crash 20 feet from the Aussie team? When did that happen? I wonder how I missed that news.

  • Pratik wrote:
    March 18th, 2007 at 11.18 pm

    Michael,

    1) I never mentioned sledging. That’s an accepted part of the game, and nobody gets fined over it.

    2) My “comeback” wasn’t a comeback at all. You missed the point entirely. Never did I deny that the Indian fans aren’t doing some ridiculous stuff (including making inappropriate remarks). Just that other Indians doing something doesn’t reflect on me, and hence wouldn’t shame me (as you claim it should).

    3) And then I was pointing out that even though you claim that you’d be ashamed of your countrymen’s actions, maybe you wouldn’t really. All those things I mentioned were things that you should’ve been ashamed of, if what you said was true. I am not denying that Indian fans don’t make racist remarks. My point is that that doesn’t reflect on me personally, and hence I don’t need to be ashamed.

After all-it’s only a sport. The 20th or so, in Ireland-after handball.
At the moment-conspiracies abound. It is only a matter of time before the ‘Anglo’ headlines read “The mafia or Murphia poisoned Mr Woolmer’. And was there a book depository nearby? No???
In an age-where the concept of irony is overused and misunderstood-let’s try this one-”Some teams booze up-eh! but those Paddies just want to play sport. Tut-tut!
