Sri Lanka vs Bermuda; Ireland vs Zimbabwe

By Scott 3 years ago, mid-March Add your comment below

Today’s game between Ireland vs Zimbabwe has some potential for an upset; Sri Lanka vs Bermuda looks like it could be one-sided.

Ireland vs Zimbabwe is in Jamaica, so it starts an hour later. Chat on, game on!

I am really fed up of these stupid matches. As it is in India we have to watch the match past midnight, and there is no way I am going to watch Zim beat who?aha Ireland. Looking forward to some cricket.

What are you complaining for, Basketer? The games don’t START till midnight for Australian viewers.

Poor Kevin Hurdle of Bermuda has just bowled a 14 ball over- 7 no balls and a wide. It’s his own fault, but still embarrassing for him.

I am complaining for the allocation of teams in the groups. I would like a FIFa like system of random grouping in the cricket world cup. Actualyy that was practised earlier.

  • Scott wrote:

Each group has two minnows and two ’strong’ nations.. that seems pretty sensible to me.

Ireland are off to a good start, 42 for 1 after 9 overs, on a seaming pitch.

I think it is sensible as well. The reality is we don’t have 32 somewhat competitive nations such as the soccer world. We can’t totally compare to them in terms of scheduling and pool matchup’s.

I’m liking the look of Bray here. He’s playing a real gem. I’m in fact choosing to watch Ireland v Zimbabwe over Sri Lanka v Bermuda because I believe it will be a better game. And Bray is keeping my faith alive.

  • basketer wrote:

Yeah Michael, I guess you are right. If we are unable to choose more than 8 competetive teams well, a question even groups is actually ridiculous.

Actually, Ireland might give us the first wanted hickup of the WC. I pray they do. Somebody pump up the WC.

  • Michael wrote:
    March 15th, 2007 at 4.53 pm

Yeah, and your wish for good, competitive games is a great one. It will come in the 2nd round. If we *did* have random pools, you might find the Super Eight made up up a number of minnows. That would have ruined the entire 2nd stage in my opinion.

We still have the following Round 1 games to savour:

    Australia v South Africa
    India v Sri Lanka
    England v New Zealand

I honestly can’t pick a winner out of each of those games right now. Any of them could win.

Geez it sounds like Bermuda is fielding like champions (except for the Jayawardena drop at slip first ball by our favourite beefy Police Officer).

I’ll be watching the highlights later and looking forward to the catch Cricinfo describes as:

“42.1 Cann to Jayawardene, OUT, what a blinder! Brilliant stuff from Hurdle in the deep! Jayawardene slogs this from middle and leg very, very flat in the air over midwicket, and Hurdle, covering good ground on the ropes, dives full length going to to his right and plucks it, one-handed, as it dips on him!”

Michael, your description of Bermuda actually made me click on the scorecard for SriLanka as well :O :P .
On your comment, yeah it is an open cup at the moment. Which team are you supporting by the way? I am for India all the way, more than that I want the Australians to lose.

  • Michael wrote:
    March 15th, 2007 at 5.37 pm

Doesn’t my score on the left (

  • Michael wrote:
    March 15th, 2007 at 5.38 pm

Doesn’t my score on the left give me away? I’m currently 115*, I must be Australian. ;)

Jokes aside, I am a one-eyed Australian fanatic who has his favourite players from other teams but generally wishes to see everyone lose to us.

I have/had a soft spot for Brian Lara, Romesh Kaluwitharana, Sachin Tendulkar, Alan Donald, Shane Bond, Andy Flower and Heath Streak.

I detest Graeme Smith, Sourav Ganguly, Arjuna Ranatunga and Kevin Petersen.

Once upon a time I was a very keen follower of Zimbabwe as well. The days of the Flower brothers, Heath Streak, Alistair Campbell and Paul Strang are sadly long gone.

I do wish you luck in the World Cup, not too much of it though. ;)

Congratulations Jeremy Bray on your hundred versus Zimbabwe! It was really a joy to watch!

    Hey Will & Scott,

Where is the cool new TV technology we have come to expect in a World Cup? Presently Hawkeye is being used to show LBW and I believe I have seen a couple occurrences of Ball Tracking and Delivery speed.

But where is traditional Snicko? The heat snick-o-meter? Super slo-mo? Spin Vision? Something new to admire?

Do you guys have any inside info?

I have just come home from work and done my usual cricket tai chi. How I envy you all with Sky! Cricket tai chi is a slow series of contortions with an old tranny radio trying to pick up coverage from the UK. I usually get the best reception when stuck in the position “flamingo with flatulence” but got lucky tonight. Radio is on the armchair. And Ireland finally get their first WC wicket – yaaah!

  • Michael wrote:
    March 15th, 2007 at 7.32 pm

First WC wicket? How about first WC century?

Enjoyed your description of Cricket Tai Chi mate!

And Sri Lanka slots into 2nd Biggest World Cup win in history.

  • Wraye wrote:

It’s turning out to be a great game – unlike the SL v Bermuda carnage. Oops, have to do some more Tai Chi, the bloody French opera channel is breaking through.

  • Sam wrote:
    March 15th, 2007 at 8.35 pm

Is there streaming audio on the WC matches anywhere? It would be nice to listen to the odd game whilst trying to work. Radio Tai Chi doesn’t work out here.

  • Wraye wrote:

Ah, grasshoppa, attaining pose of the nervous armadillo got rid of the warbling French woman. This is getting exciting!

  • Michael wrote:

Ireland needs another wicket or two in a hurry here. 162/5 needing 61 from 80 balls.

  • Michael wrote:

    I’m on it.

  • Wraye wrote:

got one – run out! Toilet breaks work!

Sorry Sam, don’t know of any free-to-Internet coverage.

I went to bed at the rain break… glad Bray got his 100 but gee Ireland’s fielding errors are going to cost them this game.

  • Michael wrote:
    March 15th, 2007 at 10.16 pm

Pretty shoddy runout attempts will probably cost them the game… :S

  • Wraye wrote:

Nerves are showing all round here. Ireland started to lose bottle a few overs ago. Shame really. BBC radio just “announce” Bray as MoM though.

  • Scott wrote:

  • Wraye wrote:

WTF? I’m rapidly running out of wine here, Scott, help! They’re going to have to bowl very badly to lose this now. Splendid fight.

A tie! Only the third in WC history. Wicket with the last ball. Well played! That was a great game, ups and downs and thrills and spills. If Ireland had held those catches, it might have been different but this nail-biting stuff is what the game is all about. Dontcha just love it. Glad I stayed up for this now. St Pat’s Night down at the James Joyce is going to be wicked.

I can now down my last slug of wine and sleep well. Night, night mates. Thanks for your company :)

Tony Cozier is such a twit. Interviewing an Ireland player and says, “Ireland’s first game of a World Cup. You couldn’t want a better result than this!”

Um yeah, how about a win? That’s probably something wanted a teeny bit more I reckon.

Why are Commentators so daft sometimes? Some more than others certainly.

“49.4 White to Rainsford, 1 run, driven past cover – and he gets the single! This gets Matsikenyeri back on strike – not a good ball from White. Not a good over.”

Bullocks! He bowled an amazing over! 5 out of the 6 balls was to the inform and set batsman Matsikenyeri. He mixed it up, short, long, wide, it was brilliant! The batsmen couldn’t get him away for a deal sealing boundary.

Fancy Zimbabwe and Ireland playing out one of the best ODI games ever – a tie is worthy of greatness.

I listened to this game pan out in the second period this morning, with my Irish Politics teacher stopping class for 15 minutes to finish out the game.

One of the better Politics classes in a while I’d say.

School (Currently in my final year)

I had my laptop open, with a stream off the internet linked up through my earphones. In previous days I’d been talking to my Politics teacher, who emigrated to Australia fifteen years, about the match. He’s a follower of the Australian cricket team, but of course has a vested interest in the Irish. When Brent was caught in front, I told him of the situation, and he requested the earphones to be pulled out so everyone could listen.

15 people crowded around a tinny laptop speaker, listening to Ireland and Zimbabwe – quite incredible.

Can someone explain to a simple Welshman what the final wicket was about? The non-striker was given run-out because the stumps were broken at the strikers end? Was I even more drunk than I thought? A strong possibility as I was in a bar full of Paddies at the time.
    I demand enlightenment.
