Who is your second favourite team?

By Will last year, at the start of March Leave a comment on this post

Interesting email from James:

Have you done a thread about favourite teams other than England? I was trying to work out who I’d like to win the world cup if not us the other day, and I’d be interested to know what others think. I’ve always supported the Windies as a “second team” and sort of assumed everyone else did too, but that may not be so…

I’m with him on the Windies, but I also want Kenya, Scotland and Ireland to do well. So apart from your “main” team, who’s your second?

Pakistan, because when they are ‘on song’, they play such attractive attacking cricket and have great bowlers.

    South Africa
    ….they just always have been

Yeah, I agree with Scott. Pakistan ftw. However, for as long as I’ve been following cricket, Pakistan have always been the brilliant-one-day-a nightmare-the-next kind of team. You’d think that they’d be able to phase out this tag slowly over the years but if anything, it’s gotten even worse now.

I believe Pakistan have the strongest middle order, except for that Ponting, Clarke, Symonds and Hussey team, with Younis, Yousuf and Inzi. Their bowling, I believe, would have also been one of the better line ups if it weren’t for the injuries to Asif and Akhtar.

However now that those two are out, I think South Africa have the best chance to take it away. Wouldn’t mind seeing a Windies win though, I don’t know why but every true cricket supporter I know just loves that team.

Normally the Windies, but as a Welshman, the Irish will have my full support this year. Come on the Joyces! (and Bothas etc.)

I just want to see good cricket. And New Zealand are pretty exciting when they get it together.

It would be very nice to see them stick it to the big guys.

I’m an England fan, but tend to support New Zealand as my second team. They’re plucky underdogs with some good bits and pieces players and a couple of outstanding talents in Oram and Bond (kind of like England in those repsects!). I also like Fleming as a captain. Having said that, it would be nice to see the Windies win on home soil.

Obviuosly, every one has right to choose any team as his or her favourite. And it should be so people will feel that thay are really free to express.First I appriciate your efforts that you provide such a chance for us to express our veiws, thanks for that.
My second favourite is South Africann Team. This team deserved to win this wrold cup because this team has been doing hard work for last decades but unfortunaltely not succeeded yet.I hope this time the team will change the senario as become winner of the world cup. Please remember first favourite is Australia.

The Aussies are far to arrogant.
Ditto South Africans. (As spitting image once sang, I’ve never met a nice South African).
India would be 2nd or 3rd choice, this is down to the way they handle themselves.
New Zealand, as mentioned before are a mottley bunch, but I like them. I’d like to see them get to the Semi finals, but no further.
West Indies, I just can’t look beyond Runako Morten. Such a despicable individual.
Pakistan have too much dirty laundry for my liking.

But Sri Lanka have my vote. Kumar Sangakkara, is a fantastic cricketer, and an exceedingly well turned out young man. Muralidaran’s enthusiasm is so infectious. THe slinger Malinga, is unorthodox, and I love that. I also think Mahela Jayawardene is a great player, and a great captain.

Torn between two teams on this one. I have a real soft spot for New Zealand for the reasons given by Gringo and Neil above. But I also love watching Sri Lanka and am a self-confessed Murali fan. Love the countries, the people, the teams.

    Just to expand on mine:

Second team is the West Indies because the first series I ever watched was England v Viv Richards’ 1991 team. Amazing players, and cool with it.

Joint third - India for talent (though return of the ‘guly has taken the shine off. At the risk of sounding totally superficial, are those hair plugs, mate?) and New Zealand for class/guts

Fifth - Pakistan, who used to be higher but the primadonna behaviour gets on my wick. Incredibly entertaining to watch, though.

Sixth - Sri Lanka. Can’t get too excited about watching them in the field when Murli’s not bowling. That said, there is Malinga. Hmm.

Seventh - South Africa. Great team, but hard to love.

Has to be New Zealand. For the innovations they have introduced to playing of ODIs.

My main team is between England and Sri Lanka, i kinda have to support both! And no… don’t ask who i would want to win if they played each other! because i don’t have a clue!

Other than my main, there are a few teams i like watching:

South Africa - they are on a bit of a roll at the moment and are playing superb cricket, very agressive and going all out in all matches, with players such as Andre Nel, Graeme Smith, Gibbs and De Villiers standing out aswel as Pollock playing his last World Cup.

West Indies - a very unpredictable and exciting team to watch, they have the home advantage aswell. with players like dwayne bravo, fidel edwards and dwayne smith. and also u cannot forget brian lara playing his last world cup and maybe last series at home!

I would love it for Australia to be knocked out in the group stages though, that would be pure class.

The Windies, South Africa and New Zealand have all been my second teams in the past. I prefer Windies at the moment, though Sounth Africa seem to have the better chance of winning.

  • Mike wrote:

New Zealand for me. As for the rest, probably reverse alphabetical order…

  • Angus wrote:

Because I played for them in an international match, it has to be Slovakia. Hopefully they’ll make it into a World Cup one of these days.

If it were the Olympics, however, then it would be Serbia, because I’m the national coach.

This World Cup, though, it’s Scotland, and my adopted country of residence, Canada.

With all these bases covered, surely there will be something to celebrate.

NZ is the team I support.

If NZ don’t win, I would want Australia to win.

If not Australia, then maybe England.

Its hard. And I was born in England!

Hmmm - is it awful to say anyone but South Africa?

My second team used to be Zimbabwe. Put into perspective, I feel Andy Flower was one of the greatest batsmen of all time. A true champion.

Heath Streak was also a class act in every way.

Nowadays I don’t really have a second. As a true Aussie I want to kick all of your behinds… ;)

If not the Aussies, then the Kiwis for me. Their one-day cricket is quite irrepressible thesedays.
And if they can knock over S.Africa in a semi by a run on the last ball, then so much the better. :-) It would keep another ANZAC tradition alive….

  • Caro wrote:

India are my second favourites, then Sri Lanka or the Windies. I’d like to see Kenya do really well, NZ get to the semis- or final, (but not win), and England come last because their fans are the most self - righteous :-)

Easier in county! Have a tendency to follow Warwickshire players, so Sri Lanka have my interest at the moment. But I’m usually a South Africa girl… no real reason.

Dear Caro..you just can’t help having a go at us poor ,modest Brit’s…can you?
Myself,….I’d like to see Scotland win….but only if they played in kilts…..with your shy,self-denegrating
    diggers coming second :-)

  • Caro wrote:

    Dear Graham E Smith,

Happy to oblige! But blame it on my Scottish-disposed-by-arrogant-English forebears. It’s my conditioning, just like it’s yours to assume I’m an arrogant Aussie, and that it would be amusing to see the Scots play in kilts….perhaps the English team could all wear tea-cosies on their heads? Cross-dress? (Did Monty Python do a skit on cricket?) :-)

  • Michael wrote:

No, but watching Monty Panesar fumble and bumble and throw the ball in with his cooky left-handed style is just as entertaining.

Why are they always lefties? Tuffers? Anyone?

  • Nick Jones wrote:

Second favourite team: New Zealand. (The enemy of your enemy is your friend.) How can anyone dislike them? Their tiny population and their history of incredibly dull one-day clothing makes it impossible to begrudge them any victories that come their way.
