Even Baldrick wasn’t this cunning

“World Cup  plans on  track: Buchanan”

Ye gods, if this is a plan…

To be fair though, Buchanan never actually is quoted as saying that. It is another case of sub-editors licence. However, if Australia don’t have a markedly improved performance against New Zealand tomorrow in Auckland, the howls coming out of Australia will grow ever more shrill.

Mind you I am confident that things will turn around in time for the World Cup. There’s a lot of water to flow under the bridge yet.

I think its the best timing (from an aussie pov) for the team to have gone into a…well, slump, if you can call it that.
for any non aussie, in many ways, this is not good at all, because you know that Australia will find their mojo much sooner than later.
but, they still makes things interesting, these glimpses of fallibility.

2nd Test Auckland – Australia have hit 13 sixes and 31 fours today to be 4/336 att he end of their innings. It’s not over yet, but mojo found, I think. Yes, fallibility is more interesting.

Yeah well, NZ are 3 for 206 after 34 overs with Taylor past 100. They should have no trouble chasing this down. The big problem is that no matter how many runs our batsmen get, our bowlers can’t defend them. This has been a problem for 18 months or more now.

oh scott, have more faith in the aussie bowlers. Sure they’ve been bludgeoned a bit more than usual in the past few weeks, but that doesn’t take away too much gleam off the terrifying aussie attack. I think this unfair criticism of them just seems to stem from disappointment of the past few weeks – they DID win the Ashes 5-0, the first few ODIs of the CB series and just about every single thing before this for the past 10 years.

maybe I take that back just a little bit now.

Wow, what a run chase. So proud of our Black Caps. Though the big scores were hardly surprising given how tiny the Eden Park boundaries have become. They seem to have slotted the pitch in at a really weird angle in the ground. Ross Taylor is really a rising star — what a century for a young batsman. Well, that’ll get the betting agencies figuring and refiguring the odds for the World Cup. Australia finally toppled from the number one ODI spot by a series win by the Black Caps — woohoo!

well well well what a great win for the black caps, nothing more pleasurable than seeing Australians losing at cricket. While the Australian media will no doubt cast aside criticism of their side with more sulking allusions to the undesirable timing of the Chappell Hadlee series they can no longer hide from the fact that their bowling attack is lacking an incisive edge. And sans Brett Lee it is not the bowlers who are resting/injured. Bond was by far the classiest and most lethal bowler on display today. Cameron Whites bowling is laughable, he would struggle to get into a second grade club side in Wellington on the strength of the long hops and pies he apologetically tossed down today, hard to shake the feeling that despite his power hitting he is a 20/20 specialist only at international level. So lets hope the kiwis can whitewash this series. Recent history has shown that a slump can be a powerful reviver in one day cricket and maybe this is the wake up call the Australians needed

Congratulations to the Kiwis on a great win/run chase! I hope this series gains more credibility in Australia, now that NZ has taken out the trophy.

The only comforting thing for Australia is that the batting has returned, Watson was able to take wickets, White has shown that he should be sent back to state cricket to mature a bit more as a bowler and, the on-song Bond apart, the Kiwi bowlers had little more succes than the Australians.

I wonder if McGrath will be replaced with Clark now?

Agreed, Fiona — neither set of bowlers was able to defend particularly well.

After the last two weeks, I have no idea what to expect from England, Australia or NZ anymore.

Kathy, perhaps that makes it more fun, going into the World Cup, not sure of what may happen?

It is quite possible that Tighe hasn’t read a word of the Australian press condsidering his comments; the press here have been very vocal about the Australian cricket team.

Not surprising, after all.. the Australian public know good cricket when they see it. The good cricket lately has been coming from England and New Zealand.

Scott, today the big news item in Oz was Warnie’s Celebrity 20/20 charity match at the MCG! It beat the Chappell-Hadlee in the headlines on Channel 9 the “cricket channel”, anyway. Otherwise, the more reputable media here have mainly turned their faces away from the issue. ( you can check The surfer on this)
