Australia Day massacre open thread

By Scott last year, at the end of January Leave a comment on this post

A space for England fans to vent their rage on their team and also for Australian fans to do some unseemly gloating.

What’s particularly bad about this performance was the nature of the dismissals- several exceptionally soft ones and only a couple of batsmen were simply outplayed by the bowlers.

    ENG 110 all out
    AUS 111-1 in 24.3 overs

Well to look on the bright side: they did get a wicket.

Yes, England “managed” a wicket. Later replays showed that Nixon did not remove the bails with the ball but with his arm! Gilchrist wasn’t out. Nixon obviously wasn’t bothered about the technicalities. And this is the man who abused Hussey for not walking when the umpire didn’t give him out. No more “cheating” “unsportsmalike” comments from you Poms! It’s just hypocrisy otherwise!

And as for gloating, far from it! We Australians are absolutely fed up with England team and the lack of any decent game when they play. More than one ex-player, even one of our selectors, has said that there must be something seriously wrong in the England dressing room, for this to happen. It looks like most of them just don’t care and are throwing away their wickets. No doubt there will now be the usual rash of emails from Engalnd supporters calling for Fletcher’s head and defending Flintoff, yet ex-captains like Ian Chappell are saying that it is the players, quite simply, who are at fault.

As an Aussie why would I gloat about Englands poor performance. Rather I feel cheated having had to endure such poor cricket from a bunch of amateurs. There must be an English schoolboy side that would be more competitive?

the england bowlers can’t get a wicket though - they had to run someone out!

Being an England fan, I wish I could say that they’ll do better in the next match - but rather sadly, not only do Australia really deserve to win, England are just collapsing pitifully. We need Michael Vaughan back in the side! We can’t even win against NZ without Vaughany.

Just when you think things can’t get any worse, they do.

As someone who could never stand the English team since childhood, I expected to enjoy the recent thrashings that they’ve received at the hands of Australia. But even I am beginning to get annoyed at this shit.

I’m looking on the bright side. At least the English Players batting averages are being brought down to where they belong.

Kenya and Canada would have given us more of a challenge. Steve Tikolo is class. And John Davison is fun to watch. I can’t find anything enjoyable about watching England bat.

Andrew Symonds summed it up best in his reaction after getting Collingwood out. You’ve got to be kidding me.

What’s the point in “venting my rage” on the England side? What good would that do? It was practically a third-string side out there with all the injuries, they’re severely lacking in form and confidence and I feel really sorry for them.

Have been an England supporter for decades and have seen some highs and lows, but this really is the pits. What can you say? I just wish I had invested some shares in the paper tissue industry, I would have made a fortune by now.

    It really is desperate…

Another black mark against the ECB numbskull who agreed to the tour agenda.

Fiona - Gilchrist was out. Check Law 28.1(v). The keeper or fieldsman can knock over the stumps with any part of his arm, if the ball is in the glove/s or hand/s.

What really makes me mad about this match is that Brad Hogg took more wickets in 6 overs than Cameron White has in 5 matches, and yet he still can’t get a game. The guy’s one of the four greatest spinners in ODI history, for crying out loud, yet he’s treated with absolute contempt for following Shane Warne. The only reason that White gets in ahead of him is because of his so-called “superior” batting skills- sound familiar, anyone?

There’s no point in blaming the E.C.B on the tour itinerary,England are just a rabble who can’t wait to get back to mother England.

Doesn’t change anything, but just for future reference Fiona, the stumps can be broken by any part of the arm right up to the shoulder, so the wicket was correct, no matter how clumsy Nixon was.

    Gee, Marcus,
You got your way. Hogg has had 4 games in a row.
    29 overs.
    0 Maidens.
    177 runs.
    0 wickets.

Does that make you wish you’d moderated your comments a bit?

  • Michael wrote:

No Andrew, it just seems you are extremely short sighted. 4 games… wow… enough to condemn a man isn’t it?

  • andrew schulz wrote:

Seems to me quite a few members of the team have been condemned on less than 4 games. I was not being short-sighted, just pointing out some stats in response to some over-blown comments.

  • marcus wrote:

Andrew, you’re right, that was an overblown comment. Let me moderate it a bit. Off the top of my head I can only think of 3 spinners- Warne, Murali and Saqlain- who’ve had clearly greater success in the One Day game than Hogg has. (Maybe Abdul Qadir as well). Certain spinners such as Vettori and Kumble may be better bowlers than Hogg, but neither of them have replicated his success statistically IN THE ONE DAY GAME. Hogg’s done everything the selectors could possibly have asked, and it’s just frustrating that they insisted on playing inferior bowlers (White, Watson) because of their marginally greater batting talents. At any rate, you certainly can’t argue that Hogg’s definitely better than White as a spinner, and has in fact bowled much better than those stats suggest.
