Cricket in New York

India and Australia are planning a one-day series to be played in New York. More at Cricinfo.

News.com reported that Cricket Australia operations manager Michael Brown confirmed last night that Australia had been approached by India for the series, though the details remained to be worked out. “You never say never but details at this stage are sketchy,” Brown said.

Two possible stumbling blocks in the negotiations could be Australia’s tour programme and wrangling over the percentage of revenues to be shared between the rival boards, with Australia reportedly demanding an equal share and the Indians demurring.

What would New Yorkers make of it, I wonder?

I would certainly totter down from Montreal to see it. I have my doubts about it going ahead, though. We’ve seen so many series like this pulled in the Americas. Last year it was The Windies who were supposed to play. Organisers start advertising the likes of Lara coming to play, though no one ever asks the players, or looks at their full international calenders.

Would be great for the expat cricket fans in this part of the world. There are many clubs in NY. It is extremely unlikely to catch on with your average American, however. Shame, as it used to be the national sport.

As New York local, I would guess that most of the expat cricket community will be there in numbers.

Will just depend on where it is played. Most likely to the converted airfield at Floyd Bennett Field (the venue is linked at the Maddogs website under “following cricket in america”. Another location would be Staten Island at the minor league baseball stadium (which has an amazing view of Manhattan).

There is some talk of an “artificial surface” venue - which is probably SkyDome in Toronto. There are really no Domes in the NY area.

Also will be interesting to see when it would be scheduled (probably September).

Will regular Americans come along? Maybe with expat mates, but otherwise, they could not give a … err “hoot”.

Great to think we may see international cricket without going abroad though!

Probably the New Yorkers will be asking themselves who has the hot-dog and T-shirt franchise and someone will organise silly hats.

hmmm… i wonder if anyone but expats (and mates they drag along) will even come to watch the match. But still good to see cricket being promoted, Australia needs more countries to smash.

How many of you in the London area are going to see the NFL game (American football, for the uninitiated) that will be played there this Fall? At least the NFL seems to be putting the goal of spreading the game above the goal of short-term profits.

It’s exciting to think that international cricket of this caliber will be played in a U.S. city (though the USCA is such a basket case of turf battles that I wonder whether it will really happen), but the only way to get mainstream Americans interested in the sport would be to put some kind of quality cricket matches on free TV regularly instead of milking the expats for pay-per-view money.

Free TV will (IMHO) never happen… We only have PPV because it is a nice earner for the satellite companies.

The reason India would want this to happen is:

1) They get all the revenue from the games played here - and not restricted by internal indian tv rights issues.

2) The number of wealthy indians that live here.

Another distasteful money grab? Absolutely.

Do we care? Not at all…
