In some ways, the unexpected is what we have come to expect from Shane Warne. I’ve only just heard about his retirement, but it seems to be have been scripted from the gods. What better way to sign off than now? The Ashes are “home” and he will end as the leading wicket taker in history. Brilliant.

Your favourite moments from his career, ladies and gents? I’ve too many to mention…but his haul in the 2005 was quite special as was his batting. And his duel with Darryl Cullinan will always stand out. Champion.

Salim Malik was one Pakistan batsman who played Warne like non other, I’ve only seen footage of TV and I liked that so much I wonder how much more fun it would have been to watch it live…

That’s from Pakistani point of view obviously, on a genral level, my favorite Warne associated moment would be…that magic Gatting ball.

Any one of his countless demolitions of batting orders are synonomous with him as a bowler; so I suppose that is what I like to cherish, and remember him as - a destroyer.

Best single moment… probably when he returned from his drug ban, proved everyone that he was still the best bowler in the world by taking 26 wickets in three tests, and passed 500 wickets in the process. One of his spells in that tour was magical, all the tricks were on display, and he took 7 for something.

Warne is/was an exceptional cricketer, despite being an exceptionally flawed man. A lot - even more? - will be made of his flaws in the near future, his critics won’t want to let him retire with honour. They should differentiate between the two aspects of the man: as a man, an outright pig at times; as a cricketer, a legend of the game.

Richie is one profusely over-rated commentator who thinks no end of himself.

reading the Australian press over the last couple of days, their effusive praise of Warne the cricketer and their ommission of the flaws of Warne the human makes me think of the Monty Python line “He’s not the Messiah. He’s a very naughty boy!”.

People forget the international criticism of Australian Cricket following his lenient sentence for failing a drug test, people forget his involvement in the betting scandal that was covered up for 12 months by the cricket establishment and then basically ignored.

And these pecadillos are just his cricketing ones! I laughed myself silly recently when he described himself as a good role model!

The only place he would appear as a model is as proof of Leon Festingers theories on Cognitive Dissonance

The moment : Day 4, between lunch and tea
The wicket :- Hansie Cronje

There was a cross breeze blowing that afternoon, aiding Shane Warne’s drift. The spell that followed was a masterclass in flight, drift, dip and spin.
Hansie Cronje’s wicket captured all these elements.

The ball was tossed up, well above the eye-line, and was drifting towards leg stump. The ball landed about 4-6 inches outside leg stump and spat back.. It was surreal..
Cronje was playing for the drift and was shaping to hit the ball through square leg/mid wicket. The spin on the ball caught him by surprise and was left in no-mans land..
All he could do was spoon a tame catch to forward short leg.

It was brilliant…I became a believer!!!
