  • I think those speed guns are a load of crap. Somehow the white ball goes faster - I bowled 83-84mph in the Test match, and 93mph in the one-dayers. It's crazy. I hadn't bowled a ball for ten days.

    Warne: 694 and counting

By Will 2 years ago, mid-December Leave a comment on this post

Mark Nicholas was on commentary for Channel 4 when Shane Warne took his 600th wicket. Unusually for Nicho, his delivery was restrained. “Six…hundred…wickets for Shane Warne. What a moment” (or similar). It was one of those mountainous events in cricket which passes by all too quickly. I seem to remember the crowd gave him a standing ovation but, as this is a sport, we were immediately back into the action. I remember Courtney Walsh picking up his 500th and being astounded. Warne taking 600 was almost unfathomable.

And he’s now six away from his 700th. I need to sleep now, but if anyone has the inclination, it would be interesting to see against which countries he took his 100th, 200th etc (and how many were against England)

According to Wikipedia - [Alec] Stewart has been victim to Shane Warne for three of Warne’s landmarks, his 150th, 250th and 400th wickets.

I really hope that his 700th happens on the 26th of December in front of a full MCG!!
Mainly so i can see it live and be there when 700 is reached for the first time EVER!
The Victorian crowd would go ballistick!!! It couldnt be better scripted!! :P

I read an interview with one of the Aussies, I think it was Gilchrist, who said “Well yeh, you know getting 700 hundred wickets is one of the best things you can do in the game” as if to say that it’d be done before and it wasn’t quite as an amazing feat as it really is.

Despite being English, I really hope he gets it and I wouldn’t mind being his 700th victim.

It’s an incredible achievement (especially when you consider he was banned for 2 years) which he well deserves…

Actually, it was only one year he was banned for.

But it is an amazing achievement. He’s an absolutely incredible player, hope he’s still going in 2009, and just the most amazing cricketer I’ve ever seen. (And yes, I know people are divided over the greatest spinner ever, as they’re entitled to be, but personally, I’m a total Warne fanatic. Shame he’s Australian though.)

One of my friends saw him in Australia, and he bowled 5 dotballs; Warne moved one of the fielders by about 1-2m, and bowled the 6th delivery, and the batsman, after defending 5 in a row, hit it straight to the bowler in his new position. Like he’d been hypnotised, or something. And I’ve seen him do similar things when I go to watch Hampshire. Total genius.

At least, while watching England perform so badly, we will be able to see one of the biggest achievements in cricket at the same time! (Although personally, I think the 600 will be my favourite, given the way England are playing at the moment.)
