Anyhow. A question. If both the toss and Glenn McGrath are 50:50, would we rather win the toss or not face Glenn?

No Panesar really looks like a defensive choice to me. Maybe the wicket is different to what everyone expected other than that I can’t see the logic, Anderson isn’t exactly in great form.

Admirable though Duncan Fletcher is to maintain some consistency by retaining the same side, I’m fuming about leaving Monty out of the team. I can only hope that Giles and Anderson play the game of their lives instead of providing easy runs for the Aussies like the last test.

There’s a lot expected of Monty because he did so well in the past 3 series - it’s not the case that he’s being hounded in by the press. By the time he gets into the team the Ashes may be long gone… Fletcher’s neck is definitely on the line if they don’t perform - the press will jump on him as the experienced selector if this backfires. Fletcher is gambling on Flintoff putting in another magnificent performance. It’s a negative approach.

I also disagree about dropping Read for Jones, but he has history on that call so am not so disappointed. Read has time on his hands and I’m sure can’t wait for Fletcher to go.

I’d be more than happy to put my hands up and say I was wrong if we get a result - that’s all I really want!! Otherwise we’re going to hear a lot of moaning from Boycott

At least England won the toss. The only reason(s) I can think of for naming an unchanged side is that they’re worried about the form/fitness of Harmison and Flintoff and so didn’t want to risk a 3 man seam attack. If that’s the case then I would have rather seen Sajid in for Jimmy and Panesar instead of Giles. Still, too late now. Here’s to 80-0 on the board at lunch.

Well played by Bell and Collingwood! Even though the runmaking has been slow, I don’t actually think their approach has been defensive in the deepest sense — they’ve wanted to show, I think, that they can hang around for the long haul, and graft if need be, that they won’t give their wickets away, unlike the openers. I don’t think that’s a defensive statement — it shows a willingness and a drive to go the distance. Hopefully they can stay there till stumps. Even if they do pile up a decent total batting first, they will still miss Panesar later in the match though.

May as well call it a draw by that stage. Despite reports the pitch will break up on the third day, The Gabba supported a 380 4th innings total with cracks an inch wide. England would be looking for quick runs early, push well past 350 at lunch, and possibly declare for approximately 500 halfway through the last session.

You get an hour at the top order, batsman cannot get suitably settled and the early evening breeze will be blowing.

Will, very nice piece on the Warne-Pietersen duel. It has been a thrill to watch. Sometimes I have thought that KP was a bit overhyped but he’s been showing in Australia that he can live up to his billing, and then some.
