Okay there’s the declaration. Langer’s got his ton. England need 648 to win.
Live: Australia v England, 1st Test, Brisbane, 4th day

There is just the tiniest window of opportunity today for England, unless Australia declare overnight. Their lead already amounts to 626, and effectively they’re “playing” with England…like a bulldog massacring a toy. The longer they leave it, the happier England will be. Who knows? McGrath’s due to twist his ankle sometime over the next week…

Test cricket is great, isn’t it?

Perhaps Ponting’s back will be the ‘McGrath’s ankle’ of this series?
If we are trying to be blindly optimistic that England can bat for two days (and being blindly optimistic is the prerogative of every fan in this situation),then think about it – England would get close to 600. So picture the Edgebaston-like scenario of Hoggard and Harmison facing the last few overs tomorrow with 20 needed to win. Would they go for the win or try to avoid defeat? Personally, if we ever get to that stage, I’ll be ecstatic!

Cook’s shot selection is absolutely deplorable. He’s made it to lunch in one piece, but he’ll be getting a royal dressing down from his captain, one would think.
Plenty of pitch deviation and uneven bounce here. England 2 for 42 at lunch, and they are struggling.
November 26th, 2006 at 2.39 am
Bit harsh on Cook? I would be giving Strauss the bollocking if it were me. No excuse for that shot. And where are you all? Don’t go quiet just because its a travesty . . .
November 26th, 2006 at 4.46 am
Hey, less than 500 to get now! I’m optimistic. And I saw a camera shot of Fletcher laughing!
Has Warnie had liposuction on his jaw, or has he lost weight? HIs face looks different.
November 26th, 2006 at 4.50 am
I’m always harsh on Englishmen, Caroline. I wouldn’t be Australian otherwise.
I can’t say I had paid THAT much attention to Warnie’s jaw, Kathy, so I can’t say for sure.
England finally win a session and are 3 for 150. Some fine batting by Collingwood and Pieterson. Thank goodness they are not giving it up without a fight.
November 26th, 2006 at 4.55 am
A bit of fight is all I ask for.
November 26th, 2006 at 5.06 am
I gather Vaughany has been having a net . . .
Seriously though, glad for Colly. I just hate watching KP bat!
November 26th, 2006 at 5.12 am
Yeah, why’s that Caroline — not liking watching KP, I mean?
So Vaughan’s having a net, hmmm. Doesn’t want to bugger that knee by taking it too fast. I’ve just watched the video of Vaughan talking on captaincy, on the BBC sports academy website, and one thing that he said that really impressed me, and that seemed to be the case last year, was that a lot of captaining on the field is instinctive. You can have a plan, but you have to keep changing it all the time, depending on how your players are performing, and all the subtle changes in the game, so you need a plan B and plan C and plan D, and a lot of that side of it is instinctive. A lot of those clever field changes, bowling changes — just running on gut instinct. And if it works, you get the kudos.

Hi all, sorry about the time zones and dozing off etc. Oh god, KP is not out! Holy ghost!
November 26th, 2006 at 5.43 am
Bless Colly. 100 partnership up, At last, it is worth staying awake for. And as I write, KP gets his 50 and Warnie is not smiling. Am wrapped up in a duvet with a red-raw throat which neither water or Chardonnay can help. All seem to be perking up now at 6.43 CET. Any ideas on bacteria control, folks?
November 26th, 2006 at 5.53 am
Shot of whisky, dob of honey, squirt of lemon juice, just loosened with a dash of boiling water.
November 26th, 2006 at 5.56 am
Thanks, Kathy, have honey and lemon, never ever had whisky in the house. KP is bringing the fight on. Worth staying up for! How does it look? Storm clouds over the Gabba? Will the weather save us?
November 26th, 2006 at 6.02 am
Beyond Chardonnay, Wraye? that is bad!
Kathy, I can’t relax watching KP, because I feel he always gives the bowlers a chance, being so attacking and all. I know Vaughan said he told him to go out there and play his natural game in the last test last year, but I don’t have sufficient faith or optimism or risk-taking tendencies to trust that is the right way to play when in trouble. I know in theory people say your best chance of success is to play your natural game. But I’m too nervous a type to trust that! I like to be able to predict what will happen on the basis of what has gone before. KP is so unpredictable he blows my security blanket out the window. (Mixed metaphors galore . . . Lucky I’m not a sports writer. Hope you get the gist.)
November 26th, 2006 at 6.13 am
Oh my. Conspiracy theory: my security blanket has grabbed a special weekend-away ticket, taking several other blankets with it. Or was it your blanket taking mine?
150 partnership!
November 26th, 2006 at 6.21 am
Nooooooooooo!!!!! Poor Colly. Will he ever get a test century?
Let’s hope those reprobate blankets get back home by next Thursday!
November 26th, 2006 at 6.23 am
This is great – they’re charging McGrath. Well that was worth the last three days,if nothing else was!
November 26th, 2006 at 6.23 am
Kathy-Yep,
Warne has either been running to the nearest nurses home 20 k away, he’s taking his Mum’s pills again or a nip and tuck…….Hmmmmmmmmm… lets wait for the next Australian Womens Weekly or the urine test!!
November 26th, 2006 at 6.28 am
Tell me, tell me please! I hear from TMS that McGrath is bowling to KP with no slips. Poor Colly, I almost cried but then I am full of Chardonnay, bacteria and female hormones. Go, Freddy!
November 26th, 2006 at 6.31 am
Can’t tell about the slips, Wraye, because they have had to take the old man out of the attack! However, KP has started padding up to Warne over and over outside leg stump, for some strange reason. Not been doing it previously, and Warne is ripping the odd one . . .
As Lee goes for four . . .
November 26th, 2006 at 6.33 am
After enduring the last three days, I’m feeling positively giddy now!
Losing by, say, 200-odd runs, would seem like a massive and glorious victory.
Dunkirkian perhaps, but a victory nonetheless.
November 26th, 2006 at 6.38 am
Doh! KP is padding up because Warne is now coming around the wicket . . . sorry ’bout that.
November 26th, 2006 at 6.53 am
Ah, bruised heel. How delightful. We Poms must take our joys where we can. Sunrise here.
November 26th, 2006 at 6.54 am
oh Freddie. Oh f***
Warnie gets his man.
November 26th, 2006 at 9.16 am
Check out a Brisbane weather forecast – thunder and lightning predicted.
Yes, the ground will drain ok, but what about the light?
It’s a long shot – but tell me Ponting isn’t a tiny bit worried.
Basically this has been England’s last warm up game – now we need to win a 4 test series.
