Live: Australia v England, 1st Test, Brisbane, 2nd day

By Will 4 years ago, at the end of November Add your comment below

A superb day yesterday for Ricky Ponting and Australia, but all is not lost for England. I say that with my positive hat superglued to my scalp.

We might get a draw, you never know. Get chattin’

Willis (on Sky) was talking about aiming for the draw before lunch yesterday!

If things go well this morning, we can soon be back in contention here. You can’t have one bad day and then start with the ‘play for the draw’ talk. I hope no-one in the England camp has even considered the notion.

Sides have scored 500 in the first innings and still lost the Test match. But in England’s situation they are best off just setting a goal of winning the next session.

Agreed. I just don’t like the way that after one bad day (or session in Mr Willis’ case) everyone seems to just sigh and sink back into the same mindset we had four years ago.

Day two-slight hangover after staying at the local until the final session yesterday-must try that light beer that no one seems to drink here or another long day at the office in the morning.

Harmison and Anderson bowled a pile of dingo droppings yesterday-be hard to back that up with a similar performance today. Lets see what happens this morning but credit where credits due and Ponting was fantastic and the pitch is a belter. Freddie was not too shabby either-and that must be encouraging. Realistically the Aussies will have racked up 550 plus by tea tonight leaving Warne to do the damage for 3 days. The Pom batsmen have to play shots or it’ll be all over very quickly.

Anyone know why ABC aren’t broadcasting on SW? Heartily endorse all previous comments about Lawry- I turn the sound off and put some music on when he’s in the box. Oh for TMS……………you lucky lucky bastards!

I see there is a young bloke by the name of Will Luke who will be doing the commentary on cricinfo today. Any idea who he is? He he. Apparently he runs a blog as well.

England will certainly regroup – of course. The writing off of England in various areas of the press is way premature, but another shocking day here, and some of that talk may slowly become reality. They need three wickets in the first session, and they need to bowl Australia out – don’t allow a declaration.

That’s for their own good – personally, I’m hoping for double tons from Ponting and Hussey – then a declaration and two wickets to McGrath before tea :-)

    Wahey – Hussey gone!

Ken – check out yesterdays live comments

An improvement in the bowling – Flintoff has been increadible in his spell, getting bounce, hitting the cracks, making his off cutters bite, and bowling with good pace.

    A direct contrast to Harmison.

Freddie will carry the team through. Also have my positive cap superglued on. TMS are currently talking about the possible return of Vaughen.

Flintoff is incredible! It’s a pity for England he doesn’t have any mates out there.

The Aussie press/commentators talking up Giles – I think they want him in the side in Adelaide ;-)

  • Scott wrote:

Freddie will have to carry the team through, Wraye. The rest just can’t bowl to a plan.

Having said that, they were all better today then yesterday. But still only one wicket for the session.

    Anderson’s probably the most improved.

I’m not too worried yet, Scott, merely standing in the doorway of anxiety. I take some comfort in the fact that Syd Gregory scored 201 and Aus still lost the match – according to the great cricinfo!

Whatever, am just cracking open a Chardonnay – cheers to you all.

aaahhhh!!! God bless Hoggy, get’s Ponting LBW. Yaaaa!

    Bugger, now Gilchrist is in.

    Reach for another Chardonnay …

  • Wraye wrote:

and Gilchrist goes! Oh man, I could give Hoggy a big soppy, wet kiss.

    More Chardonnay ….

  • Tom wrote:

Gilchrist has 18 months to figure out how to face around the wicket, fix the problems in his technique that was exploited by English seamers..and fails second ball.

    Excuse the double post:

Is that swing I see Hoggard achieving?

Disaster here in the Cook Islands-the sky link failed and the bar emptied and worst of all-we missed the wickets.

Now to find an internet commentary………

Harmy! At last. Maybe that’ll settle him down.

Jones has been keeping quite well, I thought.

So does Australia declare now (at tea) with Clarke gone? They may as well, I guess. Or keep going and give Flintoff some more work to do on the old ankle. :-)
How good is Ponting? I think I detected a trace of steely resolve in that innings somewhere….

  • Jess wrote:

Well, finally Clark is gone. I’ve always rather enjoyed watching tail-enders tonking the ball around, but this is ridiculous. I don’t understand why England have always had such trouble dismissing the bowlers.

  • Francis wrote:

So, England are batting at last, and have had a decent first couple of overs. Can we be on top for this session at least?

  • Tom wrote:

    I liked this from Cricinfo:

McGrath to Strauss, FOUR, poor delivery down the leg side and Strauss simply turns his wrists, flicking it fine for four. Easy runs. Only another 7 million needed

  • loofer wrote:

oh dear oh dear oh dear oh dear.

2 out for England already… and McGrath gets both of them.

Now he’ll never bloody shut up. ;)

When was the last time England drew/not lost the first Ashes test.
    Give me a break.
They would do wel if they stretch the test into the fifth day and fourth inning.

    Another one bites the dust…

Let’s just see if Warney gets a go beforew stumps. That will be interesting, what with the turn Pietersen was getting yesterday.

  • SuperCujo wrote:

From cricinfo: “Tickets for the fifth day of the Test on eBay are attracting a top bid of $2″ chirps Brett Taylor. That much?

    hahaha

At least I might get some work done on Monday.

Can I be the first person to say “Michael Vaughan”.

I don’t know why. It just makes me feel better.

I’m glad I’m down under and don’t have to stay up all night to go through that torture.

  • Wraye wrote:

Your bat is looking safe for now, Elliott. England usually make a dingo’s donglers of the first match in a Test – par for the course really. Let’s hope that Lee bowls like a moron and gives us something to feed on. There might be something in the old dog yet, but I suspect, not at the Gabba.

Roll on December, please. My MCC calender pin-up of the month is Simon Jones and it’s all too depressing to not have him playing.
