7 days to go; are you ready?

By Will 4 years ago, mid-November Add your comment below

As my Dad would’ve said, “the sands of time have nearly run dry”. It took me years to understand what he meant, so I won’t bother explaining it to you far cleverer people. The Ashes are a week away and it’s damn exciting…but what are you most looking forward to?

Is it the late nights, if you’re an England supporter, cowering (or exulting) under the duvet with the radio?

Audible sledging from the players?

Commentators…anyone you’re looking forward to hearing? (we can’t wait for Big Tone)

Tell all

Shouldn’t you be celebrating Ed Joyce’s call up about now? I could do with someone putting a positive spin on it after reading the Grauniad’s view (not to mention Tim De Lisle’s).

They’ve picked him because he can fill in anywhere as opposed to Key and Shah … and Fletcher hates Shah as he thinks he is lazy.

    Latte early doors please.

It’ll be the duvet and TMS radio for me most nights and being on CET it’ll be an hour later than the UK – groan.

I approve of Joyce’s selection actually, though I doubt he will see much action beyond the drinks wagon. Tres has my full sympathy and support. I reached a stage this summer where I was so stressed out I nearly did a Tres myself. I became so humungously numb about cricket. But this is the Ashes, oh man, the Ashes.

I want to see if the hype about the age diffences will come true. I want to see Monty play and get wickets. I want to see how Warnie plays. Will Ricky throw his toys out of the pram again? Any dodgy umpire decisions? Most of all, I want the world to see that the English and Oz cricket fans are the best supporters in the world and have all the games played in the spirit of 2005.

Depending on play, I might even go to the Ozzie bar in the center of Bonn, imaginitively called “Down Under” and share a stubbie and Sky TV with the “enemy”.

I want to see less mindless trashing of England players/coaches/management when things don’t go perfectly. They’re under enough pressure as it is.

I’ll be cowering under the duvet listening to TMS, not forgetting following along on my laptop, particularly if Roebuck is ever used as a summariser in which case the radio is turned off.

Sadly it looks like the Giles/Monty decision has already been made in favour of the ‘King of Spain’. I can’t see Hoggard or Anderson batting 8 and I doubt they’ll seriously consider 2 spinners. I hope I’m wrong.

I’m looking forward to being able to be proud of my team in a tour over here for the first time since 86/87. It’s great not have that same sinking feeling again. Last series I was caught on the hop. Whilst they have not had as ideal a lead up this time, I still think it is worth getting excited about the prospect of
England not embarrassing themselves. I may even wear my terribly embarrassing “Are you ready for Freddie?” t-shirt to the WACA!

Were I fifteen years younger, I would also be looking forward to trawling the cricket ovals of suburban Perth looking for the enigmatic ‘Academy Squad’, knowing, of course, that Michael Vaughan would take one look and fall madly in love with me . . . alas what a difference in reality fifteen years makes.

Soooooooo. . . does anyone actually know where they will be based? I promise not to stalk . . .

Caroline, I’ve been asking my sister-in-law in Perth the very same question. Look out for English cricketers, I’ve been telling her, particularly Michael Vaughan. Alas, he is already taken, but I just want to see him *back*. I’m not ashamed to say that I stole my children’s magnetic letters months ago and wrote on the fridge: “Michael Vaughan — we just want our captain back!” I know lots of people think it will never happen, but…..

If she finds anything out, let me know. I’m sure I could fob it off as an educational outing for the kids! These are the same 5, 3 and 3 year olds who decided which country to support in last year’s Natwest series based on what colour PJs they had on that night! At least one of them was in blue! I have since burned all sets of yellow PJs and nighties, so I have all the support, and not my husband . . .
