England XI vs New South Wales

By Emma 2 years ago, mid-November Leave a comment on this post

It’s the tour match no one is talking about. Literally. After the shocking performance the other night, the first 3-dayer got a couple of mentions. But tonight, after consulting both my web sources (Cricinfo, naturally, and the Beeb) and finally the last resort of 24 hour news (Sky Sports, Sky, BBC) I’ve come to the conclusion that Britain is in some kind of denial. For a while I thought I was getting the date wrong.

The BBC now seem to be paying enough attention to note that England have lost the toss and have taken the field. As with most warm ups these days, England have managed to convince the opposition to let them field almost their entire squad in some way or another. Of the 14 players taking part, 11 may bat. Not making even the initial cut are Chris Read and Liam Plunkett.

I’m not sure which I’m more interested in. Some kind of live coverage? Or an accurate measurement of the size of Geraint Jones’ smirk?

Update: Cricinfo are back in the race! Click here for the scorecard. It isn’t linked from the main page. Cricket Australia seem to be slightly quicker in updating at the moment.

Emma - you’re a genius! I couldn’t find it anywhere. Not even on radio over here . . . Thanks

BBC now have a scorecard, but they are stuck at the 10 over mark (mind you, that’s more up to date than cricinfo!).

    Thanks for the link, Emma!

Shamefully, the ECB’s “live” scorecard has also been stuck at the 10-over mark too, same as the Beeb…

It’s crazy - with this pathetic level of coverage, you’d never believe we’re less than a fortnight away from the most highly anticipated Ashes series in 20 years!

Are they having a laugh when they call it an England XI? Or all they all just missing the V off the end!

Emma, I found the sportinglife.com site by far the most up to date in terms of keeping the score. And have you seen Geraint…. is he really smirking….? ;-)

Sportinglife also have a really good news Ashes “subsite” at their web page.

Cricinfo are really slack at the moment.

    Two wickets to Gilo!

Play two spinners, that’s what I’ve been saying all along.

If it is indeed true that Geraint has the nod, I wonder how much say Flintoff had. They certainly are buddies and I’m sure Freddie favours him over Read. They certainly looked like they were having a joyous reunion mid-pitch after Jones’s catch the other day. And they bat well together.

It’s looking like a long hot summer for England. They will need to improve dramatically within 2 weeks.

So I actually spent yesterday having an absolutely wonderful day in the sun drinking beer with friends and watching the match down at the SCG.

Jaques was impressive again, and with Langer not doing particularly well… he has to be a chance if either Hayden or Langer do badly in the first few Tests.

Flintoff was seriously the only English bowler I rated. Sure, Giles got some wickets, but he just bored the batsmen to death, he didn’t actually look threatening at all.

wtf happened to Monty? That was rather lacklustre for someone who was supposedly playing for his place in the side…
