Bob Woolmer is blogging for us (or for him, I should say) at Cricinfo. Visit Bob’s World.

Cricket is a great game to play and a fun one to comment on. I would like my blog to reflect the views of the playing and coaching fraternity and I will try and cover as many topics as possible. Including Pakistan, drugs in sport, modern training methods for cricketers, the itineraries that put players in the red zone as far as injuries are concerned and to explain the many myths that surround cricketing technique.

Those of you who wish to know more about this game and want to voice their opinion are most welcome to let me know what you are thinking. I will try and address these issues as well as others that occur.

Let’s get “stuck” into the first one!

Mr. Bob Woolmer you are doing a good job for Pakistan, i think u can lead the Pakistani team to the 2007 World Cup. I have an idea for the Pakistan team in the fieliding area. You have probably have used this technique before but I just wanted to share with you anyway. If you think its a good idea please let me know. I will be glad to know that I was able to contribute an idea to my Pakistan team.

Normally, the players wait for the ball to come to them when they are standing in the field and watching the bowler ready to deliver the ball, all the players look at where the batsman has hit and then the corresponding fielder reacts to the racing ball.

My suggestion is that, every fielder should always think that everytime the batsman hits the ball its going to come to him. And ofcourse, the ball is not going to go to all the fielders, its only going to go to or near one fielder. When the fileder pre-assumes that the ball is going to come to him, he is ready to make a quick run for the ball, that is half the job done already. Now, all he has to do is to catch it, and he can catch it with confidence, because he already knew that the ball was going to come to him anyway. If it does not come to him, who cares, atleast the other fielders also knew that the ball is going to come to them and one of them has the ball in his hands with confidence.

Please send me your feed back.

    Bob,

Do me a favor and relay this message to your top management officials. I wish this message get accross to President of Pakistan.

    —————————————-

    Dear Mr. President & Excellencies,

I am keen follower of crikcet and at the same time proud Pakistani. Whenever Pakistan has produced a positive result on any ground it has given us energy and supported us in our endeavour to fight for more victory. Those people who bring us good result are certainly to be appreciated we call them “our Heros”. At the same time, I dont consider fame should become on the expense of portaying negative image of Pakistan or its people in anyway. And if that negative image is due to the action of so called “Heros” then for the sake of displine, an immediate action without a warning should be taken to sack that “Hero” for rest of this life along with all his contributions. My commentary here is about Shoaib Akhtar who has been a point of contention for so long. It is apparent that his actions have proven him the rudest ever as a sportsmen which is certainly beyond the limits and he himself is now a reason for portaying negative image for Pakistan and its People. It is quite evident that his actions have proven that he lacks patience, team work ethics and humbleness which are quite crucial and is expected out of a world-class player. He certainly do not believe it from deepest of his heart that there are better crickets then him in this world yet they do not carry disgusting attitude like him. He should learn from Mohammad Yousuf, Inzamam, Razzaq, Afridi and many. We do not want us to be called rude and a supporter of those heros who have caused a serious damage to morals of a good Pakistan and its people. I personally believe that if a team member becomes a reason for bringing friction in a team or vioaltes moral ethics and discipline – He should be immediately sacked with all his contributions. We do not want to win a game while loose the debate of morals in front of the entire world and its disciplined society. It is now about team for you as leaders, managers, leaders and top officials to focus on integrity of Pakistan, its respect and its ideology. You will recently fine Mr Shoaib Akhtar not fit for representing himself for Pakistan. We would welcome a defeat but would never ever want him to play for us. I would like to make a point Mr. President, if this action is not taken in the interest of integrity of Pakistan, this will seriously effect rest of Pakistan team and would be a serious blow to disciplinary rules which are always priority for successful nations.
    Sincerely,

    A Pakistani.

Ok Pakistan has made a couple of mistakes by not including Azhar Mahmood, Mushtaq Ahmed, and Yasir Hameed in the 15 going to the world cup and by not giving a chance or considering some young players playing in Pakistan who have performed really well on the domestic level by giving them a chance to prove themselves on the international stage, but nothing can be done about that now… its tough luck for us, but what we can do is work out a combination which can work for us with the players who have been sent off to play.

With Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammed Asif, and Danish Kaneria all of whom are match winners and with the addition of Umar Gul in the team there is no problem at all in the bowling department giving that these players are injury free and able to actually play in the World Cup.

The major problem however lies in the batting and the tendency of Pakistan to collapse, and this collapse is normally triggered off when both of the opening batsman fail! So we need to work out a opening combination which will work… then the middle order which is probably near the best in the world with Inzamam Ul Haq, Mohammed Yousaf, and Younis Khan.

So the batting lineup which I have come out with which could be adjusted depending on the match situations eg) If Pakistan are 200-1 after 40 overs then Afridi should be sent in instead of a more defensive player…. but the ideal lineup against a top team is:

Imran Nazir/Mohammed Hafeez (depending on who is performing out of the 2)
    Younis Khan
    Mohammed Yousaf
    Inzamam Ul Haq
    Shoaib Malik
    Kamran Akmal
Shahid Afridi/Abdul Razzaq (depending on who is performing out of the 2)
    Danish Kaneria
    Umar Gul
    Shoaib Akhtar
    Mohammed Asif

This lineup gives Imran Nazir and Hafeez competition and another reason to perform well so they are selected in the team… and knowing Pakistan there is no great opening batsman opening the inning like Saeed Anwar was so why not make Younis Khan opener as he is normally playing like a opener anyway because one of the openers gets out early and he is a good player who could give a could foundation to build on.
The lineup also has Afridi and Razzaq in competition for the same spot which will make them perform if both are performing and someone else isn’t for example Shoaib Malik or Danish replace him so there is always a competing place and this will give the drive for the players to perform. Razzaq seems like he thinks his place is semented in the team so he isn’t trying hard give him something to work for!!!
In matches against the easier teams to prevent injury Ifthikar Anjum should be played instead of Akhtar or Gul giving these 2 a smaller workload.

My lineup has also got all the best bowlers in the world giving that these guys stay fit inshallah with Akhtar and Asif opening and if Asif is bowling tightly he can even bowl through his overs, then Gul and Kaneria and Afridi/Razzaq/Malik/Hafeez bowling through the middle of the innings then at the end (last 10-12 overs or when a wicket is needed) with Akhtar and one of the other bowlers who have bowled well.

    Hello Bob,

I just have this suggestion which I have been wanting to share with you and see what you think of it.

    Suggestion:

Why can’t we play Younis Khan as a wicketkeeper batsman for the world cup; considering that he can do a relatively good job at it? Not to mention, the in effectiveness of Kamran Akmal with the bat and wicket keeping to an extent in the recent past.

This will certainly give us the freedom to include another authentic batsman in the line up; knowing that Pakistani team is prone to batting collapses !

I ‘d really appreciate your feedback on it.

Thank you and best of luck for the world cup !

Ijaz Ahmed is still around at the age of 38 playing for sialkot i cant belive it!…… he made a blistering 68 for them and top scored for there team, hes still got his old form and experience with him and I think were in for a winner. Im sure he would be more then happy to play for Pakistan.
Mushtaq Ahmed I DON’T KNOW why the hell he isn’t in the team he is the best spinner in the world at the moment taking over 100 wickets for Sussex in 2 seasons in a row is amazing.
My dream PAK team for the year 2007 would be:

    1) Kamran Akmal
    2) Younis Khan
    3) Mohammed Yousaf
    4) Inzamam Ul Haq
    5) Ijaz Ahmed
    6) Shahid Afridi
    7) Abdul Razzaq
    8) Mushtaq Ahmed
    9) Shoaib Akhtar
    10) Umar Gul
    11) Mohammed Asif

    4 World Class Batsmen
    1 Wicket keeping Batsman
    2 World Class Allrounders
    4 World Class Bowlers
This team is the best in the world!

    Hi Bob,

Heard some bad news today that Asif nd Shoaib are out of the world cup… I was expecting Asif to still be in even if Shoaib wasnt oh well nothing can be done now but i still we got it in the bowling department to win the world cup so lets think positivly!!!! Rana Naved is a world class bowler on his day we saw him against the West Indies, Sami has the pace, Gul has been the spearhead of the pakistan atack for the last year or so and we know what hes capable of and Danish is a world class spinner. For the 1st ODI against West Indies i think we should try this lineup as Afridi is going to be out…..

    Imran Nazir
    Younis Khan
    Mohammed Yousaf
    Inzamam Ul Haq
    Shoaib Malik
    Kamran Akmal
    Azhar Mahmood
    Naved Ul Hassan
    Mohammed Sami
    Danish Kaneria
    Umar Gul

With Younis opening the batting it shifts Yousaf and Inzi up the order which will be vital in the world cup we will need our leading batsman lead from up front.

The New ball pair should be Sami and Gul…. with Azhar Mahmood, Danish, and Malik bowling the majority of the middle overs and rana naved chipping in a cuple of overs here and there. But it is vital that we save Rana Naved for the last 10 overs were he can bowl really well, keep the runs down and also pick up wickets

I would like the side for the Match agianst West Indies a little different because I think Imran nazir and Rana Naveed are not in form right now.

    Mohammad Hafeez
    Younis Khan
    Mohammed Yousaf
    Inzamam Ul Haq
    Shoaib Malik
    Kamran Akmal
    Azhar Mahmood
    Rao Iftikhar Anjum
    Mohammed Sami
    Danish Kaneria
    Umar Gul

Playing Imran Nazir and not playing Azhar Mahmood in the first world cup match against westindies was a fatal mistake.

What a devestated and un professional performance by
Imran Nazir, Hafeez, younus, yousuf and the captain Inzy.

The slow Partnership and lazy running between wicket between Inzy and yousuf caused pakistan their first match. Alas……………….

    Hey Bob,

We messed up abit against west indies but nvm, we can fiddle around with the order abit for the 2nd match against which should be an easy match against ireland. But against Zimbabwe i would reccomend you try this lineup….

    Mohammed Hafeez
    Younis Khan
    Mohammed Yousaf
    Inzamam Ul Haq
    Shoaib Malik
    Shahid Afridi
    Kamran Akmal
    Azhar Mahmood
    Mohammed Sami
    Iftikhar Anjum
    Umar Gul

Opening the bowling would ideally be Sami and Gul, then Anjum, Azhar, Hafeez, Afridi, and Malik can bowl through the middle overs and finish with abit of Sami, Azhar, Hafeez, and Gul in the last 10.
But we must keep it tight in the last 10 overs!!! and the job of Gul and Sami would ideally be to get wickets, and the job of Anjum and Hafeez to keep it tight and give away minimal runs even if he cant get wickets keep patient they will come.

In the batting department i think we should firstly make sure and get it staright with the players not to play stupid shots like Younis Khan and Mohammed Yousaf did whcih cost them their wickets, and Yousaf and Inzi would of worked out that they were better off scoring at a higher rate then they did against West Indies.
The aim for Hafeez and Younis would ideally be to keep there wickets till the 15th over even if we have only 50 runs on the board and havent lost a wicket in the 1st 15 overs runs will come as the ball gets older.
Then the aim for Yousaf and Inzi will to keep the scorecard ticking with the singles and a cuple of boundries but no big risks untill they reach about the 35th over when they can afford to start firing at the bowling and can afford to loose there wicket if they do by the time they shud have half centuries to there names.
Then with Akmal,Afridi,Malik,Mahmood still to come we can fire at the bowling in the last 10 and if we have wickets in hand can try and add 100 in the last 10 overs (if we are batting first)
If were chasing a score it would be helpfull if Younis and Hafeez stayed in and didnt loose there wiket for 15 overs then with the likes of Inzi,Yousaf and Malik to come they could try and finish it off.

We also need to keep on our toes and keep our fielding tight and also not drop catches!!!

    Hi Bob

Ireland is continously performing well and we shouldn’t take it easy against them. There performance against Zimbabwe and South Africa showed that they have capibilities to do another upset.

Recommending Team and batting oder against Ireland.

    Mohammed Hafeez
    Younis Khan
    Inzamam Ul Haq
    Mohammed Yousaf
    Shoaib Malik
    Azhar Mahmood
    Kamran Akmal
    Mohammed Sami
    Iftikhar Anjum
    Umar Gul
    Danish Kaneria
