Live discussion: England v Australia, Champions Trophy

By Will 2 years ago, mid-October Leave a comment on this post

So then, a mere 32 days before the first Test at Brisbane and these two sides - both not at their best - face eachother in the middle of India. As Shane Warne recently pointed out on his site, the conditions in India - muggy, slow pitches and all - don't mirror in any way those in Australia. Little can be taken from the result of this match - or can it?

I'm posting this on Friday as no doubt I'll fail to wake up in time to watch the match - I don't have Sky, either, so I might be making an early-morning trip to the pub. With a hangover. The omens are not good for me, let alone England.

So, let's get some discussion going. Here's the Cricinfo live scorecard. Get chatting!

Morning Will, morning everyone. Got up surprised to learn that England haven’t lost a wicket yet. And Martyn grasses an absolute sitter. What’s going on here?

How could this be a side that has won about 10% of recent ODIs. They’re far better than that. They are doing a perfect job of blunting an already blunt Aussie attack - no thanks to Martyn who hasn’t made things any easier!

McGrath struggling too. No-one should write him off yet but it won’t be long. It would be a shame to see his form degenerate now - he deserves to go out in style.

They’ll probably score 250 then bowl like drains, Stu. Aus will coast home in 40 overs for the loss of three. They did much the same during the series against Sri Lanka.

Morning all. Overslept massively. What’s the verdict then? No TV here :(

    And how was Bell’s knock?

Confident bunch aren’t we! I think the opposite :-) They’ll make 250 odd and our middle order will collapse. ICC Trophy has not been a happy hunting ground for us.

And there goes Mr Strauss! I wasn’t expecting all that much from the Aussies, especially given the start they had. But their second tier of players are fighting back. Go the Queenslanders of Mitchell, Watson, and Symonds!!

Still, this match could definitely go either way. Which side will play the tougher cricket?

England’s plan to get Shane Watson picked for the Ashes by making him look unplayable seems to be working. Good work lads.

As usual middle order batting collapse has put them in a precarious position of 126/5 and unless the bottom half does some miracle they might as well get more rest than they would have wished before the Ashes.

Still wondering why England only win 10% of their ODI’s Stu?

Its 136/7 now with Dalrymple & Read both back in the pavillion. Another low scoring and boring match on the cards

    It’s only a meaningless ODI…. ;-(

Why does Flintoff come out at four when Pietersen came in at three - that suggests rather naive thinking.

    Plus’s so far…

    Bell’s knock
    McGrath getting caned early on
    er… that’s it.

This is quite depressing - Mahmood goes now - but has anyone noticed how much Michael Yardy looks like Major Charles Ingram..

COLLAPSE. Noun. Cricketing term. Where several batsmen get out in quick succession for low scores. Usually applied to England middle order. Usage: oh, bloody hell, England have collapsed from 83/0 to 151/9.

170 for a win….. Australia might look at finishing the game in 25 overs to make sure they dont miss a SF spot on net run rate.

Hmmmm . . . I’m thinking Colly to go in 3 to stop the collapses and save him from being stranded by his so-called mates in the middle. As far as I’m concerned Pieterson and Flintoff have a lot to prove before they go to Australia. As for that Read guy - haven’t heard anyone crowing recently about how much better he is than Jones.

Ramps would have been a better choice than Yardy both for Champions Trophy and Ashes.

Looks like Ausssies too want more rest for Ashes…as they too trying their best not too qualify for Semis…
    34/3 - Mohmood picks up Gilchrist & Ponting…Anderson accounts for Shane Watson…

Martyn celebrates his birthday with a stylish 78 which ensured victory for Australia and its England who will be waiting in Australia for the Ashes.

Fine, right, let’s all leave our analysis here with Doctor Luke and be done with it, dammit.

The whole world knows that we are damn useless at one-dayers (though -I did have hope after our first 8 overs)

Bring on the Tests for goodness sake. Only then will we see what these buggers are made of.
