Come on Aussie, come on

Slick left a comment which was rather curious:
Its been a long time commin’
To silence all that drummin’
To show them that it wasn’t just a dreamThey’ve beaten all the rest you know
And proven they’re the best you know
The greatest team to wear the baggy greenPigeon’s pounding down like a machine
Dizzy’s scarin’ batsmen – lookin’ mean
Gilly’s gettin’ wickets
Punter’s clearin’ pickets
And Warney’s just the best we’ve ever seenCome on Aussie, come on, come on
Come on Aussie, come onNight or day, they’re out to make us proud
To keep our flags a-wavin’ in the crowd
Even gettin’ zeroes
They’ll always be our heroes
And keep us singin’ come on just as loudCome on Aussie, come on, come on
Come on Aussie, come on, come on
Come on Aussie, come on, come on
Come on Aussie, come onSee ‘em sprayin’ leather at the bat
Sweetly crackin’ winners through the gap
They’re not just gettin’ runs
They’re out there smashin’ tons
Spinnin’ big time records back to backCome on Aussie, come on, come on
Come on Aussie, come onAll summer we’ll go floodin’ through the gates
To try and get a look at cricket’s greats
No matter what the season
We always have a reason
To shout out come on Aussie with our matesCome on Aussie, come on, come on
Come on Aussie, come on, come on
Come on Aussie, come on, come on
Come on Aussie, come on
Is this a well-known tune or a new one? I know the “Come on Aussie, come on” line but the rest seems new to me

It’s just an update (new nicknames inserted) of the old song of the same name. it’s been around for some time now.

These are the lyrics of a cover version of the advertising jingle from the 1970’s. This version was released last year by Shannon Noll (an Australian Idol contestant). I believe that it reached number 2 on the ‘charts’.
The original was penned by the advertising firm Mojo, to publcise a mid-1970’s Ashes series. The original lyrics, which I can’t quite remember, were peppered with references to Lillee, Thomson, Marsh, Chappell etc.
Certainly the chorus has become a treasured cultural icon here in Australia.

Whoever wrote the lyrics shouldn’t apply for that editor’s job at Reader’s Digest.

I knew I’d find the original if I looked hard enough!
You’ve been training all the winter
And there’s not a team that’s fitter
And that’s the way it’s got to be
‘Cause you’re up against the best you know
This is SuperTest you know
And you’ve got to beat the best the world has seen
Lillee’s pounding down like a machine
Pascoe’s making divots in the green
Marshy’s taking wickets
Hookesy’s clearing pickets
And the Chappells’ eyes have got that killer gleam
Mr Walker’s playing havoc with the bats
Redpath it’s good to see you back
Lairdie’s making runs
Dougie’s chewing gum
And Gilmour’s wielding willow like an axe
Come on Aussie Come on Come on
Come on Aussie Come on (Repeat)
Deathless Verse by mojo. Looks like World Series Cricket c. 1977

Yep – it was the promotion for WSC in ‘77. I hate to give too much away but I could’ve recited those lyircs without having to look them up…I was an impressionable young chap in those days!! (I even had the single!…the original not Shannon Noel’s re-hack…)
There was also a West Indian “counter” to this – I think it was the B Side, called “WIndies at the wicket…”……master men of cricket… but I do go on…

Does anyone remember the Windies doing an ad for Brut 33 aftershave at around the same time? …
Spend all day in burning sun,
Aussie pacemen not much fun
Batsman wear Brut 33
He hit sixes 1, 2, 3
or something like that. There was a second verse about the bowlers that ended with “Batsman LBW”.
Ahh memories …
