RIP Australian cricket

There was a story doing the rounds on September 12 that Marstons, the English brewery and now official “drink of England,” had run some adverts in the Australian press cheekily reminding them of losing the Ashes 12 months ago. I emailed the marketing manager who sent me the PDFs which are below for your enjoyment (or annoyance, if you’re Australian)

My boss has done a few lines on this in his The Week That Was for Monday. And Marstons, bless’em, have even given us a whole stack of beer to give away during the Ashes as competition prizes. So stay tuned.

Ha, quite. It’s just amazing (to me) that The Age and co would agree to run such an advert clearly designed to piss Australians off! I honestly can’t see (m)any English papers agreeing to do such a thing

There are other ads like these in other Australian newspapers, one for each city (I assume to get the message across to everyone). Radio stations on Tuesday morning were discussing them saying it was “a travesty…childish ploy by the English”
Heh, jokes about cricket don’t go down to well here.

Interesting ad - shame about the lack of originality. Cricket is still very much below the radar at the moment, as evidenced by the comparitive coverage given to local soccer (football), itself not much of an attraction, and the ODI series on that page.

Unforunate timing given that the Ashes urn itself will be touring Australia this winter, for the first time…
