I had read about it on Cricinfo but didn’t know what it was about. Ten years seems a bit harsh. What next? Will you get a two year international ban for giving an abusive spectator the finger?

Punishment needs to fit the crime. How long should you spend on the sidelines for tampering with the ball or bringing the game into disrepute rather than just bringing yourself into disrepute?

I’m not condoning his actions but how long did Eric Cantona spend on the sidelines after assaulting a spectator?

I read that he threw a cricket ball in the crowd or something like that. But if the incident on video is the only thing that happened, it seems that the punishment is rather harsh for a rather mild incident. I remember that in a match at Toronto, Inzamam grabbed a bat that materialized out of nowhere, and went into the crowd after an abusive spectator. Vermeulan, as far as I can see didn’t step off the field, and the only one who got a knock or two was him. And I am pretty sure that the spectator actions were above the board either - there must have been some abuse. He neither elbowed nor headbutt anyone, so 10 years seems raher over the top :-) Strange that noone ever reprimands the spectators; people almost seem to feel like its their birthright to abuse the players.

To be honest… we don’t know the full story about what was said/done.

Still think 10years is very harsh and agree with Rajeevs point “people almost seem to feel like its their birthright to abuse the players.”

    Mark Vermeulan penalty…

I read yesterday that new evidence hand emerged in Marks case and his penalty had been downgraded to 3 years. That to me is a much more appropriate penalty than the 10 years one. The penalty was downgraded as new video footage shows that a member of th…
