I’m still chuckling over all the “pontingification” surrounding the dissent rap against the Aussie skipper for disputing a Wide call made by new kid on the block Asad Rauf. Players will always seek to test the mettle of new umpires, to suss out how strong they are, how easily rattled into poor decision making. I nearly split my sides when I read Cricket Australia intoning that they wouldn’t accept such action, that Ricky had been a brave boy to make such a public apology, that the Spirit of Cricket (which specifically condemns abuse of players by players, AKA sledging) must be upheld, etc. etc.
Trouble with cricket today: too many lawyers, too many career committee-men, and too many PR gurus spinning their lines-to-take. And folk say that spinners are a dying breed.
