Live discussion: England v Pakistan, 3rd ODI, Rose Bowl

By Emma 2 years ago, at the start of September Leave a comment on this post

So, another one-day match. This time, England are at the Rose Bowl and have lost the toss. Pakistan have put them in to bat, and are unchanged. Mahmood has come in for Gough, so it looks like those Onions one-liners will have to be shelved for this game.

As usual, cricinfo will provide ball-by-ball commentary.

Well, here we go. If you can leave a comment before we lose a wicket, I’ll be impressed. In fact, there goes one now.

Just seeing the ball that Ian Bell just had fired at him, reminds me of some of the reasons I’m glad to be a female cricketer.

Ah Emma, don’t be a bunny. Use one of the old tricks and ask for the sight screen to be moved. Know this one? “Where to then, miss?” “Between him and me!”

Heh - I didn’t know that one. And I certainly wouldn’t want to face this bowling. But I was referring to the shot Mr Strauss played at his no. 3’s box ;-)

Oh missed that, sorry Emma. On the subject though, one male cricketer was once brave enough to ask Rachel Heyhoe Flint if women wore a box. (I love this woman!) Calmly she replied, “No, I prefer a man-hole cover!”

I was going to laugh, but then Ian Bell got out. Argh! So I’m going to limit myself to wry smile whilst I watch Shoaib Akhtar scare the hell out of our lower order.

Come back to Berkswell, Shoaib, we miss you. I’m sure Pakistan wouldn’t mind…

Not a bad total. Definitely an improvement over recent performances. Can the bowling back it up though?

Not a bad total. It’ll mean nowt if Mahmood goes for 16 an over, though.

Dalrymple and Read are World Cup Shoo-Ins, no doubt. With Tresco’s rather abysmal form at the moment, I’m be tempted to give Alistair Cook a spell. His one-day form is excellent, and he’d act as a good anchor for the more swashbuckling Strauss that seems to have emerged of late.

Good to see Collingwood back in ODI form. Three wickets as well please, Colly.

Oooo, that one must have been close from Lewis. Lots of inside edges today as well.

Please explain! What on earth is that quote on cricinfo refering to, quoting Nasser saying Shoaib is silly to be caught having a go at the ball? What’s going on? I missed a load of play having tea with my kiddies.

There was footage of Shoaib seemeing to swipe a thumb/thumbnail beside the quarter seam. No sign that it affected the ball in any way and no notice from the umpires that they saw anything suspicious. But according to Bumble, to do anything to the seam, even remove dirt from it, you are supposed to do it supervised by the umpire. That’s all we know for now.

Thanks, Emma. I’m still pretending that I am not watching this match. It’s getting too close for comfort. I’m off to wash up now. When I do this, England lose a wicket … will it work the other way?

Apparently, though, not early enough I don’t think. And I was so looking forward to having a competitive game at Edgbaston…

That’s it then. Two down and two to play.

Looks like the rest of the country gave up, and only you and me bothered, Emma.

Oh well, it looked like a good try but I’m desperately disappointed in Tresco and Pietersen. I’ll leave the analysis of KP to those more qualified that I but I still believe a few players have deserved a smack on head.

Just to think, we went through years when England were a bad Test side - it improved. But what about the one-day side. Oh Gods, help us. Why can’t England do it it one-dayers????

I try to keep a level head with regards to Flintoff, but I’m certain that if he’d been in the side in place of Clarke, we’d have won that, with ball if not bat.

Stuart Broad can bowl well at the death! Teach him an inswinging yorker, and we can finally hand Goughie the carriage clock.

That was really rather a good match, regardless of who won. Competitive, and came down almost to the wire (that second-last Clarke over buggered things).

I’m here too ! Did anyone see the alleged Shoab incident with the ball ? I don’t have a TV so missed it, but heard it mentioned on TMS and cricinfo are posting this…

    http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/engvpak/content/current/story/258740.html

Surely it’s unlikely to be true given the current circs.

Unlikely, Miles, but…it looked pretty damned dodgy if you ask me. Inconclusive evidence but - what on earth was he thinking? Acc/to my boss bowlers aren’t allowed to remove any dirt or grass from the seam, as that constitutes altering the condition of the ball. He wasn’t 100% sure though but, regardless…pretty daft thing to be doing given the climate.

Incidently Will, top marks for describing Yousuf as being “hamstrung by his hamstring” in your bulletin. Made me giggle.
