Well played, old man

My Dad would’ve been 64 today. I doubt he’d have believed England winning the Ashes last year, but he certainly wouldn’t have been surprised at England’s current one-day form.

Cheers, old man.

A shame then, that your Dad didn’t get to see the Ashes win. How long has he been gone?

I rang up my Dad all through last year’s Ashes to talk it over with him, not knowing that he was actually dying at the time. I was passionately backing England and found it strange he supported Australia, considering the intense trans-Tasman rivalry in sport. “Us colonials have to stick together,” he said to me. “But England are the underdogs,” I said. “Australia have been rubbing their nose in the dirt for years!”

But he wasn’t to be moved. Maybe it was some hangover from the war when Churchill refused to let the Kiwi troops come home to defend NZ when Japan started to threaten…

My Dad is still a wonderfully young 67 years and gives me the benefit - every match - of his wisdom. And I love it. Lose a wicket - call Dad. He reminds me often of seeing Keith Miller play and I grit my teeth in envy every time. Now I am invovled in the game myself, I love the feedback from my Dad. Sorry for your loss, Will.

It sucks that he’s not here so that you can celebrate it with him, my thoughts are with you. All the best people have birthdays today…

Didn’t mean to turn this into a tribute post! He’s been long gone, seven or so years I think. Thanks anyway. I’d raise a glass were it not for the double-hangover I’m suffering from
