Live discussion: England v Pakistan, 1st ODI, Cardiff

By Will 2 years ago, at the end of August Leave a comment on this post

So then, the first one-day between England and Pakistan gets underway today. England began the second half of their one-day season in dispiriting style at Bristol on Tuesday, in a Twenty20. Pakistan ruthlessly brushed them aside. If the 5-0 drubbing Sri Lanka inflicted on them was painful, the next 10 days could be worse. Pakistan are an outstanding one-day side - and they know it.

What to do? Well we get the opportunity to watch Stuart Broad bowl ten overs, and that will be fascinating to see how he copes. Cue the “broad shoulders” pun come Thursday morning whether he does or not…

I’ll be on ball-by-ball for Cricinfo, so keep an eye on the scorecard, the bulletin and so forth…and leave your comments here as the game progresses.

Clarke in for Yardy - which makes sense considering Pietersen can bowl spin, but a shame considering he played well in the the Twenty20.

Back to the Test opening pair again. Again, I’d like to have seen Bell given a 50 over outing in the number 2 slot, but Strauss has the marginally higher strike rate. Captain’s innings on the cards, I hope.

I shudder to think what might happen if Pietersen bowled to Afridi in the mood he was in on Monday. If he does bowl, I hope I’m wrong.

Hopefully that bit of reverse psychology might have the opposite effect of hoping Strauss would play a captain’s innings.

At least Bell gets a potential 46 over outing…

One day, Coalster, I’ll learn to keep my mouth shut.

I’m not convinced they’ll call on Pietersen, but the option’s there, just as Bell is a reasonable medium pacer. Strauss doesn’t seem to like bowling him, though, which I suppose is fair enough with Collingwood in your side. Having two spinners is important in Twenty20 in a way it doesn’t seem to be in other forms of the game.

And there goes Tresco, departing with a Beatle’s ditty to play him out. Let’s hope this part of Pietersen’s game goes better than it did at Bristol.

As of over 13, Vic Marks on TMS says 200 would be competitive.

Only if England were playing England I would have thought…

    Groan. Pietersen.

Surely, if England were playing England, the competative total would be lower than that…

“24.4 Shahid Afridi to Collingwood, OUT, drifting into Collingwood who comes forward, the ball turns enough and raps him on the pad and Afridi roars an appeal. That’s about as plum as a rather large plum from a big plum tree in Plumshire ”

Is that you, Will? I’m pretty sure it is.

I must say, the ball-by-ball descriptions could stand some livening up. Nice work.

Sigh. It’s all Nasser’s fault - he said Bell’d make a century. The Warwickshire part of me is going to go into bereavement for a bit.

Beautiful ball from Akhtar to take Dalrymple, and to give him his 200th ODI wicket.

167-7 after 42. Lame lame lame.

Mind you Bell’s having a hell of a run of form. I was always a bit anti-Bell, but I take it all back.

Thankfully, when commenting, I don’t have to remove my inherent bias when it comes to Ian Bell. Have always thought he should play in both forms of the game.

Lame is the word though. Stuart Broad, your time is now…

Pakistan must think it’s Christmas. They’ve just got five wickets for seven runs in five overs (that’s according to the real enemy - the BBC website live text team).

Oh, now that’s a nice comeback to those wides by Broad. First wicket in his first over. Not much more you can ask.

I hope they aren’t going to keep muttering about the rain. I have every sympathy, my first outdoor game being a rather sodden affair, but you can’t allow yourself to get distracted.

Pakistan is simply unlucky in this series. Whenever they are in a position to win, something happens :(

ok now play has stopped, i agree its unfair for england to carry on playing. conditions are terrible but no doubt Pakistan hav outplayed them in most aspects of the game.

Broad is a very good prospect for England. he bowls alot like Asif (the ball that nips back in can be a handful).

And Emma - I can assure you its not the English side that will be muttering about the rain.

Pakistan have a very strong ODI side. That said, the way England’s playing right now, they couldn’t win an ODI against a drunk Irish side.

Well, out of that sorry exercise, I was entertained watching the young’un (Broad) and the oldie (Gough) and I’m starting to have doubts about Read.
