Viv Richards’s 189* on TV

By Will 2 years ago, at the end of August Leave a comment on this post

Thanks to Arlo, splendid fellow of Test Match Special fame, it appears King Viv’s monstrous 189 will be on t’telly on Sunday:

If you have satellite or cable, tell the other half that you’re busy on Sunday. From 11am until 7pm, ESPN Classics are showing highlights of the entire Test series plus the Texaco Trophy (Viv Richards 189 not out, remember?).

Greenidge’s double hundreds, Malcolm Marshall breaking his hand and still hitting Paul Allott for four, Allott taking 6 wickets in an innings, Joel Garner steaming in, Andy Lloyd breaking his arm. I was only 11 at the time, but watching it, it seemed like, well to be honest, 22 years ago.

I don’t have Sky…I have the poor man’s version, known as Freeview - whose reception is about as good as Darrell Hair walking into the Pakistan dressing room with a beaming smile. But if you do, you can watch it.

Been watching the England-West Indies series on ESPN for the last few weeks - they’ve shown highlights of most Test days from ‘73, ‘76 and ‘84 and they’ve been bloody brilliant.

Most interesting aspects include the incredible number of pitch invasions, Boycott compulsively hooking Keith Boyce and getting out at Lord’s in ‘73 - the type of shot that would have him chuntering his head off today. 1984 reminded me what an incredible cricketer Ian Botham was - his batting was a bit iffy by then (and against that attack who wouldn’t be?) but his bowling and slip catching was magnificent throughout the series. Also what an amazing collection of talent that WI side was - with Marshall standing out. For anyone who’s to young to remember Marshall he had all the pace of Shoaib or Lee with the ability to swing it both ways, think batsmen out and the latitude to bowl huge numbers of vicious short balls. A bit of a handful.

Talking of pitch invasions, I remember being at the Oval in 1973 (my first ever Test Match) There was a big pitch invasion when Clive Lloyd got to 99, and then another one a minute or so later when he got to 100.

I was also taken to Lords in the same year when Sobers, on his last tour, got 150. When he was out, he was applauded all the way to the pavilion, and then the applause just carried on for ages, all the time the new batsman (Vanburn Holder?) was making his way to the middle!

The 84 side was the best West Indies side I’ve seen - only missing piece was a decent spinner, but they hardly needed one! Not only did Marshall hit Allot for four with a broken wrist, but he also picked up a load of wickets bowling with a plaster cast on his left hand - awesome stuff.

That summer, I think England were lucky to only lose 5-0….
