The fourth day from The Oval. Chat away, if any of you wish. England have their backs against’t'wall

From what I can vaguely make out, we can’t really afford to lose more than one wicket a session unless we want to put a LOAD of trust in the tail. So, it would seem Alastair Cook is trying to kill me. How feline is his life count?

For those that don’t have Sky and have been listening to this debacle over ball tampering, the visual suggestion from where Hi-Motion showed Darryl Hair pointing on the old ball is that a blanched patch just to the side of the seam had been scratched at. Interesting situation…

cricinfo has “The quarter seam seems to have been raised” so jamming a fingernail to make the seam bigger is what they are implying.

Hi all, can any of you provide more info on the swapped ball/ 5 penalty incident? TMS seem to presume ball-tampering.

    Thanks, Emma!

ahhhh sh*oo*t KP, why did you chase the wide? Why, oh, why?

Here comes the most stressful part of my day - watching Ian Bell at the crease. Not that he isn’t a good batsman to watch - it’s just so nervewracking! Lost one wicket more than I reckon we can afford timewise. Pietersen - grr! Not much to be done about him, though. Plays how he plays.

Shortly after the incident, there were shots of a less than amused looking Bob Woolmer trying to replicate the effect on another ball. Don’t think he’ll be able to change the effect, though. I’m more than happy to watch a ball that shows more chance of hitting the wicket dead than reversing. But only ten more overs :(

Holy cow! It’s all kicked off now! Pakistan look like they’re refusing to come out after tea.

No-one has a scooby doo what’s going on!

Hmm. It’s all starting to get a bit messy.

Whilst this is pretty shocking for cricket, I can’t help feeling this controversy is quite exciting. Apart from the fact that the result of the match is now basically a non-event - this is much bigger.

Either Daryl Hair is gonna get fired, or he’s going to have produce some evidence and finger someone for the tampering.

    Crikey. I need more beer!

This is all. Very. Odd. Eh up, umpires heading out again…

Ah. Except, Kamran Akmal was just sent out (obviously) sat down, flicked at a paper, and went back in. Whilst Ian Bell and Paul Collingwood are just standing on the square going ‘eh?’

Bails are off… Is that the match forfeit?

    What a ridiculous farce.

And covers. Well, there’s nothing else there, really, is there. Where’re the crowd announcements?

This is incredible. Pakistan have refused to come out after tea. It looks like they’re forfeiting.

    No-one’s saying anything!

I just hope all the England team and management have the good sense to keep well out of it. Leave it between the Pakistanis and the umpires.

Exactly, Harry. This isn’t something the team want to get embroiled in.

Well, it’s starting to look like everyone except England want to boycott something. Both Bell and Collingwood are stood with helmets on, and now the umpires are refusing to come out. And Pakistan are back off.

And Nasser Hussain has noted that even if we were to get more play, chance is we’d be straight back off for the light. The people at the Oval today may well be viewing an historic day of cricket - though, not in a good way.

Well play is over for the day. England should be pretty happy with their position (if the match is to continue!), its a just a massive shame about events this afternoon.
