This is becoming more than slightly disheartening. Our bowling is just so poor. We’ve been unlucky on a couple of close lbw calls… but Harmison is looking so out of form, and Hoggard looked much better yesterday evening than today. What I wouldn’t do for a burst of Simon Jones or Freddie right now…

The second day from The Oval. A fairly disasterous day for England yesterday, and darn spiffing one for Pakistan - in particular, and thanks most to Mohammad Asif who bowled quite excellently.
What will the second day hold? Chat away

I couldn’t agree more, Emma.

You know, if someone told me “England is throwing the match”, it would make more sense…but I can’t believe the pitch is THAT much better for them to bat on than it was for us. I wonder if Pakistan will still be batting on Sunday when I go…unless, of course, Pakistan win by an innings and 275 runs - in which case, I can sleep in.

Fletcher was openly critical of our batting yesterday. It’s the Oval, we should be doing better. I’m consoling myself with county cricket - come on you Bears!
Which, considering how Warwickshire have (not) performed this season, is an irony in itself. Maybe having to work tomorrow wont be a bad thing…

Well said TMS! Pratt, where are you when your country needs you?
I’m consoling myself with the thought of a good game tomorrow. Not the one at the Oval, but ours in the Rheinaue. It’s gonna be great - I’m playing! Compared to me, Monty is a bloody genius in the field. You get the idea ![]()

Hampshire have to follow on - not all is wrong with the world. And we’ve - mon dieu - we’ve got another wicket. I was under the impression we were going to finish the day some 300 behind with only the one extra wicket to show for it. Not that this is presently much better. Still - another hour or so for improvement…
Good luck for your game tomorrow Wraye - and to be fair to Monty, he isn’t *that* bad. Was quite a sharp chance for someone who hasn’t had the ball fly anywhere near him all test.

By all accounts it would have been a difficult catch to take anyway, bless him. It’s not easy to see at the Oval either.
I missed a couple last week so best keep me old mouth shut. Mind you did take one good catch off an *inadvertent* full toss last week. Batsman thrashed it to hell but fortunately straight up instead of past cover and it plopped down into my greasy little paws. Pure joy. Absolute bliss. Whoo! I did a Monty, I confess.

Sky have now gone to reshowing Thursday’s lowlights so I’m relying on TMS for more information. Warwickshire seem to have given up for the day too, so I’m going to have to find other kind of amusement. TMS, it seems, are desperate to find something to talk about…

Ah! Another Bears fan! Youuuuuuuuuu Beeaaaaars! (that’s so irritating isn’t it?) I prefer, “I’d rather be a Bear than a Pear”. I’ve almost been banned from going by some fellow members because I’ve only seen them win one game all season!
August 18th, 2006 at 6.19 pm
I’ve now seen them win three times this season, but I can’t admit to being a regularly attending member for County Championships - though I got narked off by some stewards on the gate who didn’t believe I was a member when I took some of the university girls to the Hampshire match. Admittedly, they just wanted to see Shane Warne… I tend to just follow championship via scorecard.
As for irritating chants, yeah, my Dad pulls it out occasionally when he wants to annoy me. Though, if we’re having a late season surge and manage to avoid relegation in these last two competitions, he can do it as much as he likes!
August 18th, 2006 at 6.25 pm
Have you had a Monty this summer? Hot stuff. TMS must be desperate!
Thanks for your “good luck” wishes, Emma. I’ll tonk a 4 just for you in gratitude for keeping me during the dire English play (great for Pakistan!) company on the CoU today. A great strike for womanhood - hopefully.
At least if I get out first ball, I can join KP in the Primary Club ![]()

I’m afraid you’ll have to do without my disconsolate moaning tomorrow - part time job calls and all that. As I said before, it looks like one of the better days to miss. Ashes last year were much worse. And in regards to the primary club - my personal batting record is hardly beautiful, but my ducks have taken at least 3 balls, to date
Sorry Will - it seems that in order to survive the second test, we had to swap subjects a little. Kudos for managing to stay on topic on your ball-to-ball commentary.

I’ve only made it to about 3 sessions of County Champs games this season. Two of those were when Hants were playing - and very impressive they were too. Went to all but 1 or 2 of the C&G games and all but one of the Twenty20 games at home. Been to a couple of the Pro40 games - last Sunday I turned up for an hour or so before it started raining again but at least I saw an impressive 50 off 46 balls from Moin Khan - one for the future there.
August 18th, 2006 at 7.21 pm
Moin Khan?
Sounds fammilliar….
I’m a Lancs fan, looks like it’ll be our year at last.
The youngsters have really done the team proud this year, Newby, Smith and Kyle Hogg have been fantastic and i’m glad we only have one overseas player.
August 18th, 2006 at 7.32 pm
Think you mean Moeen Ali? But yes, if we can keep hold of him he seems to be an excellent prospect. Worcester are trying to get their paws on him though. Daggett, James and Westwood all seem to be improving, too, and Anyon and Shantry have both had flashes of brilliance… well, for Warwickshire players.
My mother’s a Lancashire fan, so I have half an eye on them during the season - all three you’ve mentioned, Bowman, seem to be ones for the future. And your second string keeper was pretty good, too!

That has been about the most abject two days of England test cricket since the ashes of 2001. Lazy, complacent batting, abysmal bowling and an utter lack of energy. Let’s hope it’s classic dead rubber syndrome.
Does anyone know the latest on Jones? Any whispers on the county circuit?
If there is going to be no swing out in Oz then we might need to reconsider Hoggy - he had fairly limited success(with the exception of Hayden) last year. It was Fred and Jonesy that done the damage.
Let’s not even think about what might happen if Fred didn’t make it. Christ.
August 18th, 2006 at 11.01 pm
Can it get much worse than this?
(Or should I not ask that question?)
I know we’re all armchair pundits, but surely someone would have mentioned to Harmison and Mahmood that “er, hi chaps? Yeh, just so you know, you’re bowling too short. It’s rubbish and not getting any wickets, so do us a favour and bowl a bit fuller and a bit straighter. Thanks.”
? Simple this commentary lark.
August 18th, 2006 at 11.17 pm
Assuming you mean Simon Jones rather than Geraint (who seems to be performing fine, and made what might well have been a match-winning cameo against Leicestershire in the Pro40) then the news isn’t good. Not really realistic for the Ashes, might just about be fit for one of the middle/end tests, but wont have played cricket in almost a year. So, well, not good.
I’d be interested to know if a lot of Harmison’s problems come from a lack of Troy Cooley. Whilst Mahmood has been quite open in his praise of Kevin Shine, and I haven’t heard any commentators make any open remarks about him, Harmison was, well, damning with faint praise. But as a girl who struggles with line and length at the snail pace I bowl at… though I haven’t managed to hit second slip in a while, either. Not that they tend to give me a slip.
August 19th, 2006 at 12.23 am
Er… yeah, Moeen Ali, now I feel stupid! It’s been a long week. I’m off for a few days holiday now, and after today’s performance I think the first day or so will be spent lying down in a darkened room. ![]()
August 19th, 2006 at 3.39 am
Ha! you fair weather friends! Emma and I kept up the day on the Test (snooze, doze, grieve) and you lot chip in at the end with County stuff.
Harrumph!
Anyway, I’m a Leicestershire fan. Anyone for more T20? ![]()
August 19th, 2006 at 9.37 pm
Twenty20 Finals were amazing, Wraye. For the first time, the team I’ve been supporting from the start has won! I do have a soft spot for Leicestershire.
But on a final County Cricket note - the end of the Hampshire/Warwickshire game was amazing, even through watching a refreshing scorecard! If only the England game could have such an end. Neither of these teams has much hope of winning the County Championship nor chance of being relegated - Dead Rubber Syndrome doesn’t abound everywhere it seems…
