Leaving aside his personal shit, I’m beginning to like Warney more these days, for the reasons you put. And he was a great opponent last year — full of guts and humour and dramatics — and also, when he opens his mouth (about cricket) he talks sense.
No wonder they love him at the Rose Bowl

County cricketers have seen all sorts of players come and go, not least with overseas players coming and going. Shane Warne’s stints at Hampshire have been something else. He is not just a ‘gun for hire’ for Hampshire, he’s totally committed to their cause.
That’s why he’s not too happy at being called back to Australia for a three day training camp.
And rightfully so. With the new rules about what you can and can’t do on an airplane these days, Warne faces two full days of flying, a three day training camp, and a bad dose of jet-lag, right in the middle of his constant battle to get Hampshire to the county Championship.
Other overseas professionals might be indifferent, but to Warne, this is a deeply irritating thing, and Hampshire know that. It’s part of why he’s so popular down there.

Agree with Kathy - the guy really started to grow on me last summer. He’s going to be missed on the county circuit, not just in Southampton.

A friend of mine is a Hampshire member, and cannot speak highly enough of the contribution made by Warne to the county, in every aspect (not just the most visible efforts made on the field - he rates his encouragement of the juniors and his unselfish sharing of knowledge with the younger players). He, like me, could not care less about his much reported off field indiscretions, whatever they may be. In his words “I don’t care about the cricketing ability of a celebrity slapper, so equally I don’t care about Warne’s off field, non cricketing headlines”.
For my part, I think that Aus may have missed out on having one of the most astute captains at its disposal by overlooking him. I understand why that was so, but a shame nonetheless.
