Was unable to follow the last day, and have just got in now and was surpirsed to see it’s all over - great job England!
Panesar again proves his worth, and it sounds like he’s getting better and better and more and more consistant and comfortable. Also, he keeps getting not out on his batting which has to say something! And certainly his fielding seems to be making the headlines less so that must be improving too. He has a great heart, and is so enthusiastic - he’ll go far!
Great also to see Mahmood picking up some wickets. Still not sure about him and obviously if Jones is back he’ll go in ahead of Mahmood. How did Mahmood look today?
And Read. What can be said! I wasn’t sure whether Jones had been dropped at the right time, but Read certainly made a big impact in this game and if he can continue to pick up runs like he did in this test then his place is going to be secure after his seemingly inpecable glovework. I must say things are taking a positive swing coming to the end of the summer. England are learning from their mistakes and playing a more positive game. I’m sure it helped that these player knew they would be in for the rest of the series at least and not just covering for a short time for one of the many injuries.
Strauss has got to take encouragement again too, and it’s good to see he can still hit centuries as captain!
So, perhaps another new dawn of English cricket?

This was a very good team effort by England. It’s no wonder they had to pick a Pakistani (Younis Khan) as man of the match, because it was a team effort by England that won it.

Today everybody gave something:

Hoggard struggled (and I hear he may be rested during the last test), but he delivered the first breakthrough of the day.

Harmison didn’t get any wickets, but he bowled much better in this innings than the first. He was menacing even as he bowled a fuller length, and his economical early overs put pressure on Pakistan to take some risks.

Mahmoud looked like a good bowler today. He was fast and put the ball consistently in the corridor of, er, the corridor. It made up for his awful batting performance yesterday.

Monty is a star. He bowled economically and got the big names out. His delivery to Younis Khan was not the ball of the century, but it was the ball of the summer. It looked like Khan thought he had more time to get his bat into position for the block, but when he got it there the ball was already past it, and heading for the top of off stump. It’s amazing that just a few weeks ago respectable cricket pundits were saying that they couldn’t take Monty to the Australia. Now it’s clear they can’t go without him.

There was also some excellent fielding, including Read’s solid keeping and two crucial runouts. It was partly running agressively between the wickets which got Pakistan the first innings lead, but today it backfired for them. Collingwood’s direct runout of Yousuf really took the pressure off of England and onto Pakistan.

This team has some flaws, but they’re looking like a team that could give the Aussies some trouble.

Norman Tebbit always has a dreadfully smug grin on his face; and a lifetime of ‘Dean Jones’ moments behind him. My wife thinks Norman the only man who is less appealing than his spitting image puppett !

Anyway, lest I do a Deano myself, it was another superb win yesterday, and Strauss is certainly the man for the job. However has anyone considered that Fred may actually be pretty peeved not to get the captaincy this winter, given that it was almost certain that he’d be offered it ? It’s only natural that he will have thought of himself holding the replica urn aloft.
