Mohammad Yousuf has gone to his century, and Younis Khan isn’t hanging around either. This could be a looong day in the field!

I think someone said (not necessarily on here) “let’s see how Monty does on a wicket that doesn’t suit him”

I think this wicket doesn’t suit him; however he appears to be outbowling his seam up colleagues. I think this proves he is the real deal (or even the full Monty!).

I think the England bowler who looks least suited to this pitch is Harmison. He’s a great bowler when he can bowl short, but this pitch doesn’t suit that. No one would have suggested John Lewis should come in for Harmy after his 11-wicket haul in the last match, but I wonder…

Hopefully Harmy will make me look like an idiot and start cleaning up batsmen.

And finally, Mohammad Yousuf is finally dislodged by Harmy. To bring Inzy to the crease…

In spite of the fact that Yousuf is out I fear he isn’t about to make a monkey out of either of us Alan. Are you still in France btw?

Inzy – marks for artistic impression – 5.9?

113.5 Panesar to Inzamam-ul-Haq, OUT, fell on to his stumps trying to sweep Panesar. We oughtn’t to laugh but the way Inzamam dived over the stumps and nearly managed to hurdle them was quite comical: his belly took off the stumps as he caved right into them. The crowd immediately began to chant “You fell over! You fell over!” Tell you what, they’re right

Aggers reckons he’s got the champagne moment sussed!

It hasn’t really been Inzy’s day, has it?

Well done to Pakistan for breaking even with England – must be quite a boost to have a first innings lead after going for 500+!

Top effort by Pakistan to get a lead.

It’s so hard to psyche yourself up to chase a big total like 515; much harder still when you are 2 for 38. Great great innings, never underestime the Y factor.

Let’s see if England can survive the last ten minutes then…

Pakistan got away from total disaster because of the Y factor… pak has 3 batsmen, 8 walking wickets.. and no bowlers… so it is quite a miracle that they managed a lead of a few runs..
hopefully, pak can survive this match..
asif and akhtar should give pak a good chance of winning in the 4th..

I missed all of today(playing cricket).

    What was Monty’s catch like?

In response to Sean, I am still in France.

In response to Bowman, Monty’s catch was pretty good. He was pretty deep (at fine leg, I believe), and he had to run in and catch it as it was about to hit the ground. It wasn’t a Jonty-esque full-out dive but more of a controlled lean forward and fall, as I recall, but he did well to not lose the ball when his hands hit the ground.

I’m impressed by Panesar, and I was glad to see Mahmoud get some wickets. Unfortunately, Harmison did not make me look like an idiot for saying John Lewis would have been better than him. Harmy showed some adaptability last year when he bowled Michael Clarke with that slow ball, but he’s done a poor job of adapting his tactics in this match. He bowled short too often. His bouncers would probably be more effctive if he used them less frequently on this pitch.

So as Gooch said on TMS today, we essentially have a one innings, 2 day match.

    Bring it on.

We effectively have a draw, Strauss will not give Pakistan a chase why would he.

Well, I’ve had a bit of a look at Chris Read, and much as I was upset at Geraint Jones’s dropping, I like the look of his replacement. He has a good air about him and has an athletic grace about his keeping. He looks better behind the stumps, but whether that means he is the better keeper is another thing. And the batting side of it is still anyone’s guess, since he had a fairly easy trot the first time out, and Jones, in his most recent innings, was often coming in in a pressure situation where he had to be unselfish and bang it about and take risks.

Keeping on the subject of selectorial angst, Warney has written a nice piece about Monty in the Times
    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,426-2298556,00.html
in which he is full of praise, but is also fair about Giles, making it very clear how much of an all-round contribution Giles made to the Ashes win. For example, he thinks if Giles hadn’t been there to hold up one end at the Oval, and score his 57, then Australia could have bowled England out much more cheaply and had a go at the total.

I notice people like Warne aren’t so quick as a lot of English pundits to write off England’s injured players (ie they’ll never play/get selected again). Maybe that’s because Warne’s had a few lives himself — a year long ban, a year off for shoulder surgery, if I remember correctly, with people saying again and again that his career was over. I can’t believe how much things have changed in the England team in the last six months, and who knows what changes there’ll be in the next six.

But if Monty was playing instead of Giles i think we would have the 3rd test at Old Trafford when Ashley was incredibly useless.
