Fair play to Read, and good luck to him. I’ve been with Nasser Hussain on this up until now…he said something like ‘I’m sure the Aussies would rather see Read rather than Jones walking out at Brisbane.’ However the stats, and Read’s attitude, speak for itself.

Can’t wait to see how he performs under the pressure - Geraint Jones is still breathing down his neck. If he takes it on the way Collingwood and Bell do, it could be the start of something spectacular. It would be so disappointing if he walks out again with the body language and temperament of a 13 year old.

Genuinely shocked. I though that Jones would have been given more time by Fletcher, with the argument that his keeping has improved. As a Notts fan I think it’s the right thing to do, but I find it strange that the change has come now with Read having scored nothing in the first class game since his 150 for the A team, rather than at the start of the series.

I think it a shame. I’ve was advocator of GO being dropped when he was Mr. Butterfingers however now he seems to have sorted that out now only to see his batting slump. He’s proven with the bat in the past and I think he’d come good again. However I can’t think we’ll see him again this summer so the man in possesion come the ashes will be Read. Jones is very much ‘the man in possession’ though and it will take something spectacular from Read to dislodge him.

Maybe a decent performance from Read will merely pressure Jones into finding some form with the bat, the only thing he is lacking at the moment.

I haven’t seen Read play, and I’ll be interested to see how it turns out, but I get the feeling that we’ve got two wicketkeepers who are no more than OK with the bat, so I don’t know if this is likely to make much difference. Especially since the consensus is that Geraint’s keeping has improved.

If we had a Gilchrist waiting in the wings I’d be more excited, but at the moment I can’t help feeling that this position is so hotly debated because there is no clear answer. Both will do a job, neither will set the world alight.

Still, this is Read’s opportunity to prove me wrong, so good luck to him.

It does seem a bit harsh on Jones. He has finally got the important part right (i.e. being able to catch) and is now dropped for his form with the bat.
Geraint knows what he has to do, and i’d much rather see him take on the Aussies than Read. Whether he will get the recall so quickly, i don’t know.

No arguments, although I am a tad surprised with the timing. I’ve been a big detractor of Jones, but the display he put on in the Old Trafford test on painkillers and a broken fingertip was excellent. For the first time in two years he seemed like a quality keeper.

Who’d be a selector? Whichever they picked, the other one could quite reasonably feel hard done by. Both will go to Oz, surely - the only clear loser is Foster, who now knows he is #3 stumper.

Pity all three are RHB - we could use a southpaw in the lower middle order…

The selectors should have released Jones to play more for Kent and rack up the runs. His keeping has been more or less faultless recently, so all he needed was time in the middle. I think it’s a mistake, the teams had enough disruption lately and succesful teams are all about consistency of selection and team spirit. Jones is an integral part of the team and well liked and admired by the other players.

I’ve got to agree with japaddy, the pro-Jones sentiments seem very strange given his poor form with the bat recently, his poor wicketkeeping generally (although it has improved) and the fact that Read has done everything the selectors asked of him when they dumped him in the West Indies. Worst thing about this is that Bob Willis is going to be cock-a-hoop - and anything that makes that miserable imbecile smile has, by definition, to be a bad thing.

His campaign against Jones has been almost pathological in its intensity over the past six months or so - almost to the point where if GO had been found dead in a pool of blood, Dibble would have put Willis at the very top of their interview list.

The Aussies would rather face Read than Jones - which makes Jones No. 1 choice in my book.

Incidently, there was a lot of talk at Lords, and also at Old Trafford, that Fletcher is trying to get Garry Pratt on the plane to Australia in some capacity or other (’Specialist 12th Man?!!’) Anyone else heard this one. I wonder how the team are feeling about losing Jones, since he was pretty well liked. Justin Langer said this about England, right after the Ashes last year:

Which is why I back Fletcher’s loyalty to players and am dubious about what strikes me as unnecessary fiddling with the line-up.
