Having voted yes in your poll, because it’s simply a statement of the obvious, I do think it’s important that both MP and AG go to Australia, to give the selectors the opportunity to play Giles if conditions are favourable more to his style. MP might not be quite so devastating on Aussie carpets.
Monty Panesar or Ashley Giles?

It’s time for another poll. After Monty Panesar destroyed Pakistan yesterday, is he now the English spinner in possession? Should Ashley Giles be recalled if and when fit? Place your votes, now!

monty is a 3rd class spiner

That’s a bit unfair Satyendra, Monty is 24 years of age and his first test wicket was Sachin Tendulkar.
Not really third rate is it.

It’s not just unfair, it’s plain wrong.
Mind you, that Warne fella’s overrated too. And don’t get me started on Murali.

Definitely. Monty power.

His bowling average is down into the low 30s - rather better than Gilo, but Ashley still has the edge when it comes to batting.
That said, Monty’s doing a grand job and I think he’ll get even better. He’s done well against two teams used to playing lots of quality spin bowling, so we’ll have to get used to carrying him down the order. On current showing, we’ve got the batting strength to do it.
My concern would be over the pace attack. Harmison and Hoggard are fine, Flintoff needs to be fit, but who else is there to stand in?

Our village team’s last match is in mid September, so I may be available to stand in for Simon Jones if you think it necessary.
Made three runs yesterday, so my batting average is relatively healthy too.
Should I renew my passport ?

This is kind of a pointless poll since Ashley Giles clearly isn’t available and hasn’t been able to prove any kind of form for several months, so by default Monty is the spinner. I think it’s right for Fletcher to refrain from getting overexcited. Cricketers’ fortunes fluctuate wildly. A few weeks ago Monty was being pilloried.

I’m a fan of attacking spin bowling, so I’d love to see Panesar perservered with. Think he has potential to go a lot further than Giles (or any other SLA in cricket right now), but whether he uses it is another issue.
Still, there are two tests left in the series - and the last at the Oval will certainly be on a fairly dryish pitch. A couple more good performances from Panesar, and it might be “Ashley Who?”.

The debate seems to have been around Monty’s batting ability and what Giles brings at number 8. .
Panesar’s selection is clear cut for the following reasons:
1. To win a Test Match you must take 20 wickets, regardless of how many runs are on the board. We can’t afford to leave Monty’s wickets on the bench. We are without one wicket taker - Simon Jones. We can’t lose another.
2. Are we seriously expecting someone who hasn’t turned an arm over for 12 months to be taking on Ponting, Hussey etc? Bowling spin, is different to picking up a bat. You need to be grooved, honed, metronomic, rhythmic. You can’t just turn it on and off.
3. What state is Giles in, mentally as well as physically? Is he up for taking on Australia again after so long out? His temperament is a curious one - usually solid on the field (see The Oval ‘05 and all those grafting 30s seeing Thorpe through for a ton), but not so off it (post Lord’s tantrum, the sleepless nights of last summer etc).
3. Why is no-one questioning the Fletcher sacred cow of five bowlers? 4 bowlers have just beaten Pakistan by an innings.
I say we stick to the new improved winning formula and replace Mahmood with Flintoff at the Gabba.
Top 5 as is +
6. Bell
7. Flintoff
8. G Jones
Hoggard, Harmison and Panesar.
Thanks very much to the King of Spain. Huge respect for what he’s done for us, but ask yourself - who is most likely to make an impact in Australia through Christmas ‘06-’07? Panesar on a roll, or Giles lurching his way back into cricket?

Monty had a short stint playing for Glenelg in the South Australian Grade Cricket Competition last Summer. He’ll certainly be tested if he comes out for the Ashes.

Interesting to see Fletcher’s comments on this. He’s right to say that we need to see Panesar bowl on pitches that are not so favourable as Old Trafford before making premature decisions.
But i don’t agree with his insistence that “we have to produce 11 players who can produce two of the departments efficiently”. I’m sure we can afford the luxury of one attacking bowler who isn’t great at fielding or batting. Monty can be pretty good with the bat (see: six off Murali), and considering even Harmison can make 20, i think we can stretch to having one genuine number 11 in the side. As for his fielding, barring a few glaring mishaps, England seem to do a pretty good job of hiding him in the field. If the guys gonna take wickets, we can afford to let him leak a few runs here and there.

Monty, monty and nothing but the full monty will spin England into Ashes contention along with Harmison bowling with the wind in Perth ! Dull dour Giles has had his day, along with the dull English weather. To tackle the Aussies in sunny Down Under we need the fire of the young Sikh lion, notice how his wicket of Youis in the 2nd match just before lunch really fired up Harmo and the post-lunch session. What an inspirational pair they are , pace’n'bounce with spin’n'bounce the perfect foil for each other, aka McGrath-Warne.. so to win you need to attack, bugger the lack of fielding skills a few net sesssions Down Under will toughen him up, so keep him on his natural roll and the Turbanator will conjur up his magic … go Monty !

All things being equal, I would still have Giles. He has more experience and is a better all round player. However, Giles has been out for a long time and Monty is getting better and better. He is close to becoming number 1, but needs to get a few more games under his belt.
Oh yes, and he might be a terrible fielder but HE CAN BAT.
July 31st, 2006 at 7.33 pm
So Monty’s not good enough with the bat eh? Fletcher say his bowlers are required to have batting or fielding skills too. So which of these two skills does Hoggard have? Is he not in the side as a bowler pure and simple?
July 31st, 2006 at 9.56 pm
Just picking up on Gary’s last point: when will England stop batting Hoggard at 9? He has two shots - stout defence and the (very occasional) cover drive. Whenever he comes in to bat the England run-machine stalls because the runs flow only at one end. No doubt Fletcher and the staff will argue that a defensive number 9 lets the lower order (Collingwood, Flintoff/Bell, and Jones/Read) continue to build on the start they should have by the time Hoggie is in the middle, but given in this series both Harmison and Panesar have shown they know that when there is a man at the other end past 50 and/or approaching 100 the onus on them is to support, AND can play some scoring strokes at the same time, then cut loose when appropriate, isn’t it time to give them their heads and limit Hoggard to his nightwatchman duties, otherwise batting him down the order?

And here I was thinking that Fletcher was only the coach. Apparently not. He has rained on Monty’s parade, which I think was both unfair and unnecessary.
August 9th, 2006 at 10.47 am
Why is he called Monty?
August 9th, 2006 at 6.59 pm
u cant bad mouth panesar he won england this series even at old trafford he got the main three younis yousof n inzy and he had the magic ball in the thrid test to get one of the worlds best out
December 10th, 2006 at 12.34 pm
monty should play because we are getting thrashed and monty could help us win the next test, also monty would give shane warne a run for his money if you know wat i mean.Ashley giles is not helping us but neithers anderson so if monty is coming in take off anderson and if vaughn is comin in an all take off giles if fletcher doesn’t put on monty he is not fit to be manager.
PS.PUT ON MONTY BECAUSE HE IS THE BEST LEFT ARM SPINNER IN THE WORLD
December 14th, 2006 at 8.49 am
Monty Panesar has taken five wickets in the Ashes test match at the WACA today and justified his presence in the England cricket team
December 14th, 2006 at 8.14 pm
Monty, Monty, we all love Monty Panesar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
December 19th, 2006 at 5.20 am
monty proved his point by taking eight wickets in the match. If keeper donot miss clarke’s stumping then we are back in the series and target is somewhere around 350 which we can achieve easily
