    Cricket in Singapore

Not sure where this is (Jim? If you’re still out there) but it’s a cool shot, slap bang in the middle of a massive city.

Don’t want to piss on your chips, and it’s lovely shot, but where’s the creekeet?

Creekeet at this time of year, Nick?

Hell, it’s mid summer here in S’pore. Hot and humid as hell (slightly more now than it is the rest of the year), and I certainly won’t be found down at the ground or East Coast Park playing cricket.

Will, looks like the Singapore cricket club downtown. The unusual looking domed roof at the very right of the pic is the Esplanade Mall, which is right in the heart of the city (in the Suntec City region, if you’ve ever been to S’pore) - so this isn’t too far off.

[PS - let me know if you'd like any other shots of the ground. I'm right now in Singapore for the next 3 weeks, and am staying about 15 mins away from that field]

I am here and that is Singapore Cricket Club, right in the heart of the city. Salil’s called it right!

They’ve just announced that Aus, WI & someone else, probably India, are playing some 1 dayers there later on in the year. I think I’m heading there on Wednesday - but intend to be back to see the umpires walking out at Headingley 5.55pm Hong Kong time, come Friday night.

Actually, India, WI, Pak, SL all have already played ODI games here. I think the ground is called Pedang or something like that, and it has a moderately significant position in clicket lore. In 2 ODIs in 1997(7/8) against Pak, Jayasuriya went berserk scoring the fastest hundred and fastest 50 (in different innings). For a while one of the games held the record for the largest match aggregate in ODIs. Given it’s location in the heart of Singapore as well as the miniatureness of the country itself, it wasn’t particularly suprising that the Singapore Supreme Court building was just outside the leg-side fence but it has to be said that the deliciously symbolism of several of Jayasuriya’s bludgeons delivering errant balls to their punishment right on the steps of the building of justice was hard to miss! Suffice to say that justice was served.
Puns apart, it’s quite a quaint and pretty little ground, almost an anachronism in the womb of the cosmopolis that is Singapore.

the cricket ground’s called the padang. but the cricket teams that are coming to singapore in septemememember (oh so soon!) will be playing at the kallang ground (i think)
the tri-series that comes here in september is WI, Ind and Aus.
i’m rather pleased they’re coming to play here. i also squealed like a muppet when i found out.

Yes, it is the Padang, the home of the Singapore Cricket Club. It hosted the Singer Cup, I think it was, in 1996, when Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan came to play. I distinctly remember the wonderful atmosphere at the Ind Pak game, though I was too young to fully understand what was going on around me or appreciate the game properly - I do know India lost.

There was a series some time later with SA, Pak and NZ, and a standout memory is Waqar Younis breaking a stump with a yorker.

I am absolutely thrilled at the prospect of seeing India Australia play in Singapore - I don’t think the ground is worthy of International status, but its just one more ICC decision I don’t understand. The dates are yet to be released but from the SCA tentatively the matches are 12 14 16 Sep.

    hey all you english people.
    GO BACK TO POMMY LAND

  • charlie bucket wrote:

I’m sure it’s already been pointed somewhere, but pommy actually stems from P.O.M.E which stands for Prisoner Of Mother England. So you’re the Pommy, now grow up and stop name-calling, you cheeky monkey.

Take a look at this for the etymology of pom - http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-pom1.htm - a quick google search reveals both of you are wrong. Also, Ben, SKW doesn’t play the one-day variety anymore, in case you hadn’t noticed.

I’m quite excited at the prospect of run-feasts at Kallang, it is a VERY small ground. It will be the first time a day-night match under lights is played in Singapore.

Something to look forward to then, India Balle Balle!

I am humbled. Still stand by the name-calling thing though, but ta for clearing that up!!!

NOOOOOO why’re they not coming to Singapore? Sigh, what luck. I have a feeling its because Kallang sucks, the ground isn’t big enough and the temporary stands, floodlights etc wouldnt be ready in time or of sufficient standard for an international game.

It seems we’ll have to go to KL to watch the matches now - anybody know what the stadium is like, facilities(floodlights?) etc.? Hope its a proper stadium, at least.

The tri-series in Singapore is Called Off!!!

Just an extract from a letter sent to Singapore CA by Lalit Modi, BCCI!!

“We have now received word from BCCI that the Tri Series will not take place in Singapore this year. Apart from the extremely short timing, the cost of running the same tournament in 2 venues has been prohibitive.

I have received an e-mail from Lalit Modi of BCCI stating:

”We appreciate the effort put in by you and your team. We will definitely schedule future matches in Singapore and we will give you ample of time to prepare for the same. We look forward to working with you and building Singapore as an International venue for Cricket.”

Whilst we may not have the tournament this year, the good news is that there are very positive intentions of playing here next year. Mr Modi has also confirmed this to me on the phone.”

    :((((((((((

Hi Eash, you were part of the organising committee? Yes its quite sad, but there seem to be mixed mesages flying around! See what the beeb has to say - http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/cricket/other_international/australia/5230486.stm

” He said in a statement seven matches will be played in Singapore and the remaining four in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur ”

LIKE WTF! It seems they’re wrong though, how’d they get 11 matches?

Next year you say? Then perhaps SCA should look towards upgrading facilities. Besides the ground, pitch and lack of stands and floodlights, the pavilion is undeserving of the name. I think its rather surprising that there is an absence of a proper cricket stadium in Singapore, especially after all the noises about ‘Sharjah of the East’ etc. I think funding has something to do with it, but surely sponsors or even the government can be roped in..
