Come off it! Vaughan’s finished, everyone knows that.
Everybody knows that, do they? You and a couple of Guardian journalists, maybe.

“You’ve got to remember those guys have been ruled out a long time ago and there is still a few months to go before the series,” Ponting said yesterday.
“It’s a long time to get over any sort of injury. I’m pretty sure they will want Vaughan and Jones here if they can get them here. We are preparing to play a full-strength side.”
Come off it! Vaughan’s finished, everyone knows that. But I don’t know what to make of this. Either he’s stirring, or he genuinely thinks both players could return. He’s desperate, isn’t he, to have the exact same England side which beat them last year. He wants a copybook series but a 4-0 result. He’s hurting, still. Am I reading too much into all this?
And look. Legends, one and all. Tony Greig and Bill Lawry on the right, who we at Cricinfo religiously imitate almost every day without fail

Update: for those preferring proper sentences I’ve written it up on Cricinfo

can’t believe u said that!!
okay! so little Ponting is having nightmares about Vaughany and SiJo.I LOVE IT! poor man i’d be scared too.Vaughan did out-captain him last year, made him look unimaginative and he created friction within the aussie camp . He so afraid of Vaughan.he says he might return,he(ponting) might start drinking again!!!
I think our Ricky doesn’t want it to look like Australia could only beat a second-string England side. Assuming they do beat England, that is.
With all the hoopla as well, I think Ponting’s as anxious as anybody that it should be a good contest — with Australia coming out on top, of course.
I don’t think the English fully understand the hurt the Ashes loss inflicted on Australia, especially when it all came down to one horrible umpiring decision. Australia is mad keen to win and win well; 5-0 will be The Punters goal. It is not enough for Australia to win, they must crush England and destroy the careers of their top players. Australia want Vaughan and Jones to play, so that nobody can say that they only won because their best players were out.
McGrath is back and fully fit and Langer is in full flight. Ponting is the worlds best batsman, and while Warne is a complete failure as a human being he is still the best bowler in the world today if not ever. Players like Gillespie (coming off 201* and a man of the match performance), Jacques and Hodge – who would be starters in any other side in the world – probably will not start for Australia.
Warwick Todd predicts a winless summer for England.
i do not think the aussies will eve crush england ever again. What Vaughan and his boys did last year was destroy their ‘invincible air’ about them.England seem to perform out of their skins when playing the aussies.
I think Ponting is actually just trying to get ahead in the PR media manipulation stakes – if, by any chance (and I so so so hope it happens . . .) Vaughan does recover faster than expected, then that announcement on the eve of the tour would have given England a huge psychological boost. Ponting has effectively taken half of that away by pre-empting the possibility. He probably doesn’t have any more of a clue than the rest of us, and it may not actually make that much difference to him. But the boost England would have gained going into the series with that surprise up their sleeve, would have made a huge difference, I think. Not anymore . . . not a bad strategy, you clever bastard!
