With the benefit of hindsight Wraye, yeh – I still think so . England will only take the next step, which I think is to sustain their success of last year, if they’re willing to stick to the game plan and the tactics that Vaughan instilled in them. Sadly, it may be in his absence but they have to ride out he times when it doesn’t work so well and, to use a golfing term, “trust their swings”. This side still has the “good bones” of a year ago, and I am beginning to think this series against Pakistan will catapult them towards another big Ashes series.

Hmmm….with both sides short of key bowlers this was always going to be a batathon-until-Kaneria-gets-used-to-weather series. But make no mistake – there are going to be thrills on the way, and I expect this to be a closely contested series.

Pakistan’s bowling performance [at least in the first 1.5 hours today] is typical of subcontinental teams at Lord’s. Try too much, get affected by the slope … and England off to a flier. England’ll get near 350 for sure.

d’you really think so, Stu? Three down before lunch is grim stuff. I understand where England have been coming from over the past 2 years, by pushing up the run rate and putting on the pressure. But, they seem to have lost the knack, and now just seem incapable of holding firm. I wouldn’t mind a few hours of boring, old-fashioned Test cricket if it meant the batsmen had dug in to form a strong partnership. Get the runs slower if necessary, no daft shots, but get them runs, boys!

Yeh – I read the commentary on CricInfo that had him named late in the squad and thought he mightn’t be in.

I think – you add back Flintoff and you have a side completely capable of retaining the Ashes – not as many are suggesting, a push over by any means…

Stu: Trescothick is playing. Giles can be a likely tour candidate, although getting into playing XI may be difficult for him, especially since Vaughan isn’t around.

Jones is still making noises about his chances, although I don’t think its likely to happen.

Innocent: Eng win toss and bat…you are successful in giving laughing material

Pak is also missing Yunis Khan…as if the known injury list wasn’t enough, they spring a last minute surprise
