It’s a trifle Will but you always spell ‘definitely’ incorrectly! ![]()

Oh dear, England

Steve Harmison said today
“We need to set out a marker and get back to being focussed and aggressive. We need to walk out there, ten foot tall, thinking: ‘We’re better than Pakistan’”
Focussed, yes. Aggressive? Definately. But taking the assumption England are better than Pakistan? Who the fuck are they trying to kid? England have a useful squad, better than people realise, but they are in no position to be so cocksure of themselves. A worrying statement ahead of the most important series for a long time.

yeah but if they don’t walk tall and think big, they havent got a hope. they should and will show pakistan respect, but they have to have the belief that they are a better team…no winning side has ever won a series thinking they are a worse team.

What Shandy said.
You won’t win if you don’t believe you’re going to. And perhaps Harmison misphrased it. Rather than thinking ‘we’re better than…’ it should be ‘believing that we can be better than…’
Either way, he’s right. Arrogance is sometimes a necessary evil.

I think poor old Harmy’s just trying to bolster his own confidence, without his mates Hoggard, Flintoff, Jones and Harmison to back him up.

er, I meant to say Hoggard, FLintoff, Jones and Giles.

it’s called a positive mindset!

Yeah, we’re too English about this whole sport thing! We need to have the belief that we can beat anyone even if it’s not a dead cert! I’m sure it’s only English people who would have a problem with that phrase. My Australian friend talks up his teams no matter how badly they are doing!

Clearly I’ve been misunderstood. I have no problem with the positive mindset - of course I don’t. But England have little grounds on which to be arrogant and cocky. Over-confidence has a habit of biting you on your arse when you least expect it, that’s all.
