Steve Harmison feels strongly about suggestions that he came out of one-day retirement in order to play the Stanford Twenty20 for 20

    Twenty20 season/carnival upon us

By Will 2 years ago, at the end of June Leave a comment on this post

England’s Twenty20 season began yesterday. Ridiculed by many on its inception a couple of a years ago, it’s fast become a favourite even among the more traditional of supporters. I haven’t yet been to one (definately going asap) but I’m sure I’ll love it. 40 mad overs in the evening sunshine with a couple of beers and a bunch of mates? Not a bad evening’s entertainment if you ask me.

Are you a convert, or is it just a gimmick to you?

    Go Somerset.

I certainly don’t prefer it to test matches, but it’s a bit of light entertainment.

Go Leicestershire, but not last night :(

Converted. It’s not real cricket, as Ben said, there’s nothing as good as a Test, but Twenty20 is a great laugh and entertaining.

I really enjoyed the coverage on Tuesday and Wednesday and was looking forward to last night’s games too, but both of my teenaged kids were home, hungry etc etc.

And there’s the difference. With a Test, most of the time anyway, you can take time off to be with your family and come back to the game. With Twenty20, nip to the shops, chat with kids, cook a meal and boom! You missed it.

Yes, Will, although I’m a traditionalist I’m basically a convert. Whatever the merits (or otherwise) of the cricket I think there’s something rather wonderful about a county ground (cf. Chelmsford this evening) absolutely packed to the rafters with hundreds and hundreds of kids watching from the grass and playing on the outfield at the interval. If only a few of those are hooked - and they will be - the game will continue to survive and prosper in this country.
