  • I think those speed guns are a load of crap. Somehow the white ball goes faster - I bowled 83-84mph in the Test match, and 93mph in the one-dayers. It's crazy. I hadn't bowled a ball for ten days.

Sussex v Gloucestershire: victim of Football World Cup?

By Will 2 years ago, at the end of June Leave a comment on this post

Gloucestershire all out for 98 in 36 overs. In reply, Sussex were 72 for 8 before falling three runs short of the required 99, inside 18 overs! Oh dear. A victim of the Football World Cup, and England’s knock-out match against Ecuador (which is on now)?

I know it’s not quite what this post is about, but is there any chance of a little more County cricket coverage? I’m aware that it’s hardly the most glamourous of topics, but there are some of us (well, at least one) with an interest in, ahem “grass-roots” cricket.

I’ll do my best, but I do find it difficult to get excited (and therefore write about) the county game. My colleage, on the other hand, finds it all much more interesting. So the best thing to do, is head over to Cricinfo where me and colleagues put all the county info.

I’m not against writing about the county game here, don’t get me wrong. I just struggle to find it interesting enough to write about on a blog, especially after doing a round-up for Cricinfo.

I was at the Sussex v Gloucs game at Arundel yesterday and, as a neutral, found the whole thing rather amusing. Not sure that it finished so early because of the football. I didn’t have a good enough view to see how much the pitch was doing, but Sussex mostly got out caught behind, at slip and there was an lbw and bowled, so either the pitch was helpful or the bowling was excellent. OR, perhaps more likely, with it being yet another dead game, there wasn’t enough motivation. There were certainly quite a few second stringers from both sides playing, and perhaps you’d have thought they’d have been motivated enough.
But most amusing of all was seeing Robin Martin-”Tucker”Jenkins taking 3 for 15 from 10 overs and then hitting Sussex’s top score (admittedly only 20) after the Sussex fans I was sitting with had been slagging him off for being useless.

A bit short, maybe, But I thought it was great fun, especially as I got an 18-1 winner at the bookie van.
