Tim - This test started on Friday because of a new ICC rule which says there have to be three clear rest days between back-to-back Tests. ECB say Tests will start on days other than Thursday fairly often in future.

English cricket is finally catching on to simple marketing strategy.

Too many Tests in the past few years have been finishing on Saturday or Sunday, therefore meaning that they sell no beer/pies/sandwiches/merchandise on these days after everyone has gone home. As Saturday and Sunday are traditionally the ones that are most full during a Test, grounds were potentially losing out on a lot of money.

Durham were the first ground in England to start a Test on a Friday (last year against Bangladesh). I was there and could clearly hear the dinosaurs down at Lord’s choking on their gin and tonics at start of play. This despite the fact that starting on a Friday (or any other day) has been going on in other countries for years.

My guess is that before too long English (and Welsh!) Tests will be starting on all sorts of different days, taking into account weekends and bank holidays as well as other important events which may clash with the cricket.
