2006-07 Ashes tickets farce

By Will 4 years ago, at the start of June Add your comment below

Tickets went on sale for Australian Cricket Family members yesterday, and sold an incredible 182,000 in the first eight hours. That’s a heck of a lot, but it’s left thousands of others ticketless and frustrated, as the website and telephone system crashed under the weight of Ashes fever.

Cricinfo has a feast of goodness on the whole affair, including:

Supporters who missed out have described the system as a “fiasco” and a “farce”. “I became part of the Australian Cricket Family, but feel like a stepchild,” Chris Flaherty said. “At age 53, do you think I’m too old to be adopted by a nicer family?” wrote Jillian Mitchell.

“I am absolutely devastated and near tears,” Cindy Gibbins said. “I was on the phone from 9.01am to 3.11pm and am still trying to get through. I want two tickets to the first day of the first Test, which is a tradition for my father and I.”

They’re already appearing on eBay, topping £8,000! Madness.

    Absolute bloody disgrace!
Why did Cricket Australia allocate a ridiculous maximum of 10 tickets per person? They might just as well have hung out a banner saying Ticket Touts Welcome Here.
The online system from Ticketek and Ticketmaster is an absolute joke requiring you to spend endless hours tapping the “refresh” button on your browser until you get a response then buy tickets for one day before going through the whole bleeding process again for tickets for another day.
Most of the people I’ve spoken to here in Sydney are seething.
Why not a postal ballot (to give folk in the bush on dial-up lines a chance) with a maximum of 2 tickets per person?
    A huge own-goal from CA …

This is now the world wide phenomina:

Take a must have event (in this case the Ashes – but three weeks ago it was Radiohead in New York in my case) then take enterprising/lucky souls who see the opportunity to make a buck:

The result is people investing in tickets to re-sell… to the most motivated buyers.

For these “must have” tickets, access based on first come first served rather than the random ballot of interested parties is now a joke.

    CA should have known better…

I’ll be settling down in front of the Ashes in NY, and then going to the World Cup instead.

County cricket is looking better and better. No crowds to contend with, tickets for something like 12 pounds, available at the door, and they even let you on the field between innings.

Although CA has declined to say how its cracking down on scalpers I hear they are considering a number of options including requiring ticket holders to present their ID and the credit card they used to buy them before allowing entry.

Could make for some long queues :)
