Vaughan back with a bang

By Will 2 years ago, at the end of May Leave a comment on this post

At work yesterday, before our internet connection decided to join the rest of the country in enjoying the bank holiday, Getty Images were utterly transfixed by the sight of Michael Vaughan. Not just Getty, in fact, but Sky Sports too; there were 20-minute updates, which would have irritated me had the subject not been so important to English cricket. And it makes a welcome change to hear about a cricket captain’s knee rather than an overpaid jumped-up little twerp’s metasarsal.

Vaughan came through his first match absolutely fine, smashing 67 and even “performing” a run-out. He was understandably cautious though about his summer, and about predicting a possible return date. But it’s very encouraging. My only doubt is that he could easily, easily injure it again; he can’t not run, for example. So…

He ought to play against Shane Warne’s Hampshire on Wednesday which will be fascinating to watch. I’d pop up there if Headingley wasn’t so far away. And there, in one short sentence, I’ve managed to piss off anyone north of Watford. Apologies. I’m not that ignorant really. But it is miles…

It’s only twenty minutes from York, which is only two hours from London - hardly an enormous stretch. The train fares aren’t cheap, though.

It’ll be odd seeing Vaughan playing next to Gillespie; I always felt that in Vaughan’s big century in the Ashes, he basically clubbed Gillespie out of first-string international cricket in one over.

Assuming Vaughan’s back for the first test against Pakistan, who’s going to make way? It would be bizzare to see England take on Pakistan without Bell or Collingwood, who came #1 and #3 in the England averages for the Pakistan tour.

Amusing Pakistan Tour Statistic - #3 in the ODI series England batting averages is one LE Plunkett, who’s top score was 56 - the same as Kevin Pietersen.

It’s not that far, Will - Leeds is about two and a half hours on the train from London.

Then you catch a local train or bus to Headingley. Easy.

I’d join you if I didn’t have to work. The weekend at Edgbaston has left me a little short of cash. Oh dear.

Hearing that Vaughan was back playing again gave me a big thrill too, and I’m on the other side of the world! Though I’m glad I couldn’t actually see it, because I’d be cringing every time he moved his knee, waiting for him to crumble to the ground…
