  • I think those speed guns are a load of crap. Somehow the white ball goes faster - I bowled 83-84mph in the Test match, and 93mph in the one-dayers. It's crazy. I hadn't bowled a ball for ten days.

Steve Waugh in reality show shocker

By Will 2 years ago, at the end of May Leave a comment on this post

Good grief. Steve Waugh gets himself involved in the most bizarre events.

Steve Waugh, one of the most successful captains of Australia will now support Indian cricket by launching a talent hunt to find the next Indian Cricket Superstar.

This concept is slated to be delivered as a Reality Show on Indian Television, a first of its kind in Indian cricket. The show will kick off in November this year, post the ICC Champions Trophy leading up to the ICC Cricket World Cup, 2007 in the West Indies.

This show will offer the opportunity of a lifetime to young cricket players across the nation, from the smallest village to the largest cities in India, a release issued here today stated.

It could only happen in India.

As reality shows go, this one sounds pretty good.

And it’s not such a shocker that they’d choose Waugh or he’d choose to do it. He’s done a lot of charity work in India and is very popular there on that basis, as well as for being a cricketing legend.

It sounds like a great job opportunity for him. If he’s really mean and partisan he’ll try to promote bad cricketers, but I don’t think he will be. And it should be pretty obvious to all the judges who the top candidates are. The hard part will be judging between the best one or two of all-rounders, fast bowlers, spin bowlers and specialist batsmen.

It will be interesting to see what effect this really has on India cricket. They say India’s selection process is highly politicized. Putting candidates for future selection of national TV sounds like something which could even add to the politicization.

I only wish I could see Simon Cowell look at some young player and say “simply dreadful”

    From the Deccan Herald article:

“A battery of ex-international and national cricket celebrities will work in conjunction with Steve Waugh. The panel of judges is likely to comprise of, Gavin Robertson also a former member of the Australian cricket team, and renowned Indian Ex-Cricketers.”

Gavin Robertson! Golly gee! I wonder who the renowned Indian Ex-Cricketers will be? More importantly, will there be *anyone* with high performance coaching experience involved with this program?

Sounds to me like a gimmick dreamt up by the marketing boys over a long lunch. (And, cynic that I am, I wonder if Steve Waugh knows anything about this yet…)
