England v Sri Lanka, 2nd Test, Edgbaston, 3rd day

By Will 2 years ago, at the end of May Leave a comment on this post

After Kevin Pietersen’s howitzer of an innings yesterday, not to mention fine bowling from Monty Panesar and England in the final session, the 3rd day could well be the last day. Sri Lanka have an awful lot to do, but they’ve shown they have immense pride hidden behind a shield of determination. And that, folks, is possibly the most sickening sentence wot I ever wrote, innit.

Goes without saying that I expect another torrent of intelligent discourse to appear here throughout the day; player dissections; why is Flintoff not posting a short-leg?; is Hoggard going to take 300 Test wickets or will the workload kill him?

Not that I’m teaching you to suck eggs or anything.

    In other words, chat away.

As long as we hold on to some more catches we should be ok. Lets not screw it up like last time.Please.

What’s the weather like there? I have to decide whether to shell out 8 euros to watch on the net. It’s not worth it just to watch covers on the pitch.

TMS radio is free, Alan. But unfortunately, it won’t open on my PC this morning. Damn! It’s drizzling and start delyayed.

So the theory of the short leg fielder is that it pressures a batsman to attack, because there’s a risk that a defensive block can be caught if the bounce of the ball is misjudged, right? And when attacking, the batsman is more likely to make a mistake like giving a high catch or getting bowled or stumped.

On the con side it’s an uncomfortable place to field, and moving a fielder there opens a gap somewhere else like 3rd slip or gully.

I’ve only seen them used effectively with spinners. When the ball’s moving fast you want to be far enough back to have some reaction time.

Has anyone seen a short leg take a catch off of fast bowling?

I think the TMS link might be fixed now, Wraye. I had a problem with it last night, but then I went to the TMS page and clicked on the FiveLive Sports link, which worked. I just tried the link from the BBC Sport cricket page (here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/england/5022914.stm ), and it worked.

Thanks Alan, did a PC restart and all is well, except for Blowers talking about eye-candy. The mind bloggles. One shudders.

There must be a short leg catch somewhere in Wisden. Saw one just 2 weeks ago when my Bonn CS team played Mülheim CC. We notched up 316 for 8 off 50 overs, and then set up a vicious ring cordon to bowl/catch them out for 48 off 14 overs exactly.

It’s no fun listening to a loop of Jonathan Agnew saying we’ve had a wet day. I’m glad I didn’t pay 8 euros for the video.

In defense of Blowers, I think it was some woman’s letter that started the eye candy discusion. Yesterday he had an interesting discussion about cricket clubs in Europe - places like Prague, Bretagne, Bordeaux, and Iceland. He also mentioned a match in Berlin between some English and German lawyers, at a field very close to where the World Cup soccer final will be. I thought that might interest you, Wraye. BTW, are you going to get flooded with soccer hooligans in your area?

And what brought up poor Monty as an issue here? Surely he didn’t make any fielding errors today - there hasn’t been any play.

No joke, Alan, I helped set up the german solicitors game but was not free to score for them. Their captain, Sven, mailed the results to just about everybody who has anything to do with cricket in Germany, including the tea ladies.

Ah shucks, don’t mention the football. It is already unbearable here.

BTW Ty, okay Monty’s fielding is a wee bit off, but the lad is not a joke, he can bowl! KP dropped a few last year and was not called a joke. Leave the lad alone. His dedication to England is obviously 100%. I want to mother him.

Monty rocks, leave him alone! He can learn to be a good fielder, and his bowling is really excellent. And this comes from the King of Spain’s biggest fan, so ner.

It looks like we might actually get to see some play today, though not very much admittedly. Ty, Monty’s our only spinner. He’s quite important, don’t you think? Even if his fielding isn’t quite up to scratch. Then again, after the performance at Lord’s you could say that for most of the team.

Have they actually set a time yet, Sophie? The last I heard they were going to do pitch inspections every half-hour. That gives it enough time to start raining again in the meantime, natch.

As far as I know there’s no set time yet, except that its unlikely to be before tea.

Hello all - astounded to see there is play, having driven through loads of rain today.

Listened to most of the debate about Monty today and reckon…… give him time. I think that if GiLo is fit for the ashes, Monty won’t get a look in; not because he’s not a better bowler but because of his batting/fielding.

In 3 years’ time I reckon GiLo will have retired and Monty will have improved his fielding (if not his batting) enough to justify his place in the side.

As for today’s play - England need a wicket.

    finally got a wicket!
Took flippin’ long enough. Wow we like to make it difficult for ourselves.

Sri Lanka seem to like to put up a fight just when everyone thinks they are down and out. And what happened to England yesterday, losing 5 wickets for 5 runs??? Just like the old days of batting collapses - I had hoped we were over that sort of thing.
