Isn’t Craig White retiring at the end of this season? I’m starting to think it’s more likely we’ll see Vaughan leading Yorkshire out onto the field next year rather than England.

Vaughan’s injury fears and all that

Having thought about it, I don’t think Michael Vaughan is necessarily as screwed as some people think he is. He did say during the winter that he wouldn’t return until he was absolutely 100% fit. And while his injury is clearly taking longer than he’d like, I’m more and more convinced that he’s simply biding his time for the Ashes. Sri Lanka - yes, England need to beat them. Pakistan, too. But Vaughan, hopefully, will travel to Australia to retain the Ashes in November - and that hasn’t happened for a Very Long Time.
Of course, I could be wrong and he could retire tomorrow. But that’s what I reckons…

“And while his injury is clearly taking longer than he’d like, I’m more and more convinced that he’s simply biding his time for the Ashes.” - If this, what you say Will, is true, then nothing can be much worse for English cricket than this kind of outlook.
First you ignored ODIs and said tests are the main thing, and now within that also you say Ashes are the main thing. Well, thats fine as long as you don’t *ever* worry about any other matters cricketing.
Otherwise, consider this scenario - England scrape through SL (or heavens forbid, draw or lose) and definitely, with this attitude lose to Pakistan. Then, come Ashes and you have a few personnel injured etc and unable to retain it.
Then, where is English cricket? Or English Test cricket, to be more specific? You’ve lost to weaker opponents, and you’ve not been able to fulfill your other main gole of retaining the Ashes? And, ofcourse, who knows where this would lead to by the time of next Ashes in terms of spectator interest, ECB revenues, the whole focus on the game etc.
I think this is a very very flawed attitude. England should look to win all their test matches with the best resources. Sure a physically injured player should not be rushed back…but he shouldn’t be ’saved’ for Ashes either.

I very much hope you’re right, Will — that he’s just taking the time to make sure he’s 100 percent right. I do detect the anxiety levels about him rising in England. The team need him back — if Freddie’s the heart of the beast, then Vaughan is the brain.
I don’t have a problem with the Ashes focus myself — it’s the premier contest in test cricket, however you run it. It would be nice to have everyone fit for these earlier series, but if they’re not, they’re not, and the focus has to shift to the big thing looming in November.
