England v Sri Lanka, 1st Test, Lord’s, 1st day

Live chat of the first Test between England and Sri Lanka

So, the first Test of the summer gets underway this morning. Half of England’s first-choice XI are either covered in bandages or hobbling on crutches; chances are they’ll have their feet up and will be watching on TV. That’s if they subscribe to Sky, of course…

This is the first summer that the first Test hasn’t been available on terrestrial TV which, being a non-Sky subscriber, I’m peeved at. I don’t doubt Sky will do a great job, but it’s back to TMS for me on my days off. Or the pub.

Chat away!

UPDATE 10.36 England win toss and bat. Sajid Mahmood (debut) and Monty Panesar to play. Ian Bell and Jon Lewis miss out.

Morning all. I won’t be around at all today, not til the evening, so by the time I get back I want a full list of comments to give a detailed run of the day’s play.

Okay, it’s not the Ashes, but it’s the first Test of the summer…

Yippee, the Test matches are back, and as usual I had my customary dream predicting what the score will be. Last night I dreamt that Alastair Cook was out for 313, and when he was out Tres was still in. Wishful thinking or blind confidence? I think I need to have a chat with my inner self.

Don’t you mean Mahmood in, Lewis out?

How nice to be able to listen to cricket at a sensible time of day!

Hey, someone (I’m assuming it was Boycs) just mentioned the “corridor of uncertainty” on the live feed! I don’t think he meant us though . . .

Isn’t it great to have the commentary over the internet at last. Makes a pleasant change from refreshing the scorecard page every minute or two over the English winter. My husband thought I was mad . . . maybe he’s got a point . . .

You know it’s summer when there’s Blowers on the radio! Ahh, bliss

I’m sitting in Melbourne listening to Blowers and desperately wishing I was back home. He’s just seen his first bird of the morning, a pigeon. Only Blowers can find delight in this. I seem to remember everyone else in London hates the damn things.

Aah, the first day of test match cricket in England. What am I doing in Australia!!

Darnation. Strauss out with the last ball before lunch.

Did someone just say something on tms about vaughan being injured again this morning?

Yeah, I heard that too. The only confirmation I could find so far was this

Cool - thanks for that. I guess TMS can get the news out quicker than the web.

    England 276-2.

Can it be only a year ago that we thought we needed Graham Thorpe in order to have a chance against the Aussies? Now even TMS think we’re only missing Vaughan for his captaincy and nobody misses Bell - for years the great white hope.

Vass isn’t the bowler he was - Murali had better be in a class of his own, the rest of them you wouldn’t bet to keep a county side in Division One…

For Vass, read Vaas, of course. New ball taken.

Lovely innings by Cook, and even KP isn’t being his usual airheadly self. (She says, possibly inviting the Commentator’s Kiss of Death).

Comedy moment where Maharoof (I think) gave up on what he thought was a boundary, only to have it stop short and let the batsmen run four. Classic.

Is it just me, or did Blowers just call Mahela Jayawardene “Michelle”?

Pietersen caught off a no-ball, Cook caught behind for 89.

And so… ‘Oggy ‘Oggy ‘Oggy Oi Oi Oi :)

Pietersen’s innings could be classed as evidence for a deity - someone certainly smiles down on him

How come Pieterson get’s all the luck! I don’t understand!

  • Jess wrote:

(I meant all of KP’s innings, btw, not just this one)

Christopher - you were almost right. Alastair Cook wasn’t out for 312, but on 312

Hmm - England should be happy! Cook will be dissapointed but shouldn’t be. KP proves that luck is in the genes, just as well Bell proves that it’s not in his (although obviously not today!). Looking forward to some bowling from England by the end of tomorrow!

Hi all. Just got back to see the highlights. Trescothick looked in control until his edge to first slip. Cook, again, looked very good; he seems to use his height against the spinners to good effect, and is pretty nimble too. Looks pretty bloody good to me - enjoyed the back-foot leg-side flick for four! Some batsmen will play for a decade and will never manage that shot (then again I’m a bit of a back-foot leg-side fan, me). In fact, he’s as good a young batsman I’ve seen for a while. Sir Geoff likes him too. “Shot, boy.”

Pietersen, well…again, only seen highlights, but he looked absolutely imperious. He’s so frigging tall and, despite his crouched stance, he morphs and extends his body - uncrouching, if you like - when he plays his shots, and looks like a giant. He is a giant. Oh dear, ha, see what you mean about the no-ball! Nice catch, wanky shot. Fortune favours…well, you know.

First time in years that I’ve missed the opening day of a Test, let alone the opening day of the summer. Looked like a nice, solid one for England

Five’s highlights were absolutely superb; no-one does cricket as well as Sunset + Vine. I missed Benaud and Athers, though.

Comments on the day’s play? Great to see Tresco so obviously enjoying himself, first of all. Alistair Cook is terrifyingly good, and I can only imagine experiences the world slowed down, Matrix style; he seems able to just wait until the ball has almost passed him, before clipping it perfectly to the boundary. One of his off-side cuts was absolutely outrageous.

I can see us declaring on 530 odd after a 27-ball 50 from Geraint Jones.

As for leaving Bell out, my views are mixed. Cook’s clearly got the better head for the game, but he’s yet another slip catcher in side that already has Flintoff, Tresco and Strauss.

Bell, on the other hand, is one of the best close catchers in the game, and has taken loads of important catches, even when he’s been inept with the bat.

Catches win matches. But then so do assured knocks of 89 or so.
