South Africa v Australia, 3rd Test, Johannesburg, 3rd day

By Will 2 years ago, at the start of April Leave a comment on this post

This game’s hotting up. Mike Hussey did one of his rescue acts yesterday, but fell in the 70s and Australia still trail by about fifty runs. Iiiiiiinnnnnteresting. I’m on the Verdict at CI, so let’s hope for an interesting day’s play. And I’ve slagged South Africa off twice in succession, so I better a) start praising Australia b) start praising South Africa or c) talk about sausage rolls. Crack on, chat away, etcetera

What the hell is going on here?

Kasprowicz, then Symonds, now Ponting!!! all bowling before Warne.

Has John the Bookmaker been in touch with Ricky Ponting at all during this match? This is a joke.

As if South Africa aren’t out-batting us in this match as it is, without making it nice and easy for them to build a lead!

Remarkable wasn’t it. Surprising, too, that Ponting was bowling 120kph, pace which Symonds could only dream of!

This could (should) be Symonds last Test. Did you know that early in his career, he had to decide between England (where at the time he would’ve been a walk up start) and Australia. Ironically, he wouldn’t be getting a game for you guys at the moment aye?!? (Flintoff, Pietersen and all…)

Yeah, I remember him playing for Gloucestershire. Absurd talent, and I was so hacked off when he left - it epitomised the state the English game was in back in the 1990s. Everyone wanted to be Australian. Even me!

So, when Watson is fit (and I’m not sure if he is or not) will Gilchrist move up to six to accommodate Watson at 7?

I thought he was well on the way to a permanent test spot before he did his shoulder.

I reckon. He hit a double hundred in the Pura Cup final the other day, which was his first “four-day” innings for seven or eight weeks. He’d been playing one-dayers endlessly. I rate him, think he’s a decent batsman and a much better bowler than Symonds. Which isn’t hard

I think I heard vaguely about that QLD scored 900-6 or something and the for six part was a collapse apparently. I wasn’t sure if he was playing as a batsman only. Perhaps he might bat at 6 and not 7 then.

Before I had to give up Sky Sports I watched a bit of Watson at Brisbane v Windies (I think) and remember thinking he was bowling high eighties (my kph conversions are pants) and thinking that wasn’t.

Next Christmas here is the siad I suggest |England will want to play least.

    Langer
    Hayden
    Ponting
    Hodge
    Hussey
    Gilchrist
    Watson
    Lee
    Warne
    McGrath
    MacGill

Luckily Hohns has fallen on his dill (sorry) and dropped Hodge. I fear he won’t be out for long.

If you’re coming to Canterbury on the 10th remind me to mention Symonds and why he left Kent. It isn’t something I want to commit to print :)

Ha, righto. Tell me, it’s not April 10th is it? Coz that’s looking seriously doubtful now.

Good - have taken the day off work also

Anyone watching this tell me if Warnie’s got the googly back - cricinfo commentary seems to suggest that.

Oh certainly, Sean. Turning it wildly today, but he lacked his usual control I felt. Almost as though he got a bit excited at its re-emergence

Hodge must not get back into the side - and that’s coming from a Victorian. He offers nothing the losing side didn’t have last year, in fact more of the same. He plays from the crease too much and Harmisson, Hoggard and co will take him apart. Bring back Matthew Clarke, bring back Watson (at 6) and maybe even Jaques.

    Hayden
    Langer
    Ponting
    Hussey
    Clarke (M)
    Watson
    Gilchrist
    Lee
    Warne
    Clarke (S)
    McGrath

    Others from (MacGill, Tait, Jaques)

That would be Michael (Clarke) - not sure where Matthew came from….
