South Africa v Australia, 5th ODI, Johannesburg

What in the name of all that is sane is going on at Johannesburg? Adam Gilchrist started it with one of his violent furies; now Ponting’s gone utterly beserk and is smashing the Boks to kingdom come! This, after Australia levelled the series on Friday. What a game. Australia are heading towards the first 400 in a one-dayer at this rate.
Oh and Symonds hasn’t even arrived yet. (Click here to see Cricinfo’s new spangly scorecard)

Good one Will. They’re going to be writing about this one for a long time to come.
And as I type, it just keeps getting better!Where are you Scott?
March 12th, 2006 at 11.26 am

March 12th, 2006 at 11.32 am

400 UP!
NO BALLs
March 12th, 2006 at 11.40 am
What a schamozzle!
15 from this over so far – no legal balls bowled yet.
March 12th, 2006 at 11.43 am
And a WICKET! What an over!
Ponting as well!

This is the most I’ve ever enjoyed a one dayer! Put this alongside Australia’s first ever win against the West Indies at the MCG – about 1989ish, the World Cup win(s) and the Natwest Final last year. All the SA talk in the press makes it all the better.
March 12th, 2006 at 11.51 am
Great call with the 420 Elliot. I thought you were stretching it abit, but they’re there, with an over to go!
March 12th, 2006 at 11.52 am
i have never ever witnessed a better innings from anyone in either forms of the game (i don’t want to get into trouble for comparing but thats just awesome) well done to the best batsman in the world.
March 12th, 2006 at 11.56 am
4 for 434 – just a lazy 8 or 9 an over for the Springboks.
March 12th, 2006 at 12.00 pm
Thanks Stu! 420 was on the cards at about 370 from 45 overs.
March 12th, 2006 at 12.06 pm
Jeeesus….what a performance! That’s the way to do it. SA should have wrapped it up at the last ODI, they could have done it easily. Now they’re pretty much screwed. Wow…amazing.
March 12th, 2006 at 12.06 pm
I have been feeling very poorly lately, very listless and inert, like a South African fast bowler.
I feel better now! Prolly back on deck next week.
March 12th, 2006 at 12.09 pm
Nothing like a good Springbok massacre to pep you up ay Scott?!
March 12th, 2006 at 12.15 pm
Anyone know of any online radio coverage of the match? I’m suffering badly not being able to listen in.
March 12th, 2006 at 12.20 pm
Yeah, something like that! Wonder what Smith’s next verbal gambit will be.
March 12th, 2006 at 12.21 pm
How about I think they choked at about the 420 mark…
March 12th, 2006 at 12.25 pm
I must dig out that “we’re no chokers against the Aussies” quote Smith said recently. What a honker
March 12th, 2006 at 12.27 pm
is there any radio coverage – I’m dying to listen – I can’t find anyone covering it…
March 12th, 2006 at 12.28 pm
SA need to make 178 to avoid the biggest ever losing margin. They’re 1 for 3 (3 for 1 everywhere other than Australia).
March 12th, 2006 at 12.28 pm
Ah, here it is
“I thought they were the team that were choking, if that’s the word, at the back end (of the match),” said Smith.
“He said that, did he?”, said Ponting. “It’ll give us ammunition for Sunday.”
March 12th, 2006 at 12.30 pm
lol Will – it’s great stuff. Makes the score today pretty sweet…
March 12th, 2006 at 1.53 pm
Don’t get too cocky, you Aussie supporters. The Saffers are on track, they might do betetr than you think…
March 12th, 2006 at 2.21 pm
Indeed- 242 for 2 after 26 and Gibbs is matching everything Ponting did. They are on track to win it!

I can’t believe I didn’t get tickets to this game…I just realsied that if SA do win (if being the operative word)the records for highest and second highest ODI scores will come from the same match.
March 12th, 2006 at 2.50 pm
my boyfriend at home in the UK just woke me from a nap to scream the score down the phone to me. I can’t get in to cricinfo. What’s going on?
March 12th, 2006 at 2.57 pm
Does ANYBODY know where to get a live feed for the match on the net???? PLZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!
March 12th, 2006 at 4.53 pm
That was, without a doubt, the best and most tense ODI I’ve ever watched.
My respect to both teams. In particular the consistantly brilliant Ponting, and the madness that is Herchelle Gibbs.
What a great match. I need a beer.
March 12th, 2006 at 8.37 pm
Heh. I’m loving reading all the Aussie fans’ comments on here! Cheers guys, makes for lovely entertainment
Thanks! Way to go Proteas!
March 13th, 2006 at 2.40 am
Zak, I agree. After 24 posts in an hour (11:23-12:30), they were strangely silent after that! Hilarious!
March 13th, 2006 at 8.00 am
Fantastic, I love these comments, was at the game yesterday & true to form the Aussies thought they had it wrapped up, who could’ve blamed them? I can’t even explain the feeling of winning the game. Maybe Warney wishes he could take his comments back that he made in the Australian (newspaper) when he was interviewed in SA before the game…we have the last laugh, and boy am I loving it!!!!
March 13th, 2006 at 11.14 am
well done South Africa. Great win.
from all of us South Africans in the UK.
March 13th, 2006 at 11.07 pm
Great win SA. How can anyone deny that? BTW Steve, the silence from the Aussies could be explained by the fact it was 3.00AM in the morning over here!
An awesome win and there’s nothing you can say (or want to say to take anything away from it – nobody is trying to) but I doubt Graeme Smith would agree that it is the “last” laugh. It’s a nice little interlude for SA after the horror time they’ve had lately, and sets up the rest of the Test series nicely, just like the incredible ODIs in England did last year.
Should I remind you, SA are still 2 nil down in the Tests? Maybe SMith was heeding Warney’s advice and not saying anything too foolish, too early – about time.
